GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.2 DEAR PARTNERS, I usually use this column to talk about events around the congregation or lift up a thought for the time of year in the church, but since this is our 75 th Anniversary edition, I thought there should be a record of the beginnings of this family of faith. You may be aware of some of this history, or you may have no idea so I hope you will bear with me in putting this history in print so we all have a fuller appreciation of what we are celebrating and what it took for us to have 75 years of blessings to celebrate marks the 75 th anniversary of St. Luke s Lutheran Church. But there is an interesting story behind its beginning that actually connects St. Luke s to a much older time. The year was A Wesleyan Methodist pastor named Joel B. Sellick came to Bedford Township Michigan to build a church both spiritually and physically. Land was donated to this cause by the Bibb Family who owned the farm to the northwest of the intersection of Sterns and Jackman roads. Pastor Sellick was also a brick mason by trade, and actually built the building itself, as well as the congregation that would worship in it. This area was known as Liberty Corners possibly taking its name from Liberty School which had been built at this intersection a decade or so earlier. The congregation grew. Strong support was given to the work of the congregation by the Liberty Corners Young Ladies Aid Society. In the early years of the 20 th century, the congregation was not able to sustain a full time ministry. The Ladies Aid Society continued to raise funds and provide Sunday school and occasional church services in the building and the Wesleyan Methodist church deeded the building to them. Their ministry continued for many years. One of the members of the Ladies Aid was Katherine Lowe. Her family lived on the farm to the southwest of the intersection and was Lutheran by background. It seems she convinced Harold Yocum, president of the Michigan District of the American Lutheran Church, to plant a mission congregation at Liberty Corners. Arrangements were made and members of Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa Lake came to canvass the area and survey the interest. The year was Within a few months, a congregation was formed, a charter was signed and Pastor A.O. Zeitner of Zion Lutheran Church was called to be the first pastor of what was then called Liberty Corners Lutheran Church. This is where we come into the story. Besides forming a new congregation, the building itself would need some changes. In the first ten years of its life, the members of St. Luke s dug out a basement to install a furnace (prior to that, heat was from a pot-bellied stove in the front of the sanctuary) added a kitchen, fellowship room and restrooms to the back of the building. In the mid-1950 s a parsonage was built next to the church building and occupied by the pastor s family. Also in the 1950 s, the congregation was given the deed to the building and a new name was taken. Liberty Corners Lutheran Church became St. Luke s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Liberty Corners Michigan.

GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.3 The baby-boom came to Bedford in the 1950 s and the congregation grew with the population. A new building was needed. Property was purchased across Jackman road from the original building and bonds were sold to fund the new construction. The first worship service was held in the new building in The old church building continued to be used for Sunday School classes, Boy Scouts meetings and other youth activities. As Bedford experienced continued growth, St. Luke s welcomed many new members. Jackman road traffic also continued to grow, and it became very desirable to have all St. Luke s services and classes on the same side of the road, thus avoiding the need for children to be crossing a busy street to attend Sunday School. In 1992, the congregation undertook another building project to accomplish this goal. A campaign entitled Giving the Gospel Room to Grow was undertaken to fund this project. The congregation gave strong support and in 1993 the renovated and expanded facility was dedicated. Over the next 16 years, the Building Fund received steady support, and in December of 2009, the loan was totally paid off. Over 75 years of life, God has blessed St. Luke s with many opportunities for mission and ministry which are not recounted in this brief history of building and expansion. But these record in a visible way the faithful people of God who have shared in worship, study, fellowship, witness and service in this place. That story would take many pages to tell. But their work is also visible in the ministries and programs that are provided today as St. Luke s seeks to live out its purpose to Proclaim the grace of God in thought, word and deed and live into its identity as a Fellowship of Disciples and a Community of Ministers. It is to that story we now turn. The core of the congregation of St. Luke s is its worship life. The worship styles are significantly different by design, intending to reach different audiences and provide for meaningful worship in both traditional and contemporary form. In order to facilitate the new service aimed at families with school-aged children, staffing was expanded in 2008 to include a part time pastor, worship leader and worship band. For the traditional worship services, an adult choir continues to provide musical leadership and inspiration and a new Director of Choirs joined the staff in This will continue to be a central focus of the congregation as the Word and Sacraments of God s grace continue to shape, inspire and motivate its life and ministry. According to its Mission Statement, St. Luke s mission is To worship, learn and grow together in the knowledge of God and his Word. We are then sent into the world to share God s love, teach his Word and serve those in need. In order to fulfill this mission, St. Luke s offers educational opportunities for young and old alike. The Children s Sunday School meets each week to learn about God and how God wants each child to know how he loves them and wants them to reach out to love others and share God s story with them. After an opening celebration in the gym, the children meet in age-appropriate classes. After their classes, they join their parents, adults and other youth in the contemporary service to share songs, skits, arts or just their enthusiasm for the Lord. An Adult Bible study class meets each Sunday morning.

GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.4 An active confirmation program is provided for 7 th 9 th graders called Head to the Heart confirmation. Here, young people learn about the Bible and the basics of Christian faith as lifted up in Martin Luther s Small Catechism. Activities range from energetic games to small group sharing to quiet meditative prayer and reflection. In the summer of 2009, a part time Facilitator of Youth and Family ministry was added to St. Luke s staff. Youth activities include Bible study, service projects, attending youth gatherings, playing games and enjoying the unique opportunities of each season of the year. The vision of the Youth Ministry Team is to make this ministry more broadly focused not only on youth, but on their entire family and their family of faith as the congregation encourages and celebrates the unique gifts of each young person and seeks to give strong support to each family. This position has now been incorporated into the role of a second pastor who will be joining the staff this July. St. Luke s is also the sponsoring organization for Play-and-Learn Pre-School. This partnership goes back 20 years, serving almost 70 families and their preschoolers aged 3 to 5 each year. This has become one of the best known and well-respected pre-schools in Bedford and each year the classes fill up quickly after registration is opened. We ask no rent or utility compensation so that the resources of the school can be directed to benefit the children first and foremost. Several families have joined St. Luke s as a result of having had children attend Play-and-Learn. St. Luke s reaches out to the community of Bedford and its surrounding area in many ways. The Social Concerns Ministry Team leads the congregation to collect food for a food pantry, angel tree gifts and food baskets around the holidays, coat collection during the winter, supporting the God Works meal program that offers free meals to anyone in the community who wants one every Monday. Some of the special offerings of the congregation are designated for world hunger programs each year. The church is a polling place for the community on election days and hosts many community groups who come for craft shows, work days, athletic events, A.A./Al Anon or family gatherings. As a 75 th Anniversary project, the congregation will become a sponsoring organization for a Habitat for Humanity build this fall. The St. Luke s Endowment Fund received requests for many community projects and has supported many of them; helping with Y Family scholarships, seniors citizen and parks projects as well as providing seed money for developing ministries in the congregation. St. Luke s also hosts events to which the entire community is invited. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra comes each December to provide a Neighborhood Holiday Concert. The congregation has hosted the Liberty Corners Festival each September and invites all the community to celebrate our neighborhood. This will continue with an anniversary edition scheduled for September 13, 2015.

GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.5 In 2008, the congregation purchased an electronic message board to let the community know what was planned and invite them to take part. This has been a great blessing in the out-reach ministry of the congregation and many community members have commented on the helpfulness of the information displayed there. It would be almost impossible to estimate how many lives have been touched by God s grace over the last 75 years of St. Luke s existence. Hundreds of people have been instructed in the Bible and the Christian faith, ranging from pre-school to senior citizens. Thousands have come through our doors to worship God and be touched by a loving fellowship of believers. Many hundreds of people have celebrated baptisms, confirmations, or weddings, and thousands have been comforted by God s promises at funeral services St. Luke s has provided. How many hundreds have been wrapped in a comforter sewn here or received food or clothes collected here? How many people have been encouraged in their faith walk by the witness of a St. Luke s member they encounter along the path of life? We cannot know all these numbers, but we can know that God has richly blessed St. Luke s and greatly honored this family of faith to be part of his kingdom work in this place. For grace so abounding and amazing, we join to give thanks and praise to God! But looking back is only half of this 75 th anniversary celebration. St. Luke s is now called to look to the future to which God is calling her. What will the next 75 years hold in store? How will God use this congregation and the gifts he has provided in her members? How will you be a part of this essential work of God in this place and time? There is no doubt that the community of Bedford needs the presence and ministry of St. Luke s Lutheran Church. The message of God s grace is too important to fall silent or be defeated by the challenging times in which we live. God calls this congregation to rise to the new challenges which lie ahead just as previous generations of St. Luke s members did in their day and time. It is because of their faithfulness that St. Luke s has 75 years of life to celebrate. The celebrations of future years will only be possible if today s St. Luke s members commit themselves to the work of God s kingdom and give their strong support by participating in her life of worship, study, fellowship, witness and service, and accompany their participation with faithful and generous sharing of the resources God has placed in their hands. We can expect that St. Luke s will continue to build a dynamic and caring Christian community, centered in worship and founded in God s Word. The variety of worship offerings and educational opportunities attest to that. The congregation will continue to reach out to the community helping people in need in many and various ways. St. Luke s will continue to invite and welcome those who do not currently have a church home to join this body of believers and strive to welcome them warmly. How many people within a short drive of St. Luke s are just waiting for an invitation? How many people who are within the four square mile area of Liberty Corners have needs that could be addressed by St. Luke s, if only they knew what would await them here?

GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.6 How will they find their way here? What will they find here that will touch them and bring them closer to the God who loves them dearly and desires to walk closely with them? As Jesus told his disciples as he walked through the rich fields of Galilee with them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray to the Lord to send laborers to gather the harvest. St. Luke s Lutheran Church may you continue to Grow in Grace for at least another 75 years!! And to God be the glory!! With much love your partner in the Gospel of Grace,

GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.8 BIBLE STUDY OPPORTUNITY FOR JUNE 2015 "This summer, we are reading a marvelous booklet A Study of Luther s Small Catechism for Adults. If you would like a copy, please call the church office. Cost is $7 This small booklet reads like a devotional. You might only read and pray a couple pages at a time. Why do we need a catechism? God knows that the Christian faith is not easy for us. God knows how we need assistance to live as Christ lived. So He provides us the tools to help us. The catechism is your CHRISTIAN TOOL BOX. God guides and helps you with these tools: Ten Commandments Apostles Creed Lord's Prayer Baptism & Lord s Supper Forgiveness & Christian Fellowship. Tools are important. A carpenter does not build a house without tools of the trade nor does a mechanic repair a car without the tools of the trade. A cook does not prepare a dinner without the tools of the kitchen. How well do you know the tools of faith God gives you? Join us for discussion on Sundays Mornings at 9:45 Adult Study, or read on your own! THANK YOU!!!!!! A HUGE thank you to Pastor Frank, making a very timely phone call and many thanks to all who sent cards of get well wishes and words of Encouragement. My planned knee replacement surgery has had some ups and downs. But I am getting there! To those who donated casseroles and home made soups and treats, again a huge THANK YOU! I have a wonderful church Family!! Many Thanks, Judy Schreiber HAPPY TO BE PART OF ST. LUKE S OFFICE!! 9 GROWING IN GRACE JUNE 2015 THE TOWER PG.9 HEALTH MINISTRY NEWS HANDS ONLY CPR Hands only CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a life-saving technique involving no mouth to mouth contact or breathing. When someone collapses it is usually a cardiac arrest caused from an abnormal heart rhythm. This causes limited to no blood flow to the heart and brain and the chance of survival is nearly zero unless someone takes action. The American Heart Association feels the hands-only technique is much simpler and can overcome panic outside a medical setting, often tripling the chance of survival. It is done on victims over 8 years of age, teens and adults. If you witness someone who has collapsed, call 911 or have a by-stander call. Be very specific on your location and do not hang up until you are told. If the victim is unconscious and has no pulse, remove the upper clothing until you can reach the bare chest. Make sure the victim is on a hard surface, immediately begin chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the middle of the chest at the rate of about 100 per minute. Use the heel of one hand with the other hand directly on top. This is hard work so have someone take over for you not stopping until the emergency response team arrives. The only time you stop compressions is when you use the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) applied to the victim. We have one available at our church which has simple directions to follow. Breaths are still given to infants and children who may be unconscious due to a respiratory abnormality, an accident, drowning or drug overdose. It is advisable that you take a CPR course to learn the proper technique. The sequence of 30 compressions to 2 breaths is still taught. The AHA feels this simple hands only technique with the hope to save more lives. Any attempt of CPR is better than no CPR. Have a safe summer, Judy Diener, R.N.
