5 Stand in Support of Dreamers In February, St. Peter had an Offering of Le ers to support the BRIDGE Act which would help young people who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children by their parents to stay in the U.S. These young people have grown up here and are s ll in school or are already contribu ng to the economy. Unfortunately, the act died in commi ee, when only 9 senators and 25 representa ves would co-sponsor it. Last week, Senators Lindsay Graham and Richard Durbin have introduced a new bill: The Dream Act of 2017 (S. 1615). It is a bipar san effort to protect immigrant children who entered the U.S. as children and know America as their only home. The Catholic bishops of the U.S. have asked Catholics to support this bill, As Catholics, we have long supported DREAMERS as we believe in protec ng the dignity of every human being, especially that of children. The bill offers qualifying immigrant youth condi onal permanent resident status and a path to full lawful permanent residency and eventual ci zenship. This bill would protect numerous youth, including the es mated 780,000 who received temporary relief from deporta on and employment eligibility through the Department of Homeland Security s Deferred Ac on for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The young people S.1615 seeks to protect are contributors to our economy, veterans of our military, academic standouts in our universi es, and leaders in our parishes and communi es. By clicking on to the Jus ce for Immigrants link on the U.S. Catholic Bishops website - h ps://jus ceforimmigrants.org/category/ac on-alerts/ you can send an to Senators Burr and Tillis urging them to co-support this bill. Supportive Housing Communities/ McCreesh Place - Thanks & News Your volunteer support to SHC made it possible for us to serve 284 formerly homeless residents this past year. That means that 284 people were no longer living on the streets or in shelters, and 69 of those were children! Every resident we serve now has a place to live again. And even more important we have con nued our success rate of more than 95% of our residents remaining in stable housing! We are very proud of this, and hope you are too! Some other new and exci ng news SHC is in the process of purchasing St. John's Place, a 32-unit apartment building which will create addi onal affordable apartments designated for chronically homeless individuals and families living with disabili es. These apartments will serve as an addi onal resource for agencies seeking to eliminate homelessness in Charlo e, where the number of housing op ons does not match the number of men, women and families who need housing and support. SHC has also been selected by the NC Department of Mental Health, Developmental Disabili es and Substance Abuse Services as the only Charlo e agency to operate our community's Project for Assistance in Transi on from Homelessness (PATH) program. The NC PATH Program focuses on providing street outreach to adults living in outside loca ons such as streets, camps, wooded areas, abandoned buildings or under bridges. Once the individual is determined to meet eligibility criteria, case management services are provided to connect the individual with community mental health services and assist with obtaining permanent housing. Thanks again for your partnership that makes this all possible! 7 Catherine s House Catherine s House Car Raffle at St Peter August 12 & 13 The Sisters of Mercy opened Catherine s House 25 years ago in response to the need of the mes. Catherine s House in Belmont provides a wonderful home for women and children who are homeless. The women and children who make Catherine s House their temporary home are the most vulnerable members of our society. They are homeless for many reasons: loss of employment, evic on, abuse or birth of a child with no place to stay. This year is the 25 th anniversary of Catherine s House and they have set a goal to raise $125,000; that is $5,000 for each year of their existence. Janet Blaylock, an Associate of the Sisters of Mercy, will visit St. Peter on August 12 & 13 outside a er each Mass. She shares stories from the following residents who have found a nurturing environment at Catherine s House: How Catherine s House helped me. Catherine s House and all the programs offered here has provided me and my kids a New Life. Without this program I would not have survived. I came to Catherine s House homeless, depressed and broken, no car, no job and no future for me and my kids. Now that I am leaving; I have a car, a house and a job. I now can see a future for me and my kids. Thanks to Catherine s House and everyone who has donated to Catherine s House. It is a wonderful program; I would not have been able to see a future without the help of this program. Thank you! - From Karen I felt like I was in a bad storm, then Catherine s House opened the doors to me and gave me a place of refuse. I literally had no place else to go. A er I got here, I was able to relax and feel safe again. I believe everyone on the staff here was handpicked by God to minister in different ways to residents on an individual basis and collec vely they represent an extension of God s love. I will always appreciate the kindness, compassion and love I have experienced here. This is a wonderful place for women in various difficult situa ons to take a really deep breath and start moving forward again. Thank you from the bo om of my heart. This year the Sisters of Mercy are raffling a New 2017 Honda Civic LX. Tickets are $5.00 for one or a book of six for $ Volunteers will be at the entrance to help you with the purchase of ckets or receive your dona on a er all Masses on August 12 th and 13 th. They will be depending on your generous hearts to con nue this ministry of caring for women and children. Thank you for your past generosity and for whatever assistance you can give them. The sisters ask for your help to make this 25 th anniversary year the best yet. Please keep the ministry in your prayers. You are in the prayers of the Sisters of Mercy. God bless! 7
