2 St. Luke s Lutheran Church July Tower 2 Greetings friends in Christ! Wow! I cannot believe that I have been serving in ministry with you for a year already! The time has gone by so quickly. It has been an absolute blessing to be here with you and working side by side with you to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. It is truly incredible to see the many different ways that St. Luke s reaches out into the community to tell the story of Christ. I am very grateful for the continued work that you do on behalf of the Gospel. It was an especially amazing experience to be a part of the VBS program that St. Luke s hosted. What an absolutely stunning display of love in action for the children of our community. The amount of work, number of volunteers, and energy that surround the program truly spoke to the movement of the Spirit in this place. I d especially like to thank Jillian Weiss who served as VBS director, and Madison and Christy Weiss who provided a lot of director support, for this program. It is a huge undertaking and it went so well! Through the VBS Cave Quest program upwards of 80 children came each of the five days to learn about the many ways that God is at work in their lives. God is so good! I am looking forward to heading to St. Louis with the senior high youth for our mission trip the week of July 3-8. It is always a humbling and centering experience to get into a new setting where we are relying on the saints that God has placed in that area to guide us in serving our brothers and sisters in Christ. This time in St. Louis promises to be an exciting time where we both have the opportunity to see this iconic city, the arch, and other notable places as well as see the places where God s love is so desperately needed. We are excited for the possibility to speak with those who were present during the riots in Ferguson and to hear some faithful discussion and presentations on faith and race. We also look forward to serving the church that is hosting us our first few days by working in their community garden by pulling weeds. And then we will spend the end of our week together with YouthWorks in a variety of service sites. I ask your prayers for our group as we enter into this week of mission, service and learning, that we will have safe travels, that our spirits will be nourished, that we will be the presence of Christ to others, and that we will see the Gospel come to life around us through our actions and discussions. Blessings, ZIKA We have all heard the news alert this spring of the threat of the Aedes Species mosquitos causing the Zika Virus. It was discovered in Africa in 1947, and is gradually spreading throughout the world because of travel. There is a high incidence now in the tropics, South America, Virgin Islands, and now into Puerto Rico. There have been spotty cases in the US from people who have traveled to these areas. When returning from these areas those infected may not even know they have the virus. As of the first of June there have been 3 cases in Michigan and 12 cases in Ohio. The incubation period is 2 to 7 days after being bitten by the mosquito. The symptoms of the Zika virus may be no symptoms (most people have none), fever, muscle and joint pain, red eyes (conjunctivitis), rash, and loss of appetite. There is a laboratory test to diagnose the virus and should be done especially if one has traveled from these areas. There is no vaccine developed at this time, but research is being done. The symptoms should be treated with rest, increased fluids, and over the counter medicines for relief of joint pain. Stay indoors, and away from others, especially those who are pregnant, or are planning a pregnancy. Animals may carry this virus also. The result of pregnant women having the virus is often birth defects. A condition happens in a newborn called microcephaly resulting with small head and an under- developed brain, plus other congenital defects in the newborn. An ultrasound can check if this has occurred during pregnancy. If your partner or anyone you are associated with has been to countries with the Zika virus, you should have a 3 week wait for close contact. Prevention has been a big topic, and in Bedford Township you may get Dunks which are donut type packets to put in standing water, bird baths, animal dishes, flower pots, buckets, or fountains that may be growing mosquito larva. They are free at the library and at Bedford Township Hall. Traps are being set to see if this type of mosquito is present in several areas of the country. Wear a good insect repellant with Deet ingredients, cover yourself with long sleeves and pants when in mosquito infested areas. Have a safe summer, and stay away from mosquitos. Judy Diener, R.N.

Our young women s Bible study will be taking the summer off from our study, but we will still meet once a month to enjoy some fellowship time together. This month s date TBD. GREETING CARDS We received a donation of brand new Papyrus greeting cards. These cards will be for sale for $2.00 each and we will have them on a table in the narthex each Sunday.
6 St. Luke s Lutheran Church July Tower 6 LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB 19 women from the club were able to gather together on June 1 st at The Seafood Restaurant on Alexis Rd. We were provided with a private room, excellent service and good food. Our charity for the month was Habitat for Humanity and $73.50 was collected and sent off to help with the next Bedford building project. Our charity project for July is Dr. Heidi Bell s Missionary trips to Guatemala. Mary Jean Bell shared with us how much Dr. Heidi ends up taking with her to each trip, and why it has been helpful to cut back on the donations of Stuff and just donate money so she can buy the needed supplies. One bag of Stuff usually weighs 80 lbs. and costs $50.00 to transport. We decided we will support with our dollars (and small medications) to eliminate the extra cost to Dr. Heidi. The July meeting of the Luncheon Group will be graciously hosted by Judy Nieman at her lake house on Wampler s Lake near Brooklyn, Michigan on July 6 th at noon. We are asked to bring a dish to share and our own choice of drink (and a chair if handy.) There will be car pooling available at the church for those who don t wish to drive. Contact Siggi Deckman at for further information. WELCA Retreat WELCA Retreat is coming soon and there are many ladies we have not heard from yet. The dates are Sept the total cost without working a fundraiser is $149. The cost if you did work a fundraiser or donated towards the fundraiser is $100. Please send deposits (and any amount) to Linda Olrich at 3916 Willys Parkway, Toledo, OH You can also put it in Linda Olrich s church mailbox. Please no cash. Our co-chairs and Bible Study ladies have been working very hard to make this an enriching weekend for everyone. St. Luke s Good Griefers The Good Griefers will be dining at the River Café at 6215 Edgewater Dr. on Thursday, July 7th at 4:00. This is an open invitation. If you are interested in joining, please contact Donna Lennex at 734/ Doris Lezon s telephone numbers have changed. Please do not use the phone numbers in the directory. Her new numbers are: 734/ (cell) 734/ (home)
7 St. Luke s Lutheran Church July Tower 7 Talk to your aging parents before it s too late Talking to your parents about caregiving, end-of-life decisions and their wishes is important, but many people put it off because they don t know how to begin the conversation. Reduce the stress by starting the discussion with something nonthreatening, like the location of important information and documents, rather than talking about their contents. Start by taking a financial inventory, which should be updated annually, that includes: Legal documents: property deeds, wills, trusts, living wills, health care and financial directives, and birth, marriage and military discharge certificates. Contact information: attorneys, accountants, financial planners, physicians and anyone else who provides financial, legal or medical advice and care. Current account information: type, number and institution for all financial accounts, including checking, savings, retirement, investment, plus loans and insurance contracts. Get financial guidance to help you prepare for the future. Contact Griff Crammond, CLTC, FIC at (734) or Terry Gautz, CLTC, FIC at (734) today, or visit Thrivent.com. There, you ll find helpful information and resources, including a checklist to help start the talk with your aging parents. For more than 100 years, Thrivent Financial has been helping members be wise with money and live generously. Habitat for Humanity ReStore Truck The Habitat for Humanity Restore Truck will be in the Food Town Parking Lot on corner of Sterns & Secor on July 9 and July 23 from 8 AM- noon to accept large donations to be sold at the ReStore Shop in Monroe with proceeds going towards the next Bedford Habitat Build. No clothing or home goods accepted. Call ReStore if you have questions 734/ The flyer for this event is on the bulletin board in the coffee area. How YOU Can Make A Difference Following the tragedy in Orlando in June, it can sometimes be difficult to find ways in which we can make a difference, being so far away. One way eligible Thrivent Members can support efforts is to direct Choice Dollars to one of the following organizations working diligently to support the victims and their families. Trinity Lutheran Church (LCMS) Orlando, FL St. Stephen Lutheran Church (ELCA) Longwood, FL Thrivent will be matching all choice Dollar directions made to these two churches on Thrivent.com through July 31st. Or, form a Thrivent Action team to help support those affected! Please visit Thrivent.com for more information!
8 St. Luke s Lutheran Church July Tower 8 Thank you! THANK YOU A special thank you goes to all of our prayer chain members. My brother, Harold, that you prayed for who had knee surgery in Germany told me that he could feel your prayers for him. Just before surgery, suddenly a very strong feeling of calm came over him, that could not explain. He remembered that I had told him that I had asked all of you on the prayer chain to pray for him. He wants to thank you very much. So as you see, no matter what state or country you are in, God is everywhere and always when you need Him the most. Thanks so much, Siggi Deckman and Brother Harold Sunday School Needs Your Help! We are in need of some Sunday School Teachers for the school year. Please consider helping us! We have 2 teachers assigned to each room so you only need to teach every other week. We also have substitutes available in case something comes up. The lessons are easy to use and have everything outlined for you so very little prep work is required. Please Pray and consider helping us with our excellent program! We are in need of the following: 2 pre-school teachers 1 5/6th grade teacher 2 kindergarten teachers THANK YOU! The Evangelism Ministry team wants to thank the persons who donated the pens in the pews to use in place of the pencils. They are great because you can write with them when needed and it shows they are from St. Luke s Lutheran Church, if maybe someone needs a pen. Thank you again! Evangelism Team WELCOME NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS Thank you to everyone who has served and made the commitment to our St. Luke s Church Council this past year. We are so blessed to have had you on our team! To those we have the pleasure to greet as new council representatives, we give our thanks for your time and your ministry! New to the St. Luke s council: Rebecca Whalen (Education) Mary Jo Price (Evangelism) Doug Becker (Fellowship) Christy Weiss (Worship Life) Ramsey Bristol (Youth) OUR EXPENSES DON'T TAKE A VACATION Summer is often a time when giving falls well below our expenses, which can leave us in a tough financial position. So far this year, our giving has been $13,500 LESS than our expenses. Fortunately, we started the year with a healthy amount of reserves, so at this point we are still financially secure. However, if this trend continues - or gets worse over the summer because of the usual drop in giving - we will have difficulty funding our ministries come the fall. Many banks offer the ability to schedule regular electronic payments from your account and we have a number of families who take advantage of this feature to keep their giving to St. Luke's constant throughout the year. Consider taking advantage of this feature if it is available to you. Please remember your St. Luke's home over the summer. Our expenses stay the same, regardless of whether you are in church or at the campground!
