2 What Does a RESET look like for you? To reset something is, literally, to set it back to its original purpose and design. When an electronic device is functioning in a less-than-optimal way, you can reset it so that whatever was stuck gets unstuck and all the connections can run smoothly again. In life, this reset happens first on the inside, where our deep-seated cravings for significance and satisfaction live. That part of us that longs for fulfillment, the part that sometimes asks, Is this all there is in life? That s the part that leads the change in the reset of a human soul. We began a new series in worship on Sept. 25 th using this RESET theme to help people discover Jesus as the ultimate reset in their lives. We will consider these four resets that will truly make a difference in these areas of your life: Sept. 25: Jesus, Reset My Heart - It All Starts Here Oct. 2: Jesus, Reset My Mind - I Am What I Think About Oct. 9: Jesus, Reset My Voice - Good News for Bad Times Oct. 16: Jesus, Reset My Hands - Hands at Work This is the perfect opportunity to invite and bring your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers to worship with you to grow deeper in their faith, or perhaps encounter God for the first time. 3 Called to Serve As members of Hope UMC we are all in covenant together to Faithfully Participate in the ministries of the church. There are eight (8) primary Ministry Teams that all work together to accomplish the Mission of the Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Below are brief descriptions of the purpose of these Ministry Teams. Worship: works with the pastor and others to provide worship that focuses on God and helps people of all ages to grow in their relationship with God and be equipped for daily living as faithful disciples in the world today. Education: works to provide opportunities for all ages to grow in their understanding of the gospel and be equipped for daily living as faithful disciples in the world today. Outreach & Member Care: works with the congregation to welcome all people and care for all members to help them know and respond to the love of God in Christ as faithful disciples in the world today. Missions: works to provide opportunities for all ages to share God s love through witness and service in the community and world to live as disciples transforming the world. Staff-Parish Relations: works to build a strong positive relationship between the pastor, staff and congregation so that the congregation makes disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Trustees: serve as Christian stewards to care for all local church property, buildings and equipment to further the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.. Finance: proposes a budget, then raises, manages and distributes the financial resources of the congregation to support the mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Nominations: identifies, nominates and evaluates Christian spiritual leadership so the congregation can fulfill its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the community and world. 4 HOPE UMC FREE SATURDAY SUPPER Saturday ~ October 29, 2016 Serving from 5-6 p.m. At HOPE UMC, Pocahontas Center There will be many opportunities to help prepare, serve and clean-up. Watch for the clipboard in worship Or call Please check the coat rack at the west entry of the Pocahontas Center. There are a few coats that have been there for awhile. Winter is approaching!

5 Leadership Team Meeting Sept.15, 2016 Place: Pocahontas Center, 7:00 pm Attendance: Pastor Jerry, Chris Radig, Kevin Hauswirth, Ray Timan, Carol Hallman, Moira Hopkins, Dixie Gottsch, Linda Ferguson, Carol McCurdy, Shela Blomker and Judy Pursley. Chris called the meeting to order. For devotions, Pastor Jerry shared from Now s the Time, which is part of the Back to Church materials followed with a prayer. Minutes were read silently and Ray made the motion to approve the minutes. Carol seconded. They were approved as read. A Treasurer s Report was given by Kevin. Offerings in July and Aug. were good, but Sept. offerings so far are low. We did have $6,365 total funds available at the end of August, which is down. Moira made the motion to approve the Treasurer s Report and Dixie seconded. Motion carried. Linda had us look at the 2017 Form I-Pastoral Support Report. SPRC recommended giving Pastor Jerry a $3,000 raise, His salary for 2017 will be $54,000. His insurance premium will go up 7.5%. He also carries a high deductible. Linda made the motion to accept the new figures given on Form I. Shela seconded. Motion passed. Melissa is currently making $23,000 without benefits. SPRC recommended giving her a $1,000 raise next year. By all reports she is doing a great job. Linda made the motion to give Melissa $24,000 a year in Shela seconded and the motion passed. Pastor had us look at the Mission and Ministry Plan for We have to turn this form in at the Charge Conference on Oct.9th. In connection with this he also sent us an asking us six questions that we were to answer and bring with us to the meeting. This was to aid us in filling out the conference form. Ministry Team Reports: Worship Ministry Team: Carol H. said that they haven t had a meeting. Choir practice has begun. Worship times changed on Sept.4 and Sunday school has started. They will have a meeting in October. Education Ministry Team: Moira reported that Promotion Sunday took place on Sept. 11.We have new kids in Sunday school. The Ministry Team has five Bibles to give to third graders. Three of which have been given out already. VBS will be held in the third week of June Outreach Ministry Team: Pastor said that the Ministry Team has been working on the Back to Church Sunday follow-up.

6 Missions Ministry Team: Dixie reported that the Mobile Food Pantry is Sept. 21 from 4:30-6pm. The Walk for UDMO is Sept.25. We will be having a 5:30 pm supper for Jane and Larry Keyes on Sept. 26. They will share a program about their work with Africa Univ. at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 will be the First Free Saturday Supper. Blanket Sundays are from the second Sunday to the last Sunday in October. Ingathering Kits are due Oct. 23 and we will be inventorying them after that, so they are out of Hospitality Hall before the Soup and Pie Supper. A lengthy discussion on who could come to the Free Saturday Supper followed. The main focus is on those that come to the Mobile Food Pantry, but others are welcome also to come and visit with those at the table that they sit at. This is what we are trying to accomplish in the shifts that we are making in our thinking, behavior and attitudes. It is basically an outreach tool to serve our neighbors and get to know them by visiting with them at the tables. Trustees Ministry Team: Carol McCurdy reported that they did a walk around at each center. The Pocahontas Center has a leak in the west side of the sanctuary roof. The downstairs women s bathroom will be remodeled. The Plover Center has roof and water damage. Havelock has moisture issues causing tile damage. The entryway needs painting. UMW: Shela said that the representative from CAASA was here to talk to UMW this afternoon. The agency deals with sexual abuse. They need new socks, underwear, sports bras & sweatshirts. The district UMW meeting is Saturday Sept 24 at Laurens. So far 8 people are going. Pastor said the Nominations Ministry Team met last night. We looked at the brochure Chaos, Solitude, and Community. This gives information on two, 3-Day Retreats at Wesley Woods in Indianola, IA. Pastor, Amy and Judy P. are going to the first session Oct. 24 th to 27 th. Chris closed the meeting with a prayer. When you bring a new dog into your home, a wash of great joy can become a trial of perseverance as your furry pal chews, digs, yaps, and yes, piddles her way through every room in the house. Allison Pittman learned this all too well when she adopted a tiny, shiny puppy of indefinable breed(s). Stella wasted no time in turning her home upside-down as only a pup can. As could be expected, six weeks of obedience school covered the much needed basics sit, stay, come, and down. What Allison didn t expect was the spiritual benefit she would receive as each Saturday lesson revealed a fascinating metaphor. Charity Circle - October 6 Truth Circle - October 6 Peace Circle - October 12 IA Conference UMW Annual Meeting - Decorah - October 8 The September 15th meeting of UMW had a very informative program by Jenny Ahlers, an advocate from CAASA (Centers Against Abuse and Sexual Assault). She explained the redistricting of services for Pocahontas and also told of all the ways they serve our area. A brochure is on the UMW bulletin board. Through our participation in United Methodist Women we contribute to the support of three national mission institutions located in Iowa -- $1 to each per UMW member. Last month our focus was Bidwell Riverside Center. This month it is Shesler Hall located in Sioux City. The current building was completed in 1917 as a residence for Methodist deaconesses who did their mission work in the poor sections of Sioux City. By 1922 the times and needs of the community had changed and Shesler became a room-and-board residence for young women who worked or went to school in Sioux City. In 1985 the times and needs had changed again and Shesler began to focus on serving a particularly deserving group women with special needs who require a supportive living environment. The mission statement says: Shesler Hall is providing transitional housing, life skills and holistic health to women in need. It provides women of all ages the opportunity to experience personal and social growth while residing in a supportive Christian environment.

9 THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU The hand bells were a memorial gift to our congregation 18 years ago. During that time there have been various hand bell groups. Currently we have three active groups Joy Bells, Chancel Chimes and Twelve Bells. The bells had not been serviced or professionally cleaned in those 18 years. This summer the bells were shipped to the factory and serviced and refurbished. They just arrived back in time for fall practice. The bell ringers would like to thank all members of Hope UMC, the finance team, and the leadership team for your generosity in taking care of the bells. The bells look amazing and sound wonderful. In the very near future, you will be able to listen to them and see how they shine! JOY BELL NEWS The Joy Bells are back and have started practice. We have eleven members in grades 4, 5 and 6. We hope to have some songs ready by October 23 and will play at the Pocahontas Center at the 10:00 am service. Please invite all friends and family to come and listen to them. We are excited to share what we have learned.
