1 Issue Resurrection: He is Risen, Indeed! Easter Sunday was in the middle of the school holidays. To many it means the Easter bunny and a day of food and celebration. For some it means obligatory church attendance, after which life goes on as usual. How sad that we have so quickly forgotten the true meaning of Easter. Our God reigns! Jesus Christ died, yes. But even more importantly, He rose again and is now seated at the right hand of God the Father, as we say in the Lord's Prayer. Jesus Christ literally defied death. But He did more than just a Houdini move. We "ooo" and "ahhh" over the narrow escapes by magicians like David Copperfield and others, but eventually even those daredevils will face death. Their power is limited. But Jesus Christ was greater -- He defied death FOREVER. Jesus Christ lives and reigns for eternity, whether you or I believe that fact or not. And He has reclaimed life for all those who believe in Him. This is the second miracle of Easter. Through God's work on the cross, we have access to eternal life as well. Read these classic Bible verses: Romans 1:16-17 Romans 10:9-10 Matt. 10:32-33 Please consider today the wonder of God's power and His love for you. He knows you. He knows what you have done. He knows what you are going to do. But He is waiting for your response, my friend. God doesn't need your praise or your service to Him; He desires it. It is not what we do for God that gets us into heaven and gives us a right relationship with God. It is only by faith in Jesus Christ. More classic Bible verses to read: Galatians 2:16 Ephesians 2:8-9 Prayer: Thank you, Jesus for being my Saviour. Amen. Mr. Seidel Dear Parents, Prayer suggestions: Welcome back to an exciting Term 2. I pray you had a blessed Easter and your children a refreshing holiday. The School Captains represented St. Michael s at the Hahndorf ANZAC service which was well attended by school families. Our newsletter is full of information,so be sure mark key events in your calendar. Cheers and God bless, Steven Seidel We thank God for the safe return of all of our school members after the extended holidays. We ask for God s continued blessings on our school as we move forward into a new term. Please pray for the following families: Flynn, Gallagher, Filipowicz, Foster, Gallasch & Grear
2 Staffing News Please keep Anne Jones, our Business Manager, and her husband Rex, in your prayers as she has been in intensive care at Flinders Hospital since the 6 th April and has only recently been moved to a high care ward. Anne was diagnosed with pneumonia and a severe sinus infection with further tests being conducted for her treatment. It is unknown when Anne will return to work at this stage. During her absence Tracy Downing will be covering her duties. Please pray for Gods healing hand upon Anne. Canteen News Don t forget that the canteen will not be operating this week however if we have enough volunteers, it will resume as per usual in week 2. Mr Seidel Mother s Day Celebration Service One of the important days of the year is Mother s Day; a day on which we can celebrate the kindness, love and generosity of our mothers. As a school we celebrate this special day next Friday (9 th ) with a chapel service run by our Year 3 classes. All mothers are invited to this and then to stay on for a cuppa and morning tea in Bukatila. I certainly hope you can attend and share this time with your children. Mr. Seidel ANZAC Day School Captains James Kemp and Lucy Fielke along with Mr Seidel represented St. Michaels and attended the ANZAC Day memorial service in Hahndorf. The School Captains laid a wreath.

Please let Robyn Naughton or me know which session you would like to attend. The results of the survey will be presented and the will be opportunities for discussion. Mr John Dow Deputy Principal/PYP Coordinator Weekly Chapel Services Last term chapel was trialled at 2pm on Friday afternoons. After a trial period and a staff review it has been decided to return to the morning time of 9am. All parents are welcome to attend. Library Borrwoing Students will be able to return/borrow library books either tomorrow or Friday this week. Please be advised however that overdue notices will be sent home next week. Mon: Canteen Helpers 2014 Term 2 Week 2 Yr 5 5 th May HELPER REQUIRED Wed: 7 th May HELPERS REQUIRED Fri: Mon: Wed: Fri: 9 th May Tanya Griffin & HELPER REQUIRED Term 2 Week 3 Yr 6 12 th May HELPERS REQUIRED 14 th May HELPERS REQUIRED 16 th May HELPERS REQUIRED Please call Mel on if you can help out Curriculum Matters Recently in The Advertiser, it was reported that researchers from the University of South Australia had discovered the secret to making our kids behave (The Advertiser, Tuesday 22 nd April, 2014). The article said that, engagement of kids in the classroom is a more effective way to fix bad behaviour than treating directly as an issue. While there are some children who suffer from a lack of boundaries, the majority of children will respond to an engaging curriculum. Through the units of inquiry, we aim to provide a curriculum that is engaging; one that is of interest to the students, and involving them actively in their own learning. The energy and enthusiasm of the teacher, opportunities for students to work collaboratively, and sharing stories are just a few ways to make the curriculum more engaging. We also believe it should be relevant; linked to the students prior knowledge and experience, with explicit connections to the current circumstances and lives of the students. This is not always easy to achieve. I have heard people lament all the time they spent learning long-division, to never use it again. Sometimes there are concerns that student behaviour is linked to lack of challenge. Ideally, the level of challenge needs to be within the not too easy, not to hard range, also known as the zone of proximal development. The curriculum needs to move the students on in their knowledge and understanding, extending the experience of the students to increase their competencies and understanding. And lastly, it should be significant, in that it is worth knowing and spending precious learning time on. The school s programme of inquiry is organised under the six transdisciplinary themes that have global significance and offer students the opportunity to explore issues of importance to all human societies. Mr John Dow PYP Co-Ordinator/Deputy Principal
4 From the Community Carer Tegan Howard Can you help? CareNet is a volunteer service made up of school families of St Michaels to assist each other in times of need and/or crisis. We have a supply of meals kept in the freezer at school that we are able to give out to families when in need. It s simple to be involved. All we ask is that you make a meal for us to keep in our freezer, or add something extra to your shopping trolley one week. Here are some suggestions of what you could make/buy: Meals: lasagne, casseroles, curried sausages, pasta or vegetable bake, curries, soup, quiche, pies or anything else that freezes well. Things for lunchboxes: muffins, biscuits, ham & cheese rolls, slices, mini quiches. There are foil trays available at the front office if you want to pick one up to freeze a meal. If you choose to use a foil tray you already have at home, please label it with the meal, ingredients and the date made. He regularly presents at conferences throughout Australasia and is a recipient of an Australian National Excellence in Teaching Award. Mark s books will be available at the seminar for purchase, using cash or credit card. To hear about RAISING BEAUT KIDS, listen to the radio interview with Debra Tribe on ABC RAISING BEAUT KIDS, co-written with Bill Hansberry, is beautifully presented in a cookbook style. Each chapter offers a typical tricky scenario that parents often face at home with their children and teens - accompanied with the ingredients that fire things up! Then a set of Recipe rescues are offered as a problem solver: a practical way to respond to kids when they serve up tricky behaviours. The Recipe rescues are designed to help parents steer the behaviour of their kids (and their own behaviour) in more positive directions, within the context of building healthy relationships.
