St Luke s Lutheran Church and guests are invited to the dedication ceremony and concert presented by Neil Weston on April 19, 2015 at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary of St Luke s Lutheran Church, 1690 W Sterns Rd., Temperance, MI. Please come and enjoy the wonderful sound of the Rogers Infinity 361 organ that was recently installed. All are welcome. A light snack will be served after the concert. A graduate of the University of London and the Royal Academy of Music, with advanced performance diplomas from the Royal College of Music and the Royal College of Organists, Neil Weston was appointed to his first cathedral organist position in England at the age of 17. In this role he played regularly on BBC Radio and Television, as well as giving solo recitals throughout the United Kingdom and in Europe. He emigrated to the United States in 2000 and has performed in several of the nation's most prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, Washington National Cathedral, and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. A past prize winner of the American Guild of Organists National Competition in Organ Improvisation, he was presented by the AGO in concert as an improviser at the National Cathedral on three occasions. Having served churches on both sides of the Atlantic, and formerly a member of the music faculty at George Washington University, Neil now works full time for the Rodgers Organ Company as District Manager for the Midwest, working closely with Rodgers representatives across thirteen states, helping an ever-growing number of churches acquire new organs and lift their musical horizons. OUR MISSION To worship, learn and grow together in the knowledge of God and his Word. We are then sent into the world to share God s love, teach His Word, and serve those in need.

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG.2 DEAR PARTNERS, I was struck by the sentiments of 18 th century essayist, satirist and cleric Jonathan Swift (whose Gulliver s Travels many of us read in school) when he was quoted in an editorial by John Buchanan in The Christian Century as writing; We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another. There have been many expressions of that dynamic of religion in recent years. Whether the brutality of Islamic extremists like ISIS in Iraq, the hatred based on religious descent among Jews and Arabs, or the crazy antics of Christian extremists like Westboro Baptist Church or the Ku Klux Klan. No religious group of which I am aware has escaped the development of hatred by some who espouse the tenants of their religion and become twisted enough to believe their holy task is to exterminate all those who do not stand with them. It is easy to condemn such extremism, whether aimed by others in our direction or aimed at them from others who claim our faith but do not represent us in their extremist hatred. But in these days of Lent and Holy Week, we must consider the basic tendency of all humanity to bend our religion to suit our own prejudices and reject those with whom we differ. As Swift s quote above implies, true religion does not express itself in hatred, but in love. Witness the behavior of Jesus during the days of his passion. He could have responded with hatred toward those who were plotting to do him in. Ironically, in the days before his arrest, he told a parable in the Temple courts about a vineyard owner who sent his servants to collect the share of the crop due to him only to have them beaten, abused and killed because the tenants wanted to keep all the profit for themselves. So the owner sends his son believing the tenants will respect him and pay the rent. Instead, they kill him hoping to claim the vineyards as their own now that the heir is no more. Jesus asks his listeners (the Jewish authorities plotting against him) what the owner might do to those wicked tenants. Of course, they would expect him to come and destroy them, put them to a miserable death and give the vineyard to others. (Read the story in Mark 12:1-12) But almost immediately after this parable, Jesus is arrested and crucified by those who rejected his claims. Instead of responding with hatred, the story takes a major twist. Here we see Jesus could have chosen hatred, as the average person might do. Instead, he offered himself sacrificially for those very people who crucified him. Love was God s response. Any expression of religion that fosters hate rather than love has missed the point! Let us monitor the emotions with which we regard others, particularly those we find hard to love. Our faith is not true to our Lord if we find ourselves trending toward hate rather than love. May the Lord keep us from such misunderstandings and distortions!! With much love your partner in the Gospel of Grace,

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG.3 HOLY WEEK AT ST. LUKE S MAUNDY THURSDAY April 2, :00 pm On this evening, we remember the night in which he was betrayed. As Jesus shared a Passover meal with his disciples, he washed their feet and gave them a new commandment, that they love one another as I have loved you. And from the table, taking bread and wine, he gave them the gift of Holy Communion. We will join in receiving his body and blood, doing this in remembrance of him. The service ends with the stripping of the altar as we recall Jesus arrest in the garden. GOOD FRIDAY April 3, :00 pm A traditional meditation practice will shape our reflections on this evening as we follow Jesus on the Via Dolorosa the way of sorrows as we contemplate The Way of the Cross. We will be focusing the profound love that brought Jesus to offer his life for our salvation. We will be led in reflection and prayer. Seven candles will be extinguished as the service of Tenebrae (darkness) leads to the exit of the Christ candle and a period of total darkness as we experience the slamming of the tomb and leave in silence, reminded to return to this place before dawn on the first day of the week. EASTER SUNRISE April 5, :30 am Gathering in pre-dawn darkness, we recall the journey to the tomb of the faithful women who followed Jesus and came on that first day of the week to complete his burial. Their discovery of the empty tomb gave them both hope and fear until they were greeted by the risen Christ. As darkness turns to daybreak, we celebrate the darkness of sin and death giving way to the light of Jesus victory over the grave. Following the Sunrise Easter Service, we will join in an Easter Breakfast. We hope you will stay and celebrate with us. FESTIVE HOLY COMMUNION April 5, :30 & 11:15 am After breakfast, we will continue our celebration of our Lord s Resurrection around the Feast of Victory at Holy Communion. Different lessons, hymns, anthems and sermon will give us opportunity to come to more than one Easter celebration today! Invite your friends and neighbors who might not have a place to celebrate this most amazing news. Christ is risen!! He is risen indeed!! GIG EASTER CELEBRATION April 5, :00 am The joyous sounds of contemporary praise will fill the sanctuary as we join to celebrate our Risen Lord in joyous and upbeat praise!! Lift your voice and give praise to our God of power and love!! Please join us and invite your family and friends!!

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG. 5 Call Committee Update 3/18/15 On March 1 st through March 3 rd, your call committee held an on-site interview with its third Pastoral candidate. The interview went very well, and the call committee unanimously agreed that this candidate was the one we d like to recommend to the Council and Congregation for filling the call vacancy here at St. Luke s. We have communicated our intent to the candidate in order that she might give prayerful consideration to the call potential here. This candidate s husband is also a Pastor who is likewise available for call. He will be interviewing in the greater Toledo area at the end of this month. The call committee has agreed to give this candidate and her husband a chance to see how the husband s interview goes before asking for an answer about the call here at St. Luke s. If this candidate expresses a desire to continue in the process with us, the next step will be to finalize a compensation package, provide a chance for the congregation to meet the candidate, and then to call for a congregational meeting to vote on a call for the candidate. If this candidate should not wish to continue the process with us, the call committee will request additional candidates for consideration from the Synod. Please pray that the Holy Spirit might guide the decision making for vacancy here at St. Luke s, and that He might grant wisdom and discernment to the call committee in their deliberations. VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! TRADE FAIR 2015 Thanks to all who spent some time in our booth at the Bedford Trade Fair sharing our ministries here. Those who Special thanks to Erin Beard for organizing, designing, and working in the booth. serve: In January, over 1,000 loose floor tiles were replaced in the north half of the Koinonia Center. There remains about the same number of loose tiles in the south half of the floor. To that end, the Koinonia Center will be closed starting Tuesday, April 7, through Friday April 10 for tile replacement. Volunteers are needed all four days (and evenings) if this project is to be completed. A sign-up sheet is available on the table in the narthex. This is a great opportunity for members to help the Church on a short term basis, and to learn some valuable skills that might be used in maintaining your own home. If you ve never done this kind of work before, it s a great opportunity to learn from folks who have experience.

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG. 6 PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY Greetings, April, 2015 The information for this article was taken from Mayo Clinic Health Letter dated March Because well over half of adults older than 65 and close to 80% of those older than 75 have high blood pressure, I thought the revised guidelines published in 2014 would be of interest to many of you. The short version of what is blood pressure in a nutshell. A certain amount of pressure is required to keep the blood flowing through the body. Working together several organs and body chemicals help control the pressure and keep it from rising or falling too much. They include your heart, arteries and kidneys, and other factors such as the central nervous system and various hormones and enzymes, a complex system. When increased pressure in your arteries continues on a persistent basis, your doctor may diagnose you as having hypertension. For some this develops over time without an exact cause. For other folks, an underlying condition causes hypertension such as kidney or thyroid disease or some drugs treating other conditions. The blood pressure reading consists of two numbers. The top number is the pressure the heart exerts on the artery when pushing the blood out. The second number is the amount of pressure left in the artery between beats. The goal of treatment is to keep the pressure in the rage that will prevent damage to your arteries and your kidneys and brain. Normal blood pressure is considered to be less than 120/80mmHg. The most recent guidelines were published in 2014 after a National Committee focused on this topic. The guidelines revised previous ones in three key ways. If you have high blood pressure they advised keeping your pressure lower than: 150/90mmHg if you are a healthy adult 60 or over 140/90mmHg if you are a healthy adult younger than /90mmHg if you have diabetes or kidney disease Less aggressive goals reduce the intensity of treatment, which also makes for fewer side effects. Interesting? Parish Nurse, Darlene Cook RN SUNDAY SCHOOL SCAVENGER HUNT April 26, 2015 from 4:00 pm 6:30 pm The Sunday School children are invited to participate in a photo scavenger hunt followed by a pizza dinner. The children will be teamed up and have a chance to hunt through the church photographing objects and themselves according to a provided scavenger list. A great way for the children to have fun with their Sunday School friends and become better acquainted with the church s details. Following the hunt the pictures taken will be displayed while dining on pizza. Please RSVP to Abby Holmblad at or abby.holmblad@yahoo.com. Parent volunteers with cameras are needed.

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG. 7 IT S SPRING AND ADOPT-A-ROAD SEASON BEGINS AGAIN We will continue this service project to benefit our Bedford community as we pick-up the litter along Stern Road between Lewis and Douglas. The dates for this year s pick-up days (set by the state) will be: April 18 July 18 October 3 On each of these days we will gather at the church at 9:00 am. After dividing up into 4 teams, we head out with pink bags to leave along the roadside once they have been filled. With 12 to 14 people, we can usually finish the job in 60 to 90 minutes. Please keep an eye out for a sign-up sheet in the narthex as these dates approach. Thanks! LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB had their March meeting at Red Star Diner in Temperance. Excellent food and service! Their Charity cause this month is Now I Lay Me Down free bed distribution that is run by First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. The ladies sponsored 2 of the Lenten dinners in addition to giving their own funds to give a child a bed. After the 3 collections, $ was raised. It was decided to continue this charity one more month and see if we can reach the TWO -BED level. Our next meeting will be on April 8th at noon at West Park Place on Execultive Pkw. In Toledo. The speaker that day will talk about Teapots and collecting them and will share her collection. The lunch will be $3.00. Please let Siggi Deckman know if you are coming so she can reserve our spots Car pooling will be available, please let Siggi know.

GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 Pg 8 Pave the Way Completed Well done you good and faithful stewards! In December of 2012 we first met with architects from the Poggemeyer group to plan for rebuilding our church s parking lots. Now, less than two and a half years later, the project has not only been completed, but fully paid for as well. The total cost of the job was $127,914. Of that amount, $98,102 was donated through your generous support during the of life of the project, and the remaining $29,l812 was borrowed from the Pastor s Housing Fund on September 1, Our goal during the pledge drive campaign was to repay the Pastor s Housing Fund within three years. I am happy to report that thanks to your faithful support of this project, the final payment was made to the Pastor s Housing Fund at the end of February. As we approached the end of this project, many of you rededicated your outstanding pledge amount to include support for the purchase of our new organ. If you did so, I commend you to continue with your pledge to its completion. Those of you who did not rededicate your pledge now have three options: First, you can still rededicate your pledge to some other project, like the Organ Fund, the Facility Improvement Fund, or any of the other Special Project or Memorial Funds that you might like to support. Second, you can continue to make your pledge to the Parking Lot Fund where the money will be held to help pay for resealing and re-striping, and /or for future repair costs. Third, since your pledge was for the reconstruction of the parking lot (now completed,) you can simply discontinue your pledge. Again, I commend all of you who have so faithfully supported this project through your pledge. 9 GROWING IN GRACE THE TOWER APRIL 2015 PG. 9 Boiler Repair Project In February we discovered that the 13 year old Burnham boiler which provides heat for the two bathrooms, the nursery, coffee hour narthex area, the old Pastor s Office, the sacristy, the front narthex and the adjoining hallways, was leaking water from a cracked at exchanger. An inspection was made of the boiler and it was determined that we get quotes for its replacement or repair We were able to get three bids for the boilers replacement and two bids for its repair. Due to the generally good condition of this boiler, and the fact that any replacement would include significant costs for code update requirements, it was determined that the best course of action was to repair the boiler by replacing the cracked heat exchanger. At the last council meeting the proposal from Cross Heating and Cooling, Inc. to replace the sections of cast iron heat exchanger that have failed, install a boiler bypass and a low water cut-out safety switch at the quoted cost of $5, was approved. Money for the repair will be taken from the Facility Improvement Fund. It should be noted that the Church has 6 Heating and Air conditioning units on our roof that handle the Koinonia Center, Leppien room and the Office area, which were all installed some 19 years ago as part of the last building project. Additionally, there are two large units outside of the Leppien entrance that handle the heating and cooling of the sanctuary. These units are now more than 19 years old. Like your furnace at home, these units have a limited life and will at some time in the near future need to be replaced. Your continued support of the Facility Improvement Fund (formerly called the Building Fund) is essential if we are to be able to deal with these costs when they arise. I commend those who continue to faithfully give to support this fund.
