2 God Be With You For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 NRSV My last Sunday to lead worship and share the sacrament of Holy Communion with you will be June 4 th at 9 a.m. in Pocahontas as we begin the New 2017 Summer Worship Schedule. This will also be the Day of Pentecost the third Great Festival of the church! I hope you will be able to attend worship and will stay for the brunch potluck after worship. As I reflect on the season of these past four years of ministry and outreach that we have shared together, it has been filled with growth and change and has gone by very fast. It has been filled with both celebrations and sorrows, new life and death, growth and decline. Such are the seasons of our lives both individually and collectively. Hope UMC is at a very important decision making point of its life. Just as individuals go through seasons of relationships with other individuals and organizations, so does the church. Your prayers and faithful participation in the decision making process are vitally important to the future ministry and outreach of all three congregations. The Leadership Team is preparing to have informational meetings after worship in the very near future. Watch for the announcements of these informational meetings and plan to be present and participate in the decision making. When I move to my new appointment on June 23, I will no longer be your pastor. I hope we will continue to be friends and co-missioners with Christ for the kingdom of God. 3 A message from Pastor Elijah Elijah Wle Nagbe was born and raised in the West African Nation of Liberia. He is the only brother of three sisters, born to a Methodist family. Elijah's great-great grandfather was one of the natives who welcomed American Methodist Missionaries in his village to evangelize the gospel. Elijah is what some would call a "Cradle Methodist." He was born into the United Methodist Church and raised there. Elijah graduated from the United Methodist undergraduate Seminary in Liberia in 1985 with a Bachelor of Theology, B.Th. Upon his graduation, he served two United Methodist congregations from He was awarded an academic scholarship to study at Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO, from where he earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and a Master of Theological Studies in 1992 and 1994, respectively. In addition to his theological education, Elijah also earned a Master of Arts in Applied Sociology Non-Profit Leadership from the United Methodist related Oklahoma City University in Oklahoma in Elijah has been residing in the United States for 28 years. He is an Elder in the United Methodist Church. He served United Methodist Churches in Missouri and Oklahoma. He also served as a Staff Chaplain with the Missouri Department of Corrections for several years. Elijah currently lives in Pennsylvania and has three daughters, Setonee (14), Emily (12) and Mboweh Elisha Nagbe (6). Pastor Elijah's first Sunday with us will be July 9th.

4 Summer 2017 Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp! Without a doubt, UM Camp Okoboji is the greatest camp around! Their 100+ years of service is solid proof! If you have never been to this camp, once you experience UM Camp Okoboji, you will want to return summer after summer. We want everyone who wants to go to camp to be able to go. The church asks that parents or guardians pay 25% of the cost of camp if they are able to. We also can t stress enough that if you are not able to pay the 25% ~ DO NOT let this stop you or your children from attending camp! There are many funding resources available to allow anyone who wants to go to camp to be able to go. Please bring ALL camp registration forms to Pastor Jerry [unless you are paying 100% of the cost yourself]. Let him know at that time if a scholarship is needed in order for someone to attend camp. 6 VBS NEWS!! SAVE THE DATES June :45 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Education Team is getting geared up for our VBS Day Camp, June 26-29!!! It will be here before we know it!!! Be watching for those clipboards to be coming around during church lots of opportunities to volunteer and donate...we can't do this without many helping hands. If you miss the clipboards during church, be sure to stop by the church office to sign up there!! We are asking that you please help children get their registration forms filled in and back to the church office ASAP! There is so much behind the scenes planning that goes into this special week and early registration is so helpful. We also ask that you be praying for the children who will be attending VBS, the camp staff, as well as those serving and helping to bring this special week together. Finally, we invite you to attend our Backyard BBQ Party on Thursday evening, June 29th at 6:00 p.m. Join us for supper, a program and lots of fun to finish up our week of getting "ROOTED!" 9 Thank you for your diligence in finding the specific items for the cleaning buckets and layettes. They will be delivered to Annual Conference June 10 th. We received an from the Midwest Mission Distribution Center informing churches of the urgent need for cleaning buckets. This came Monday, May 15 th, and already 4,000 cleaning buckets had been sent in the month of May to flood victims in Missouri and Illinois. There is always a need for the cleaning buckets and Thank You for being a part of sending more to them via Annual Conference. Safe-T Home Update We have received $4,529 towards our 2017 goal of $7,000 for a Safe-T Home in Haiti. We are well on our way to completing our goal. Thank you for your continued support of this project.

10 Leadership Team Meeting Notes May 11, :00 p.m. at the Pocahontas Center Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Chris Radig, Melissa Rahn, Carol Hallman, Elaine Cook, Linda Ferguson, Dixie Gottsch, Brad Cook, Carol McCurdy, Kathy Johnson, Don McLain, Judy Timan and Judy Pursley. Pastor Jerry opened with a prayer. Minutes were read silently. Linda F. asked that Pastor Elijah's daughter's ages be struck from the minutes. It was done and Don made a motion to approve the corrected minutes. Dixie seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer's Report: In April, we collected $20,597. This gave us a total of $73,237 year to date. It is $11,163 less than we had last year to date. Our expenses for April were $15,235. This gave us $5,382 cash in the Budget Account after borrowing $650 from the Soup and Pie line Item before. Elaine C. moved to accept the Treasurer's Report. Linda F. seconded. Motion approved. The Leadership Team discussed chapter 3 in Membership to Discipleship. Pastor asked, "What grabbed your attention the most?" We decided the chapter was about relationships. It is Discipleship as a contact sport. There are different models of relationships. Six different relationships need to be formed for someone to be interested in attending regularly. We need to make introductions to people of like interests, ages, etc. Read Chapter 4 for the next time. This is moving from the old model of Christian Education to a new form. The Future of Hope UMC: Linda F. read from her notes that we each had a copy of about a meeting with Tom Carver, District Superintendent. Dissolving the blend hasn't been done before, but could be if any of the three centers wanted out of it, then it no longer exists. There would have to be a church conference meeting, which Tom would have to lead. It needs to be handled in a positive manner. There was a lot of discussion that followed. We need to make plain to all the members why it is coming to this and if we dissolved the blend then Pastor Elijah would still be the Pocahontas congregation's pastor. Linda is to call and get information on a quarter-time pastor. Apportionment number is based on income from the general operating budget.

11 Ministry Team Reports: Worship: Carol H said that we are moving into a summer routine. There will be one service in June at 9:00 AM at the Pocahontas Center. There was a short discussion on the time. Carol made a motion to make 9:00 a.m. the starting time of the single service at the Pocahontas Center for the entire summer. Linda seconded it and it was unanimously carried as a transition period for Pastor Elijah. Education: Pastor Jerry said the team is "Gung Ho on VBS". Outreach: Pastor and Melissa have been updating the membership rolls. We need current addresses for Amber Henderson, Misty Henderson, Eileen Johnson, Crystal Sawvell and Haley Tornabane. Missions: Dixie G. said that the clipboards for the kits are out and the items are due back on May 21. They will be put together on June 5. The Free Saturday Supper is on May 20. The Mobile Pantry will be on Wednesday, May 24. Bob Reinhart asked for a pick up to haul the pallets to Brand FX. Sunday, September 24 will be the Upper Des Moines Food Walk. The next meeting will be on July 26, at 5:00PM. SPRC: Linda F. told us that June 4 will be Pastor Jerry's last Sunday. There will be a brunch for Jerry and Amy following the service. On June 23 they will be moving out of the parsonage. UMW: Judy T. said that Peg Studer talked about her trip to Israel at the last meeting. Pastor called our attention to the sheet that told of the School for Lay Ministry. Donnie closed the meeting with a prayer. We have been informed that Pastor Jerry s last Sunday at Hope UMC will be June 4, There will be a potluck brunch and fellowship gathering following the 9:00 a.m. church service in Pocahontas to say good-bye and wish Pastor Jerry and Amy good Are you looking for the best vacation of the year? Then come to the Ashram July 10-13, a retreat in a lovely wooded area in Southwest Iowa (near Griswold). What is an Ashram? It means, "Away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life." Who is it for? It's for families, singles and it is non-denominational. There is time to rest, laugh, enjoy each other, eat good meals, meet new friends and pray. There will be a short program at 10:00 a.m. METHODIST-LUTHERAN GOLF OUTING Summer is here...yeah!!! The annual Methodist-Lutheran golf outing will be held Sunday, June 11, Golf sign up will be at 3:15 and golfing should start at 3:30. It will be fun golf with a grill your own meat/potluck supper to follow about 6:00. There will be a sign up sheet.
