5 Stewardship Spotlight... Druid Hills Commissioning & Retreat Twenty-five parishioners who volunteer at Druid Hills Academy met on Saturday morning, Sept. 23, to contemplate and celebrate our ministry. The retreat, led by Fr. John Michalowski, SJ, was the first in the parish's seven years of partnership with Druid Hills. Parishioner & volunteer tutor Pat Adair, Druid Hills and Fr. John. We delved into the spiritual aspect of our volunteer ac vi es through prayer, readings, songs, contempla on, and conversa on with our fellow volunteers. We were honored to have as special guests Druid Hills Principal Dr. Raymond Barnes and Parent Advocate Carmela Head. Many thanks to Father John and to our dedicated volunteers! Suzanne Wi ebort, St Peter Chair Druid Hills Partnership Druid Hills Partnership Volunteers, staff and Fr. John on Sept. 23, 2017 Garden of Good & Eaten We hosted fans as the Panthers took on the Bills and this past Sunday when the New Orleans Saints came to town. So far our Garden of Eaten results have been very promising: over 1,200 hot dogs sold, along with 800 drinks, 300 bags of chips and 500 cookies during our first 2 weeks! Our fantas c kitchen team has cried over the slicing, dicing and sautéing of 50 lbs of onions, while cooking almost 8 lbs of chili for our customers to slather on the dogs. We have enjoyed excep onal volunteerism: it takes 30+ volunteers each game to help ensure our success. Several of our volunteers are veterans but we ve also been blessed with great support and call to ac on from other ministries the Men s Group, Young Adult Ministry and Faith Forma on, Thank you! We would love to have you volunteer to help and/or come by a er Mass and treat yourself, family and friends to a delicious treat that support St. Peter s and our community. Hopefully we ll see you soon! If you would like to volunteer please visit h p://bit.ly/2vkmdll or the parish website. WEEK OF PRAYER & ACTION OCTOBER LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR. Ruth turned her dreams into reality thanks to DACA. What now? Ruth (not her real name) takes pleasure in doing simple things other parents may take for granted. One of the most notable is she can drive her kids to soccer prac ces, school and community service events without worrying about being stopped by law enforcement. But the joy and freedom Ruth experiences from taking her children to their ac vi es may be in jeopardy. Ruth came to the United States at age nine. Since she arrived, she always lived in fear of being separated from her family due to her legal status in this country. She was young when she made the U.S. her home and didn t understand all the legal challenges she would later face. Ruth says she was always forced to live in the shadows, not being able to fully socialize with other kids. She knew from a young age she could not do or enjoy the same ac vi es they did, including simple things like going on road trips with her family. Con nued on page 7 October 1,

7 Week of Prayer: Solidarity with Pope Francis Join in a Week of Prayer in Solidarity with Pope Francis's Interna onal Migra on Campaign October 7 to 13 Pope Francis is launching a global campaign to support migrants and refugees around the world. In collabora on with the annual celebra on of Respect Life Month in October, the bishops in the U.S. are asking Catholics around the country to help kick off the campaign by taking part in a week of prayer and ac on for migrants and refugees from October More informa on at and under Social Justice on our website. LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR Ruth turned her dreams into reality thanks to DACA. What now? (con nued from page 5) As an adult, Ruth s situa on got even worse. She was not able to con nue with her dream of going to college and becoming a prominent lawyer or working for law enforcement. In fact, she could not even obtain a simple job or drive, much less take trips with her kids or go to an emergency room without being asked for iden fica on. When former President Obama introduced DACA, Ruth says her life completely changed. DACA is the Deferred Ac on for Childhood Arrivals program. Over 780,000 youth have received protec on from the DACA program since its incep- on by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in DACA provides no legal status or government benefits, but does provide recipients with temporary employment authoriza on to work in the United States and receive a reprieve from deporta on. Because of DACA, Ruth was finally able to come out of the shadows and obtain her dream job. She works at a school and is proud to serve her community. With DACA, she could obtain a driver s license, buy a house, and take her oldest son on a road trip to visit colleges. Most recently, she could help him achieve his dream of being accepted to a four-year university. Ruth has gone back to school to further her educa on, and soon she will obtain a bachelor s degree in accoun ng. Ruth says she would not have been able to reach most of the achievements she has now if it wasn t for DACA. Her dreams con nue. She hopes to finish her bachelor s degree and help her daughter go to college by suppor ng her financially and emo onally. The Catholic response On September 5, the Administra on announced the DACA program will be terminated in the next six months. The future is uncertain for hundreds of thousands of people like Ruth who came to the United States as a child. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) denounces the decision to end DACA and strongly encourages Congress to find a legisla ve solu on. The cancella on of the DACA program is reprehensible. It causes unnecessary fear for DACA youth and their families. These youth entered the U.S. as minors and o en know America as their only home This decision is unacceptable and does not reflect who we are as Americans. As people of faith, we say to DACA youth regardless of your immigra on status, you are children of God and welcome in the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church supports you and will advocate for you. Jesuit Network Mobilizes in Defense of DACA and Dreamers Dream Act Bills - See our website s Social Jus ce page to take ac on and write Senators and Congress: Senate: Dream Act of 2017 ( S ) House of Representa ves: Dream Act ( HR3440 ) October 1,
