1 The Messenger September 2015 Capital Improvement Projects The Trustees have identified the following priorities that need to be cared for. Please consider a special gift to the Capital Fund above & beyond your regular giving. 1) One AC unit for the Poc. sanctuary needs replaced. $3,500. 2) Windows in the Poc. Fellowship Hall need replaced. $1,100 / unit, $15,000 total 3) Plover entryway, sanctuary and outside windows need painting. They are working on getting a bid for this work. The Finance Ministry Team Ingathering Kits Kits aren t due until October 26 th so you still have plenty of time to prepare a kit! As you are willing to open your eyes and ears to the world s needs, you open yourself up to relationship with the ones God loves. Many will be blessed by your generous hearts. A note about School Kits: Because of regulations of some governments where supplies will be sent, UMCOR cannot use items with patriotic icons, emblems or religious symbols. Made in the USA is okay. Flags, crosses, etc., are not. Crayola brand crayons have an American flag in 2 places: one near the top of the box and the other is on the bottom. Either cut out or cover with a permanent marker. There are samples on the kit display table at each center. 2 Called to Serve As members of Hope UMC we are all in covenant together to Faithfully Participate in the ministries of the church. There are eight (8) primary Ministry Teams that all work together to accomplish the Mission of the Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Below are brief descriptions of the purpose of these Ministry Teams. Worship: works with the pastor and others to provide worship that focuses on God and helps people of all ages to grow in their relationship with God and be equipped for daily living as faithful disciples in the world today. Education: works to provide opportunities for all ages to grow in their understanding of the gospel and be equipped for daily living as faithful disciples in the world today. Evangelism & Member Care: works with the congregation to welcome all people and care for all members to help them know and respond to the love of God in Christ as disciples. Missions: works to provide opportunities for all ages to share God s love through witness and service in the community and world to live as disciples transforming the world. Staff-Parish Relations: works to build a strong positive relationship between the pastor, staff and congregation so that the congregation makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Trustees: serve as Christian stewards to care for all local church property, buildings and equipment to further the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ Finance: proposes a budget, then raises, manages and distributes the financial resources of the congregation to support the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ Nominations: identifies, nominates and evaluates Christian spiritual leadership so the congregation can fulfill its mission to make disciples of Jesus for the transformation of the community and world. 3 VBS UPDATE During VBS week, the kids brought in money donations to be used to purchase school supplies for Upper Des Moines. Our generous little givers and their families brought in $175!!! This was enough to purchase the following: 7 back packs, 24 spiral notebooks, 6 composition notebooks, 20 pocket folders, 4 packages filler notebook paper, 12 packs of markers, 10 packs of colored pencils, 5 sets dry erase markers, 6 fiskars scissors, 4 packs of index cards, 4 pencil boxes and 32 pairs of socks. In addition, any of the food items that the congregation donated for VBS week that were not used, were also brought to Upper Des Moines. They were very grateful for the VBS donations they received from Hope UMC!!! UPPER DES MOINES OPPORTUNITY, INC. The shelves at Upper Des Moines are in desperate need of replenishing! They are asking for anything because EVERYTHING is low! Here are a few special requests...jam/jellies, dish soap, laundry detergent, saltine crackers, peanut butter, instant potatoes, shampoo, toothpaste, canned fruit, pastas (elbow macaroni, etc.). 4 On September 16 the Joy Bells youth hand bell choir will begin practices at 3:30 pm. The practices are held in the church chapel and last about an hour. There are 11 members in the choir all of which are in 4 th, 5 th and 6 th grades here at PAC and the Pocahontas Catholic School. We enjoy being together and learning new things about another musical instrument. The other great thing about this group is that it is ecumenical and we enjoy working together throughout the year. We hope we are ready for a performance in church later in October. Watch for that date in the bulletin and newsletter. You are invited to join our Adult Sunday School and be Transformed! Starting Sunday, Sept. 20th Coffee & 8:45 Class 9:00 Is a changed life really possible? If we re honest, most of us would say no. Maybe you ve tried numerous programs that promise big changes, but in reality, they deliver very little results. You long for transformation, but don t know where to begin. Well, there is good news for you! Life change is possible, because God created us to grow, to change, and to experience adventure. In this series by Chip Ingram, based on Ephesians 4, we will learn how true life change can happen to each of us. This fresh approach to spiritual transformation is designed to move us from the frustration of failure to the freedom we have in Christ. Please bring a friend and join us as we begin this new 12 week series entitled Transformed: the Miracle of Life Change starting on Sunday, Sept. 20th. We will gather at 8:45 for coffee and conversation, with class beginning promptly at 9:00. Hope to see you there!

5 Calling all Sunday school teachers and small group leaders: There are resources for you in the church library at Pocahontas! There are over 100 VHS tapes and DVDs available that could be used as a supplement to Sunday school materials or for discussion groups. For the youngest set, there are episodes of "Quigley's Village", "McGee and Me" and "Veggie Tales". Older students may enjoy "Left Behind", "Left Behind 2" or Soul Surfer". Adult-geared titles include "Courageous" and "Fireproof". And there are many more! There are also over 20 sets of materials (combinations of books/cassette tapes/vhs tapes/dvds) suitable for small group studies or adult Sunday school that have been used in the past, but could be used again by a different group. The latest addition to our collection is entitled "Invitation to Psalms". These items are located on the far right shelving in the library labeled "Class Resources". You can browse ALL available titles from the comfort of your own home, courtesy of Elaine Cook. 7 Leadership Team Meeting Notes August 13, 2015 Place: Pocahontas Center, 7:00 pm Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Chris Radig, Ray Timan, Carol Hallman, Elaine Cook, Linda Ferguson, Kathy Johnson, Carol McCurdy, Donnie McLain, Sharon Hauswirth, Don Ferguson and Judy Pursley. Pastor Jerry opened the meeting. Pastor read from the Shift that deals with going from Serve Us to Service. He then said a prayer. Minutes stood as approved. A combined Treasurer s and Finance Committee Report were given. We are still receiving less in 2015 than in A motion was made and seconded to approve the treasurer s report. Please be sure that when you turn in a bill/invoice to be paid that you include the information about which line item of the budget it is to be paid from. This will help our new Office Manager. The stewardship campaign was set for Nov Chris Radig motioned that the money for the accompanying books be paid from the Cookbook Fund line item. It is $9.00 per book, $830 total and we will ask that those who can reimburse us the cost of their book. Ray T. seconded. Motion carried. The Soup and Pie Supper date was set for Nov.4. Cost will be $6.00 still. We are studying the last chapter in Shift: Leading the Charge Without Getting Trampled. Pastor asked us to answer these two questions 1) What section of the chapter captured your interest most and why? 2) What, When & How will we continue to make these Shifts from Inward to Outward Focus in our mission and ministries? Each of us gave our answers. A lot of discussion followed. We looked at a letter from the Dist. Supt. Rev. Tom Carver on Three Elements of a Church Vision. It needs to be: Inspired by God, Outward Focused and Empower people to act. Ministry Team Reports: Worship: There wasn t a meeting this month. We will have guests from the Stephen Ministry on Aug 30. On Aug 23 our campers will share their experiences at camp. Education: Pastor reported that the Ministry Team was very pleased with the VBS experience. The Ministry Team went over budget so a motion was made by Donnie to take the additional money from the Cookbook fund. Don F. seconded. Motion approved. VBS will have to adjust their budget for next year. Sunday school will start on Sept.20. Evangelism: A basket of apples with a welcome back sign and a prayer card for teachers will be placed in the HS /MS commons for the teachers to pick up when they come in on Wed., Aug. 19th.

8 Keep the Elementary School in your prayers. They are working very hard to get ready for the start of school. Missions: Pastor reported that material for Ingathering kits is being collected and a mission trip is being talked about for next summer. Trustees: Don F. said that the back storm door is on at the parsonage, railing and carpet is on the steps at the Poky center. There is a new vacuum cleaner at Plover. We need to get pricing for a new piano in the Poc. sanctuary and the Plover entrance and sanctuary painting. Trustees are looking into putting the cross back up at the Poc. center. Next meeting will be on Sept, 10 at 7:00pm. Pastor closed with prayer. September Altar flowers (Pocahontas): Truth Circle. 3. Food Pantry (UDMO) Remembrance Days are Sept. 6 and 13. Their supplies are getting very low so are in need of all kinds of non-perishable food items and paper goods. 4. We need to be working on filling the Fall Ingathering Kits. Now is a good time to buy school supplies when they are on sale. Remember there are school kits, health kits, layette kits & sewing kits which are the most popular ones to buy for, but there are others also. See me or Judy Timan for more information. 5. The N.W. District Annual Meeting will be Sat. Sept. 19th at St. Paul's UMC in Cherokee. It will be a joy to see their newly remodeled church after a terrible fire 3 years ago. Please plan to attend and talk about it to all whom you think would like to go. Let's represent Hope Methodist with a large attendance - it is a close venue. Guest speaker is Rita Vallery, UMW Iowa Conference Pres. Also Naomi Wittstruck will have a short message - she is the acting director of Bidwell-Riverside in Des Moines. Noon Lunch is $7.00 and reservations must be made by September 13 to Dixie Gottsch, at OR the Cherokee church office (712) by September 14. Coffee and Registration is at 8:30 on September 19. Please note: A monetary collection will be taken for Bidwell-Riverside in lieu of paper products! 6. An executive meeting will be in the Friendship Room at 12:00, Sept NOTICE OF CHANGE September 17, (at 2:00) UMW meeting will be about Pocahontas County Parks, by Corrine Peterson. Monica will prepare the Worship Center and the UMW officers will serve the coffee afterwards. 8.
