2 ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE TOWER 2 Dear friends in Christ, This year s liturgical calendar is pretty unique in that Ash Wednesday falls on Valentines Day and Easter falls on April 1 otherwise known as April Fools day. So, it s been fun and interesting planning for these services and this season. Our theme for our Sunday Lent services will be Surprise Me, God. This theme idea comes from the book: Surprise Me: A 30-Day Faith Experiment by Terry Esau. This book is based on his question: What if every day, for thirty days, I pray and ask God to surprise me? Surprise Me, God. Nothing more, nothing less. Three words. Not asking for something in particular. Not giving him my list. Not presenting my agenda. Just inviting him to barge into my life in any old way he pleases to crash into the busyness of my schedule and mess with it. Then, what if every day I record my thoughts and activities I ll look for when, where and how God steps into my world in a practical, everyman sort of way. (Esau p. 12). I fell in love with this idea for Lent because it is a season that we are asking to be surprised. We ask God on Ash Wednesday to change our hearts and to really see the world through God s eyes. What if we ask, in addition to that, just for God to surprise us? What if our prayer for each of the 40 days of Lent was surprise me, God and then we intentionally journaled each day what happened, looking for the presence of God? What might we find? How might we see our hearts changing in response to our search for the God of surprises? Therefore, each Sunday in Lent we will be looking at a Scripture that is surprising, that offers us the opposite of what we may have expected. We will also be providing, to each person who would like one, a 40 day journal to record your thoughts and experiences as we challenge you to pray each day: Surprise me, God. There will be a Facebook group for anyone who would like to join to share any surprises that God may offer you during this season of Lent. If you re not on Facebook, please share any surprises you encounter with me or submit to the church office. At the end of the season, I d like to put together something that shares some of the surprises that God gave us during this season. For our midweek services, we will again use Holden Evening Prayer and our H2H confirmands will be assisting with worship leadership. In keeping with the theme Surprise me, God our service theme will be Surprising Women of Scripture. Each week we will hear about another woman in Scripture who had a surprising story, or who we may not have heard their story before. Midweek services will begin at 7:00 pm and all are welcome. We hope you will invite friends to join us! The schedule for our midweek surprising women is below along with Scripture passages if you d like to read their stories ahead of time. February 21 Sarai / Sarah Genesis 17, Genesis 18:1-15 February 28 Deborah Judges 4-5 March 7 Abigail 1 Samuel 24 March 14 the Syrophoenician Woman- Mark 7:24-30 March 21 Mary & Martha Luke 10:38-42 Praying that you have a blessed and heart-changing, surprising Lent! God s blessings!

3 ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE TOWER 3 ORIENTATION SHINDIG New to St. Luke s? Have you been attending for a while but haven t joined or transferred your membership? Are you just interested in hearing more about St. Luke s? Join Pastor Robyn for an orientation shindig on Sunday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m. in the Leippein room to learn more about St. Luke s, our history, our present, our hopeful future, ways you can connect and be involved with us, meet some of our congregational leaders and hear more about becoming members if you desire. Pizza, snacks, and drinks will be provided. Please sign-up in the narthex or by contacting Pastor Robyn or the office by Wednesday, February 7. LENT MIDWEEK OFFERINGS This year our midweek offerings will be divided between three causes. Worship life wanted to choose three different agencies that would have impact on local, semi-local, and global needs. The first is Toledo Streets Newspapers. They are a local 501c3 who focus on economic empowerment through micro-enterprise. They are a street newspaper sold on public property by men and women in poverty situations, like homelessness. They provide them with a product to sell, job training, skills development, enrichment and educational opportunities, and networking for further growth. You can read more about them at toledostreets.org. The second is Samaritas (formerly Lutheran Social Services of Michigan). This is a semi-local agency in Southeast Michigan that has social service programs in a variety of areas. Our council has adopted them as their outreach project for this year and will be encouraging the congregation to support Samaritas as well in different ways in the near future. You can learn more about them at samaritas.org. The third is Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) which provides relief globally. We know that natural disasters that have occurred in the last year are still in the process of being cleaned up and we would like to continue to support these efforts through an agency that sends 100% of funds donated to the affected areas because LDR remains in areas helping long after most other agencies have moved on to the next disaster. You can learn more about them at -Response. NEW MEMBER RECEPTION We will be receiving new members by affirmation of baptism at all three services on Sunday, February 18. If you are interested in joining St. Luke s please let Pastor Robyn know. FIERCE WOMEN S BIBLE STUDY Our daytime class will meet on: February 1 and February 15 at 1:00 pm. Our evening class will meet on February 1 at Heather Manore s home. We will have a fellowship time on February 15 for a game and wine at Mary Lingle s home. There will be a joint time of fellowship for the two groups in February (date/location TBD) where we will make up stir up edible devotions. LENT COIN FOLDERS Our Lenten giving focus this year will be on the coin folders which will be placed in your mail box in the hall. Please fill these as noted or with gift checks. This money will go to the ELCA World Hunger Campaign. We are reminded by giving up on an order from Starbucks, McDonald s, etc., we could provide food for a hungry family. What might seem like a small sacrifice to us can make a huge difference to them. By working together with others we can do so much more! Thank you, in advance, for your contributions to this cause. LYO Sunday, February 4 we will make sub sandwiches for the Moana viewing event. Sunday, February 11 we will meet at 4:00 p.m. at church Saturday, February 17 we will help with a fundraiser for a member. Sunday, February 18 we will meet at 4:00 p.m. at church. Sunday, February 25 will be a fun event. More info to come. H2H We are helping with midweek services. Please arrive by 6:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and your commitment will be done at the end of service each Wednesday, around 7:45 pm.

6 ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE TOWER 6 ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE NEWS Through gifts from the congregation though-out the year, the St. Luke s Endowment Fund Trustees are blessed to be able to offer grants for projects done in the community that reflect St. Luke s mission. These grant applications are reviewed and granted based on guide lines set in the Funds bylaws. Some years we have been able to honor all grants received and other years we have not. These grant applications must have a sponsoring person from St. Luke s listed on the application. A grant cannot be accepted for an item already in the church s budget for the year. And finally the applications must be received by the due date of March 31, So if you know of a need in the community please pick up an application in the office. The Endowment Fund also offers scholarships for St. Luke s members attending college. Each year a total of 4 scholarships are granted. These are renewable for four years as explained on the application. The applications are blindly reviewed; names removed before committee receives them, to make it a fair process. These applications are also available in the office with deadline to submit being May15, We look forward to the congregations participation in this process. 7 ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE TOWER 7 Greetings, February, 2018 News "What You Need to Know About Leaky Gut and Diet". This title intrigued me so I thought I'd share it with you from the Environmental Nutrition Newsletter. Leaky gut is a layman's term to describe, hyper-intestinal permeability, a condition in which the intestines allows that which should remain there to interface with the bloodstream and other organs. The "leaking" offenders include food particles that cause immune reactions as well as microbes and potentially toxic chemicals they produce. Leaky gut involves inflammation and/or impaired gut function. Normally the gut has a healthy barrier, a mucus layer acting like doorways that allow nutrients from food to be transported out of the gut to the blood stream. Antibiotics, stress, infections, and poor diet can lead to a breakdown of the barrier. Alterations in the intestinal bacteria and zonulin (a protein that regulates permeability) may be the main factors behind this disorder. Disease that may result from a leaky gut include inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, and type I diabetes. The Western diet (a high fat, high sugar, and low fiber diet) and excessive alcohol intake are linked with leaky gut. A high fat diet may impair mucus production and decrease expression of the tight junction proteins, contributing to greater intestinal permeability. Poor nutrient intake, particularly low levels of iron and vitamin A and D, may increase likelihood of leaky gut. Intense exercise, especially when dehydrated, may impair the gut barrier. As yet, this condition is not fully understood and will continue to be researched by scientists. Several factors were mentioned to enhance gut health. Eat a variety of fiber rich food such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables to protect the mucus layer. Drink alcohol responsibly no more than one drink a day for women and two for men. Consume vitamin D--rich foods to protect against gut permeability-tuna, sardines, fortified milk, beef liver, and egg yolks Eat vitamin A-rich foods like kale, carrots and spinach to protect gut integrity Include iron-rich foods like chicken, beef, lentils, tofu Consider probiotics which may help reverse leaky gut by promoting tight junctions between proteins, though additional studies are still needed. Reduce stress. Try deep breathing, meditation, and adequate sleep to improve gut microbial balance. Exercise moderately. Intense, endurance exercise such as running in intense heat, is associated with greater gut permeability. Since abdominal bloating and other digestive problems are so prevalent, these ideas may be helpful for you or someone you know. Parish Nurse, Darlene Cook RN HEALTH MINISTRY PLEASE WASH YOUR HANDS! With the increase in flu cases this season, one of the worst in recent history, we want to remind you that washing your hands is a terrific way to stay healthy and to stop spreading harmful viruses. Please wash your hands! WATCH YOUR STEP Winter leaves us vulnerable many times with the cold and the slippery ground. Slip and falls are common this time of year. Take your time, watch your step. The hazards of slipping can be great. Take care of yourself!

9 ST. LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH THE TOWER 9 FUNDRAISING EVENT A spaghetti fundraiser to help offset the cost of a medical procedure for Laura Bourn will be held on February 17 at St. Luke s. If you are able to help with this fundraiser, it would be greatly appreciated. We could use help setting up, cooking, and serving. Dessert donations would be deeply appreciated as well. If you are able to help please contact Laura Bourn or Pastor Robyn. Thank you. ABOUT THE PROCEDURE Here is the description for stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis in the knees: The doctor will remove some of my own stem cells and fat cells. They will be incorporated together and injected into my knee so that rebuilding process can begin. Stem cell therapy has been demonstrated to induce profound healing activity in animals with various forms of arthritis. For example, the company Vet-Stem routinely utilizes stem cells in horses with various joint deformities to accelerate healing. Besides healing of damaged tissues, stem cells have the unique ability to modulate the immune system so as to shut off pathological responses while preserving ability to fight off disease. Doctors are also finding healing activity in humans using the same procedures. Laura Bourn
