GROWING IN GRACE JULY 2015 THE TOWER 2 DEAR PARTNERS, If you were not with us on June 14 as we celebrated our 75 th Anniversary, you missed quite a party! What a wonderful day, filled with joyful worship, wonderful fellowship and some really great food! We owe hearty thanks to our Anniversary Committee for a great job of planning, and to a few people in particular who carried the major weight of facilitating it. At the risk of leaving some names out (I apologize ahead of time) Erin Beard, Jennifer Mayo, Doug Becker and several others all went the extra mile to two! Bless you!! Now we are embarking on the next 75 years of St. Luke s history. How will you be a part of that? Remember, we are only here today because of the faithful work of the generations before us who understood their faith was not something to do in their spare time, but dedicated themselves to carrying on the work of God s kingdom as best they understood it. Future generations will be dependent upon our faithfulness today. Please remember we are seeking to have a strong witness to our congregational presence in Bedford as we support and participate in the Habitat for Humanity build coming up this fall. We are seeking to raise $5,000 to support it, and to have lots of people sign up to work over the days of construction. Special envelopes are available at the church to provide a way for you to give financial support now and sign-up sheets will be posted as soon as we know the days and time of construction. Another part of this beginning to the next 75 years of St. Luke s history is the joyful task we will have as of July 15 of welcoming Pastor Robyn Kistemaker as a pastor of our congregation. She and I will function as co -pastors, working equally at the various tasks of ministry and taking the lead in various areas where our gifts and passions might best be used. I would like to offer a few suggestions for ways we can help her establish a good foundation for ministry among and with us, (based on almost 40 years of having personally observed or heard the stories of other colleagues, both those who had good beginnings and those who did not). Help her learn names, and be patient as she learns yours. Give her several opportunities to hear it, see it, and learn it. Take part in activities provided for groups of people to meet and work with her you will get to know her so much better than simply observing her in worship roles. A seminary professor once commented that it would be wise to spend most of your first year in a new call listening and learning the history of congregational members and events. Ideas to change or improve things would best be kept on a list in your desk drawer for the first year until people get to know and trust you as their pastor.) So, don t expect Pastor Robyn to wave a magic wand and to bring sudden transformation to our congregation. Let her get her feet on the ground and build trust in her pastoral gifts (which are numerous!) Finally, keep her in your prayers and let her know you are doing that. With much love your partner in the Gospel of Grace,

GROWING IN GRACE JULY 2015 THE TOWER 3 Out and About Ladies luncheon The Ladies Lunch Group had a wonderful lunch at The Stable Restaurant in Blissfield, MI on June 3rd. Everyone enjoyed their lunches and several people really enjoyed a humongous piece of pie. The peanut butter/chocolate and the coconut cream pies were out of this world! Several ladies from our group who visited the gift shop found something they just had to have! $40 was raised for Habitat for Humanity. Our next lunch will be July 1st. at Pam s Corner on 10th St. downtown, between Jefferson and Monroe street. If you would like to go, please contact Siggi Deckman at or for a reservation. If needed, we can car pool from the church. We would really like to have you join us. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!! A special Thanks goes out to Collin Emerson who has been doing such an amazing job on the flower beds around the church. They really help us see and celebrate God s Amazing paint pallet! Thanks to Andy and Sue Nieman for organizing our community Garden out back and all who are tending the plots. Many will be blessed through your work! Thank You to the 75th Anniversary committee in their fantastic planning of the festivities on June 14th. The hard work that went into making that party a success was really well done! To all who donated cakes, whether for the contest or just to be enjoyed, they were a great addition to the celebration. To our Bishop, Donald Kreiss, thank you so much for being a part of our special day! It was a pleasure having you with us. City BBQ, the food was amazing! The pig was a great thing to see and it was all wonderful. And to our St. Luke s Congregation, 75 years of fellowship and worship! We are all so blessed!!!! To My St. Luke s Family, it was a pleasure being St. Luke s Secretary for the last 14 years. I would like to thank everyone for the cards and prayers. Also, I would like to thank the Congregation for the very nice reception during coffee hour with a delicious cake and the beautiful statue of St. Francis of Assisi. It looks great in my flower garden. Thanks Pastor Frank and Diane for the gift card to P.F. Chang s; it s my favorite! God Bless You All! Ed Brushaber

GROWING IN GRACE JULY 2015 THE TOWER 4 HEALTH MINSISTRY NEWS BEE STINGS We need our bees for making honey, but as we all know, they can sting! Ouch! A mild sting causes a sharp burning pain at the site with a red welt and swelling around it, or even the stinger stuck in the center. If you see the stinger, take it out with your fingernail or a tweezer. Wash the site with soap and water, and apply ice or cold compresses. A home remedy is to rub a wet aspirin over the site. A more moderate sting can be more painful and the swelling will enlarge. It is advisable to use over the counter Hydrocortisone cream or Benadryl, or Calamine lotion. Many people take oral Benadryl but be careful since it will sedate you. A severe sting is a result of several stings, or a previous reaction to a bee sting. Hives may develop with swelling of the throat and tongue. Shock type symptoms can develop with a weak rapid pulse, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, fever, and loss of consciousness. At that point it is called anaphylaxis, call 911 and start CPR if necessary. Check if this person may have a previously ordered epi pen (a shot with epinephrine in it) to give. Preventing bee stings are difficult, but here are some tips: Avoid sweet drinks, etc. while outside keeping a cover on all foods; wear closed toed shoes outside; wearing bright clothing outside attracts bees; be careful mowing the lawn since it may arouse insects; slowly walk away from a bee, and do not swat at them. Many people who have had moderate to severe stings go to an Allergy Dr. for further tests, and may be given an epi pen to keep with them at all times! If you have an epi pen please tell those you are with, and show them how to use it. Enjoy the 4 th and don t get stung by a bee! Blessings, Judy Diener R.N. DID YOU KNOW? 75th Anniversary pictures in the July Tower Are brought to you by the careful eye and talent of Dwayne McKinney. Be sure to take a look at all of the photos he has posted on our Facebook page, as well as in this edition of the Tower! Dwayne became interested in Photography in 2010 while being a constant caregiver to his parents living in North Carolina for 3 years. His first time visiting the Toledo Museum of Art, he had never seen anything like it. He recalls telling friend Cliff Upp it would be so cool to have my photos there one day. Almost an entire year later, he won first place in the Toledo Museum of Art s Portraying Life in Toledo Photography Contest. (This is having won with no formal training.) Since then, he has had 3 more pieces on display at the museum. Dwayne credits his luck in life to being surrounded by good people that truly love and care for him, as well as a strong church family. SUPPLYING OUR FUTURE: Backpacks for Kids in Monroe County. St. Luke s will again be a collection point for the Salvation Army. There will be a collection box in the Narthex beginning the first week of July until Aug. 7th. Needed: Pencils, erasers, pencil cases, tablets, glue, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, rulers, notebooks, etc. The Backpacks are donated but cash donations will be accepted. The objective is to promote academic success and enhance the social and emotional well-being of children in need within their school setting. Please consider donating to this cause!

GROWING IN GRACE JULY 2015 THE TOWER 5 What s Happening in Our Community? ST. Luke s book Club meets about every 6 weeks for casual discussion on chosen books and enjoyable fellowship. They meet at the home of Diane Paine, 7514 Apache Trail. Their next meeting will be on Thursday, July 23 at 7:00P.M to discuss The Ultimate Gift by Jim Stovall. All Are Welcome. ORNAMENTS ARE STILL ON SALE! A terrific way to commemorate 75 years of St. Luke s History is with a collectable ornament. Only $12.50, they are going quickly. Be sure to get yours to give as a gift or a collectable for yourself. They are on sale during coffee hour in the side narthex on Sunday Mornings, or see Lori or Erin in the church office if you have any questions. Get Yours Today! Attention all WELCA Retreaters: The deposit for Retreat has been due for quite some time and we have only heard from a handful of people. By Mid August, the final installment will be due. We understand that this is a busy time, however, if we do not get the reservations in, we might have to relinquish our space at Camp Michindoh. The total cost for Retreat is $140. If you worked a fundraiser and donated to the Palm Sunday bake Sale, the cost is $90; the deposit is $45 and that is what is currently due. You can make a check payable to WELCA RETREATERS and put it in Linda Olrich s box at church, or mail to: 3916 Willys Parkway. Toledo, OH MID-SUMMER ADOPT-A-ROAD July 18th will be the next Adopt-A-Road pick up in Bedford. We will gather at 9:00 A.M. that lovely mid-summer morning to get organized and pick up along our section of Sterns Rd. A sign up sheet is at the sign-up center in the narthex. The more hands, the quicker the task! Baby items needed!!! Unexpected Twins are in the near future for Debra and Paul Manor s Son and family. They are needing gently used baby items for both a boy and girl. They are happy to pay for the items. Please contact Deb Manor: for more information. Any and all help is appreciated. A special offering opportunity in celebration of our 75th anniversary will be provided to help sponsor a Habitat for Humanity build in Temperance this fall. Special offering envelopes are available at the Welcome Center. Our goal is $5,000 for the build and volunteers. The special offering will extend through the summer.

GROWING IN GRACE JULY 2015 THE TOWER 6 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL WRAP UP 2015 THANK YOU to our St. Luke s family for your love and support of Vacation Bible School 2015!! At EVEREST Vacation Bible School (during the week of June 22 nd -June 26 th), the hiking crews experienced God's Word in surprising and unforgettable ways! Every day, leaders reinforced one simple Bible truth which made it easy for kids to remember and apply to real life! St. Luke s hosted 110 children and volunteers each day and they rotated through stations around our church such as Basecamp Sing and Play, Bible Expeditions, KidVid Cinema, Imagination Station, Glacier Games, Kid-Vid Cinema, Summit Celebration, Mountaintop Treats, Preschool Peak & Summit Celebration. Our mission project for the week was raising money to help people attain clean drinking water. Each day we talked about the importance of clean water and about those in the world who do not have access to it. The children of Vacation Bible School generously donated approximately $ to contribute to Sawyer Products (water filters) to help in that effort! We returned to St. Luke s the next Sunday (June 28 th ) to worship together and sing our EVEREST theme song with our St. Luke s family! Thank you to EVERYONE who unselfishly gave of their time, talents and resources before, during, and after to help make this year a HUGE success! Kim Diver Vacation Bible School Director 2015
