Danilo Soriano Pastor Religious Education Tel: 630/ Parish Office Tel: 630/ Parish Office Website: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. each of the 350 martyrs. A Web site visit is possible at Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women s contemplative prayer and spiritual hospitality in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for

St. Luke Christmas Dinner November 16, 2018 Please help with your Christmas Dinner Auction and Raffle items CCW is now collecting Eat, Drink and be Merry items to be auctioned and raffled at the annual Christmas Dinner. Things having to do with eating, dining, food, spirits, celebrating, and making merry are welcome. Think festive and fun! Create your own unique basket or donate items for the auction and raffle. The monies raised fund the many programs and events that CCW provides free of charge throughout the year. Auction items may be dropped of at the Parish Office during regular office hours. Please clearly mark them CCW. There is also a CCW collection bin near the east door in the hallway. Please bring your auction items by Sunday, November 4th. Tickets for the annual St. Luke Christmas Dinner on Friday, November 16th, are now on sale. Come Eat, Drink and Be Merry! This festive event includes a bountiful buffet, beverages, and desserts. There are also both silent and verbal auctions and raffle baskets you won t want to miss. The doors open at 5:30pm with dinner served promptly at 6:30pm. Only about 20 percent of our genes determine how long the average person lives. This means that our lifestyle and environment will greatly shape our health and happiness in later years. Genetic predisposition is certainly a part of longevity, but, yes, by itself, it may not be enough, says Dr. Beata Styka, a geriatric medicine physician at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, IL. She explains that while we cannot control or alter our genes, we are in control of our habits and certain environmental factors. One key thing that we can do to keep our hearts healthy is to keep our stress levels down. Exercising, staying engaged, eating a healthy diet and spending time with friends and family are all ways that people can relieve stress, says Dr. Styka, who agrees that stress can exacerbate health issues. She offers these additional four tips for keeping stress in check: Learn to accept that life brings constant change and that there are many things that you cannot change or control. Don t let fear take over and control your life. Be aware of your limitations. Don t overextend yourself. Know what you cherish in life and make those things a priority.

7 THE GENIUS OF GENEROSITY Come, let us join our friends above who have obtained the prize, and on the eagle wings of love to joys celestial rise. Let saints on earth unite to sing with those to glory gone, for all the servants of our King in earth and heaven are one. Kansas pastor Jack Wellman has been credited with the insight that there is a certain genius in generosity. He explains that when we open our hands figuratively speaking to allow something to pass through our fingers, rather than holding it with tightly clenched fists, God can give us new blessings. God cannot pour more into hands that are already clinging tightly to what they hold, says Wellman. Whether material goods or time, ideas or talents, money or energy, the gifts God has given us so generously are to be shared just as freely with others. With our hands continually open to receive, give and receive again, God s genius cycle of generosity goes on and on. LIFELONG SAINTS Rather than limit the celebration of saints to one Sunday, some churches now observe a Season of Saints from World Communion Sunday (the first Sunday in October) to All Saints Sunday (the first Sunday in November). Saints aren t merely exceptional Christians, writes worship director Taylor Burton-Edwards. Instead, they re simply believers, all of whom are undergoing a lifetime of transformation into Christ s own people. Pointing to a saint-themed hymn by Charles Wesley, Burton-Edwards notes that the lyrics are intended to be an anthem for a lifetime, not a once-yearly occasion. STICK WITH IT! If I ve learned anything about friendship, it s to hang in, stay connected, says journalist Jon Katz. Don t walk away, don t be distracted, don t be too busy or tired, don t take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. This applies to church life too. When we re annoyed by some aspect of congregational life or caught in conflict with other members, it s tempting to drift away to another church or no church. Even when all is fine, we sometimes let church take a back seat. But our bonds with the family of God are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. For the sake of the benefits we gain and give, may we hang in [and] stay connected with our church family. May we not walk away [or] be distracted,... be too busy or tired.
