When I was growing up I had the no on that to find God s will for me I had to conjure up a future that I would most likely hate and assume that this is what God wanted me to do. Thankfully, I ve come to see that God is not a sadis c tyrant, but a God of love. What God wishes for us is what will bring us our greatest fulfillment and joy. Each one of us is called to greatness, to holiness, to be our own best self. It s important for our children to know that they are part of a great and wonderful story of faith through the ages and that they have a contribu on to make and a role to play. God is their greatest ally in both discovering their true path in life and achieving the good they are called to do through their unique gi s. We must teach our children that their strengths, talents, and yearnings are holy by recognizing and nurturing those gi s as they blossom in their lives. We need to let our children know that they can turn to God for help whenever they need it and that God accompanies them in every one of their joys and sorrows, indeed, in every moment of their lives. Teach them that some mes the most effec ve prayer is simply, God, help me! God is out to help us, not get us. We find God through prayer, in service to others, in sacred scripture, in nature and in a real way in love, because God is love. We hear this phrase so o en it can become a cliché. Yet, it s a most revolu onary no on with prac cal implica ons for how we should live. God as love will only begin to make sense to our children when they experience loving, and being loved, in their daily lives. One good way to facilitate their capacity to love is by encouraging empathy. If our children can iden fy with and feel for others, they will be able to love. Knowing that God is love is a great tool when we feel lost or confused about who we are, why we are here and what God wants of us. Show and tell your children that when they feel lost in their faith, taking the loving ac on will help them find their way. And in a family there will always be some person or situa on that needs a loving response. When children experience love in the family, you are giving them a taste of God. Welcome to St. Patrick s! Psalm 116:12 From the Business Administrator: I was pre y excited a few days ago. Why is that, you ask? Because Deb Hudak showed me a supply of used file folders and labels. With that, I was off to the filing races again. (You know you re an office wonk when you get excited about office supplies. Guilty as charged.) It s just that it s so sa sfying to know where things are. I m new here, so I m s ll learning my way around the office. I ve inherited many files, and I m crea ng my own. I want to find a place for everything, and to put everything in its place. One challenge is that much of my work as an administrator in schools in the past, and now at St. Patrick s involves solving problems for people. That s gra fying work, and it s o en more urgent than filing. We re in a people business, a er all. Some of the problems I faced last week were pre y straigh orward. They involved helping Youth Fron ers staffers, who were ren ng St. Mar n s Hall for training. I now have a be er idea of how our spaces work. And of course, many problems can be turned into opportuni es. For instance, what do you do when you have ques ons about the end of life from a Catholic perspec ve? Consider a ending a talk we re hos ng on October 7, between Masses. That s when a speaker from Catholic United Financial will focus on that very topic. Fr. Al and I met with a CUF representa ve last week. He briefed us about CUF s interest in providing such informa on. Look for details on this opportunity in a few weeks. As for filing? One of my newest files is labeled, Catholic United Financial. Have a great week!
