1 Augustana Voice JULY Augustana Lutheran Church Genoa Nebraska From the desk of Pastor Josh: Lutherans, Catholics celebrate 50 years of dialogue CHICAGO (ELCA) Lutherans and Catholics in the United States have been in dialogue for the past 50 years. A Service of Thanksgiving and Prayer to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the dialogue will take place May 27 in the chapel of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Center in Washington, D.C. Lutheran and Catholic leaders will then gather for this sixth meeting of Round XII of the U.S. Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue on the topic of "Faithful Teaching." "Fifty years ago, many of us were still stuck in in old polemics lobbed at each other. But thanks to the efforts of the late James R. Crumley, presiding bishop of the former Lutheran Church in America, and Pope St. John Paul II, who reached out to each other in the early 1980s, and thanks to the work of the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogues, we have moved ever closer to each other. And these are not facile, lowest common denominator agreements, but consensus formed through the clear presentation of each of our understandings of who we are and out of deep respect for each other. Thanks be to God," said Eaton. In 1999 the Lutheran World Federation and the Vatican signed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification, laying aside 16th century condemnations, agreeing that we are justified in the eyes of God by the grace of Christ through faith. The purpose of the U.S. Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue Round XII is to examine the ministries of teaching within the Catholic and Lutheran churches through: study of official statements and documents, as well as the findings of previous dialogues regarding the respective practices of the churches for such ministries, exploration of the sources, structures and patterns for discerning the truth coming to us in God's word and communicating this truth in normative teaching for today, and assessment of the dialogue's conclusions regarding the ministries of teaching for long-term ecumenical relationships. In the past 50 years, topics for dialogue have included the status of the Nicene Creed, baptism, the Eucharist, papal primacy and the universal church, the saints and Mary, salvation and hope. These talks have been growing in frequency as we near the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Pastor Josh

3 Page 3 Small Catechism Study Begins August 18 th With the series on the holy Trinity finished, regular Bible studies will be on hiatus until Tuesday August 18 th at 8:30 AM. Many people at Augustana's Bible studies have requested to review Martin Luther's Small Catechism, and so we will do just that. Luther wrote his Small Catechism for the everyday lives of Christians. Our focus for this particular series will be Luther's explanations of the Ten Commandments and the Apostles Creed. Whether you're new to the Lutheran church or have been a part of it for decades, you are certainly welcome to join us! Youth Bible Eating and Ice Cream Reading This month the Augustana youth gathered to learn more about how the Bible is God's story, and also to share stories over home made ice cream. Here are a few pictures of the action as Andrew Nelson, Nina Parry and Courtney Nelson prepare the ice cream mixture under the supervision of Ryan Clausen! Augustana GIFT Night #1 The Park Games, July 22 at Soon it will be time for Augustana's first ever GIFT night! Children and adults of all ages are invited to bring a side dish for a potluck supper (hamburgers & hotdogs provided, please contribute a side dish), share a Bible lesson, and to join in the park games (the egg relay, tug-o-war, and more). The next GIFT night will be a campfire and hay rack ride on August 12. We look forward to Growing In Faith Together! Introducing the Semi-Continuous Series This summer, we will be using a set from our lectionary (Bible readings rubric) called the semi-continuous series. During the first readings in worship, the series will walk us through a number of stories in the Bible, starting with the story of King. David throughout the first readings during worship.

4 Page 4 Financial Summary To meet the approved 2015 budgeted needs, we need an average of $2,118 each week. So far this year, June has been the first month we have meet this goal. January: $4, February: $5, March: $8, April: $8, May: $7, Building Fund: $ Memorial Fund: $10 in memory of Lynne Peterson Accessibility Fund: $300 $25 in memory of Tom Gray from Anita Johnson During the summer of 2014, the parsonage and garage sustained some hail damage to the shingles along with some damage to the siding on the north side of the parsonage. The council hired BAC General Contracting of Grand Island to put new shingles on the parsonage and the garage. The work was competed the first week of July. Sack Lumber will be replacing the damaged siding in the coming weeks. They will also be upgrading the insulation on the north side and installing an exhaust fan in the upstairs bathroom while the siding is off. All of these expenses are covered by the insurance payment for the hail damage.

5 Page 5 AugustanaAugustana-Faith Through the Ages Past, present and future that was the theme of this year s Pawnee Days celebration! Augustana Church entered a float in the parade embracing that theme titled: Faith Through the Ages We appreciate all the time and effort Darlene Whitlow put into organizing the church float and to those who helped put it all together: Dave & Deb Rippke, John & Elta Rice, Dave & Jane Baxa and Pastor & Rachel Feala. We also thank those who rode on the float symbolizing the past, present and future of Augustana Church: John & Katelyn Fritzges and their son Kohen, John & Elta Rice and Noah Ziegler (Darlene s grandson) who depicted a union soldier. Brad & Cindy Cromwell pulled the float with their jeep and their daughter Elle helped Pastor toss out candy along the parade route.

6 Church Council Minutes of June 28th Meeting. (Rescheduled from June 17) Meeting called to order by President Ike Anderson. Also present included: Brad C., Ryan C., Jack J., Gary J., Dana P., Angie S., Darlene W., and Pastor Josh Pastor led opening devotion on 2nd Corinthians 8:7-15. His abbreviated report included reminders of vacation time July 3-9 (Lori Clausen will be leading worship on July 5) and August Treasurers report was available for review and approved by Gary J. with a second from Ryan C.. Discussion was held on ways to keep congregation updated on financial needs of the congregation. It was also suggested to begin financial budget planning earlier in the year and explore ways to fund our ministry. NEW BUSINESS: There was some discussion on clarification of payment to Rachel Feala for the time she covered in the office for the church secretary. After review of the minutes, payment remained as stated of $100 a week for 10 hours of work for the month dating April 15 to May 15. Pastor reported Rachel is getting close to finishing the church website. The youth have had 2 events during the summer, one in May at the home of Darren & Stacy Nelson and one in June at John & Susan Nelson s home. Discussion was held of other possible events including tanking or an after hours pool party with snacks provided. No action was taken. OLD BUSINESS: Bids were reviewed for hail damage to roof of parsonage & garage. It was moved by Ryan C. and seconded by Dana P. to hire BAC General Contracting out of Grand Island to replace the shingles. There is also some damage to siding on the north side of the parsonage. Sack Lumber will be hired to replace the siding on the north side. While the siding is removed they will also upgrade the insulation and put vent an exhaust fan from the upstairs bathroom. The cost of these repairs will be covered by insurance money received on the hail claims. Discussion of possible parsonage energy efficiency improvements from Pioneer Energy was tabled until July. Motion was made by Darlene W. with second by Angie S. to adjourn the meeting. Next meeting will be held on July 15 at 7:30 p.m. Meeting closed with the Lord s Prayer. Ryan Clausen, acting secretary The church has been blessed with many volunteers who willingly give of their time and their talents! We want to thank those who have volunteered to mow the church property this summer, including Jay Hagerbaumer, Gary Juracek, Dave Baxa and Ryan Clausen who have already taken a turn or two. While we have volunteers for August and part of September lined up, we still need volunteers for the rest of July! If you can help out, please let the church office know or sign up in the Gathering Room!
