The Spiritual Exercises of Igna us are for those who seek: greater inner freedom deeper inner healing integrity and authen city renewed fire and life energy deep, abiding peace renewed sense of purpose, direc on, meaning a deeper sense of the sacred clearer sense of God s presence and ac vity in one s life a greater sense of connec on with oneself, loved ones, the human family, and all crea on a spirit of discernment a thirst for jus ce and peace a desire to serve others a deeper, more vibrant knowledge of and rela onship with God/Jesus to discern whether or not one is being invited to the complete Igna an Spiritual Exercises What personal commitment am I expected to make? 8 Reimagining the Ignatian Examen Your daily conversation with God begins here St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, called the Examen prayer the most important quarter of an hour of a person s day. When practiced regularly the Examen connects us to consciousness to the divine presence that is with us at all times and in all things and clarifies our response to it. We find through it a path towards what our hearts most deeply desire, and develop our growing friendship in love with God. Get to know more about this prayer over 4 weeks in the Reimaging the Examen small group. Whether you know the Examen prayer or are new to it, the Ignatian Spirituality team will bring you to a full understanding. Small group members will be asked to pray the Examen twice daily, to journal their experience and to attend the weekly faith-sharing session. The daily time commitment is minutes. 10 Ignatian Spirituality and You St. Igna us Loyola s 10 Guidelines for Nego a ng Life s Journey One June morning, Brendan McManus, SJ, stepped out for a much-needed walk to be exact, a 500-mile hike on Spain s renowned Camino de San ago. A few years earlier, his brother had commi ed suicide, and the tragedy le Brendan physically, psychologically, and spiritually wounded. Something radical was required to rekindle his passion for life and renew his faith in God. In Redemp on Road: From Grief to Peace through Walking the Camino de San ago, McManus tells his story of walking the Camino through the lens of Igna an spirituality. Not surprisingly, he learns a number of lessons along the way for how to nego ate life s journey. 1. Remember that you are a pilgrim, just passing through life. You put yourself on the road, a journey into the unknown, to be open to hear God s call. 2. God is a pilgrim who s always trying to find us, even in difficult situa ons. God is with you even if you are not with God. 3. Walking puts you in touch with your deeper desires, what you really want. Following this longing will bring us to God. 4. Keep on track by following the signs that are found only in reflec on and medita on. Trust your inner compass to guide you. 5. Take me out regularly to reflect on your path (i.e., Review of the Day); be flexible in progressively altering things as you go. Don t be afraid of change. 6. Take me over decisions; they are important crossroads moments in your life. Never make a hasty decision rather, play for me, and ponder the op ons internally before deciding. 7. If you get lost, be humble enough to backtrack to a known, sure spot. Beware of pride driving you on, ge ng you even more lost. 8. Possessions are only temporary; don t hold on to things too ghtly. Prac ce detachment: use things insofar as they are useful, and discard them when they get in the way. 9. You can expect fierce storms on the road. The important thing is not to be deterred from your course but to hang on ghtly to those support structures you know to be sound (prayer, discernment, and reflec on). Don t change course, undo decisions, or alter the structure in midstorm. 10. Protec ng yourself is important, as is having good defenses against whatever comes. This means knowing your own weak spots and unfree areas, as this is where you are likely to be vulnerable. (Igna us recommends for fying your defenses to an cipate challenges.)
