1 March 2014 St Peter s Parish Church Kirk Onchan To be central to the life of Onchan Providing a Christian Witness Worship and Welcome to all

2 It s time to change indeed Do some people in our churches not change simply because we don t expect them to? They came in from the cold ; they got their get out of hell free card ; they were marked with that heavenly bar-code - so what more can we really expect of them? They attend, they tithe, they sing and, of course, they avoid certain scandalous behaviour that may bring that heavenly bar-code into question. But since we did not expect any ongoing transformation they live at the low levels of change that we suggest by our silence. In Galatians 4:19 Paul seems to be waiting on tenterhooks for the expected change of his readers. Some may even call this sort of language very high expectations indeed: My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you He seems to be suggesting that morphing into ever greater degrees of Christlikeness is normal. It seems to be an expectation of all of God s people and any delay or stalling of the process should become the real shock in our churches. Do you remember those Power Rangers so much a part of children s TV in the 1990s? They popularised the famous shout, It s morphin time. That well known call meant that they received unusual power to change and do extraordinary things. Now imagine a church liturgy that began with the call, It s time to change to which the congregation responds with an enthusiastic It s time to change indeed. Now before you roll your eyes and join the call to move churches allow this curious liturgy to play with your imaginations for a while. When Jesus told us that the Kingdom of God has arrived he was not talking about a distant event that happens after death. He meant now and he meant his people to be the signposts to that new reality through their changed lives. In Matthew 21:43 Jesus says, Therefore I tell you that the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit And what are those fruit of the Spirit? Love, joy, peace the sort of fruit that should be expected in growing measures from people living in his Kingdom or under his reign. If you like, we are becoming free samples of Jesus to a world in rebellion against him. So why do we settle for less? Perhaps it s because we hear that the church in the UK is shrinking and so we panic and assume that all of church life should be about getting more bums on seats. And instead of raising the bar of our expectations of transformed lives living under the power of the Kingdom of God (a very powerful evangelistic tool in itself) we have lowered it and settled for the minimum requirements for getting out of hell. But the call of the gospel was never meant to be just a means of escape; it

3 is a call to join the mission of God. And God s mission into this world is a transformative mission that needs people who are starting to look and sound more like the Jesus they proclaim. Its time to change indeed - all day and every day. Blessings, Clive Sat 1 March: 10 12noon. Spring Coffee Morning at 15 Lucerne Court Fri 7 March: 2pm at St Peter s Church. The Lonan bell ringers need more members. The second February meeting, a talk about the work of the Manx Blind Welfare, has yet to take place. Hazel Johnson

8 MAKE & BAKE Having completed a year of making, baking and selling in aid of much needed church funds August saw the commencement of what is hoped will be another good year of producing more craft and home produce items. Knitting needles are busy, sewing machines buzzing, wood and glass products are in the making. Kim has now joined us adding to the selection of beaded items necklaces and bracelets ideal gifts for the younger generation. Cake and preserve makers have excelled themselves since Make and Bake started. Their items are always eagerly sought and bought. At the time of writing this there have been four sales tables held since the start of the new sales year August, October, November and January. Over that period the total of sales amounts to Hopefully, with your help, we are well on target for another successful sales year. We are forever on the search for new craft idea so if you can help in any way, please get in touch with me for more details. 14 I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But,... thank God, I still have my driver's license! 17 POETRY CORNER The storm force of the sea hurtling ashore towards you and me, The Majestic, Powerful height encapsulating all our delight, until that moment when fear strikes Into our being - What desperation it brings fear in the breast now sings, this earth that we have usurped Trying to fit nature- do we deserve any rational relief - NO the truth between nature and ourselves to find it - what depths must we plumb before all nature we succumb

18 TUESDAY HOME GROUP 3 We continue to enjoy our 101 Bible studies. The apostle Paul took so long to discuss that we had to give him a second week. Last week was the turn of Judas. He really gave us food for thought and we ended the evening looking at Judas in a whole new light. This week it is the turn of Barnabas followed by Mary Mother of Christ. Joan Cory St Peters Mums and Tots The Mums and Tots group have averaged around 20 children each week. Several children have been ill. We had twins return on Friday and they earned a round of applause and a big cheer for taking all of their HORRIBLE medicine! Once again many thanks go to Claire Butler for providing the cakes for the Call in 4 Coffee on Wednesday 11th February. As usual her cakes were beautifully made especially for Valentine s Day. She even provided heart confetti to decorate the table, which made it look very nice. Remember we are in the hall every Friday during term time and you are welcome to pop in for a cup of tea if you are in the village and have the chance to meet our members. Jill Dugdale Onchan Horticultural Society Due to the horrendous weather, our last meeting on the 12 th February had to be cancelled at the last minute, but as it was supposed to be our AGM, we have decided to hold a short version, at the next meeting on Wed 12 th March. This will be followed by a talk by Desmond Robinson A Guided tour of the Calf of Man. Members & visitors are invited to join what will be a very interesting night. Margaret & Howard Corlett York Course for lent -build on the rock BUILD ON THE ROCK (Matt. 7.24) starts by looking at faith and doubt. Is it wrong or is it normal and healthy for a Christian to have doubts? Is there any evidence for a God who loves us? We hear from many witnesses. At the heart of a Christian answer stands Jesus himself. We consider his strange and beautiful story and reflect upon his teaching, his death, his resurrection and his continuing significance. Five sessions: 1. Believing and doubting 2 Jesus - our teacher 3 Jesus - our saviour 4 Jesus - conqueror of death 5 Jesus - Lord and brother Our ecumenical lent courses will be on St Anthony s Church.

19 We all celebrated as Rev Clive Burgess was inducted as Rector of St Peter s Church by Bishop Robert Paterson on January 26th.
