2 GROWING IN GRACE AUGUST 2014 THE TOWER PAGE 2 DEAR PARTNERS, The gal who called me this morning had a last name that sounded familiar, but I was not aware of who she actually was. She was calling as the new Executive Director of Family Promise the local network of congregations formerly known as the Inter-faith Hospitality Network that provides a place to stay for homeless families with children until their housing situation can be resolved. We have supported Fairgreen Presbyterian Church on Laskey as they have hosted this ministry over the years. This lady named Rachel was calling to introduce herself as the new Executive Director and share information about an upcoming meeting. It was then she added, and I think you know my parents in fact you baptized me many years ago. Oh, I thought I recognized your name, I replied. This was Rachel Joseph, whose parents are Chuck and Barb (Jones) Joseph. Her father Chuck was president of our congregation back about 1990 and her grandparents, J.P. and Natalie Jones were active members back when I first came in In fact, a contribution from their estate became the seed money for our current Endowment Fund. Talk about life coming back around again!! Anyway, our conversation reminded me of something I was going to write about this month When you hear the word church, what comes to mind? What is the church in your mind? For many people, I imagine it is the local congregation to which they belong. For those with a more nostalgic tendency, perhaps the picture in their mind is the church in which they grew up. But as much as these are pretty common ways to think of the church, they are not the whole picture of what the church actually is. The constitution of our Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) reminds us that the church is fully present in various forms as the local congregation, as the network of local congregations such as the Southeast Michigan Synod of which we are a part, and the national network of all ELCA congregations in church-wide assembly. There is also the global dimension of the church which among Lutheran churches is the Lutheran World Federation, or more broadly, the World Council of Churches. Most basically, the church is the fellowship of all who have ever been baptized in whatever tradition of which they are a part. We take part in the various expressions of the church through supporting our Synod and the ELCA through our benevolence giving. We also support the work of the wider church through various agencies we support such as Toledo Area Ministries, Lutheran Social Services and the Lutheran Home Society. On a personal level, beyond St. Luke s, I serve the wider church as a member of the Southeast Michigan Synod Council and a board member of the Family and Youth Ministries of the Lutheran Home Society. Other members of our congregation offer their time and talents through Lutheran Social Services or a ministry called Family Promise. Though I have not seen Rachel since she was an infant (her parents moved to Detroit many years ago), it was a joy to hear of one of the children I was privileged to baptized being an active part of the church beyond our walls. This is not the only such story, only the most recent. Isn t it great to be part of the church at work in the world? With much love, your partner in the Gospel of Grace,

3 GROWING IN GRACE AUGUST 2014 THE TOWER PAGE 3 ST LUKE S LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB A new fellowship group is forming here at St. Luke s! The St. Luke s Ladies Luncheon Club will meet at the church on the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 am and carpool to a variety of restaurants for lunch and fellowship. Or feel free to meet us there if you wish! There will be a specified charity to support each month (specifics to be decided by group) and there will be a donation for that each month. (For example, socks for Hannah s Socks; Mittens for Salvation Army, etc.) The first meeting of this group will be on August 6th, 2014 and the destination for lunch will be The Black Forest Café, 3624 Seaman Rd., Oregon, Ohio. Siggi Deckman will be our contact person and she needs a head count to make reservations every month. Her number is If you have any questions, please feel free to call Siggi. ORGAN UPDATE AUGUST 2014 The organ committee met on July 22nd and reviewed the newest quote received on rebuilding the current organ. This quote was $112,500 and has an asterisk saying that it may be extra for a new blower also. The 3 quotes received now to rebuild the existing organ range from $112,500-$150,000. The 3 quotes received to purchase a new digital organ range from $43,000-$118,000. A deluxe version of the Infinity organ by Rogers that most impressed everyone and is probably the best suited for St Luke's, has been offered for a one month demo for us to test out. They will bring it in and set it up for a cost that will be deducted from the purchase price if we decide to buy it. It will arrive at St. Luke's on Sept 1 and be here for 4 Sundays. There will be Temple talks to explain the need and why it will enhance our worship services now and in the future. There will be Q and A forums after services to answer any questions also. We hope that everyone will be able to attend one of the services so everyone is informed. The organ committee is comprised of Linda Olrich, Ron Diener, Doris Lezon, Mary Jean Bell, Bill Winson, Fred Georgeson and Lori Neumeyer.

4 GROWING IN GRACE AUGUST 2014 THE TOWER PAGE 4 VBS 2014 WRAP UP! THANK YOU to our St. Luke s family for your love and support of Vacation Bible School 2014!! During the week of July 7 th - 11 th we learned that God filled the world with a lot of crazy creatures...including us! We learned that when we feel weird, different, or even lost in a crowd nothing compares to the extraordinary love of Jesus. We hosted 86 children on average each day and they rotated through stations around our church such as One-of-a-Kind Bible Adventures, Imagination Station, Untamed Games, Kid-Vid Cinema & Missions, Critter Café, and Sing & Play Stampede. Our mission project for the week was raising money to help people attain clean drinking water. Each day we talked about the importance of clean water and about those in the world who do not have access to it. The children of Vacation Bible School raised $ to donate to Sawyer Products (water filters) to help in that effort! Thank you to EVERONE who unselfishly gave of their time before, during, and after to help make this year a success! We are already looking ahead so please mark your calendars for June 15-19, 2015 for Vacation Bible School 2015!!! J A special THANK YOU and blessing to Cathy Thomas who will be moving on to another ministry here at St. Luke s. We thank her for her countless hours of service to our Lord through Vacation Bible School. THANK YOU CATHY! Kim Diver Vacation Bible School Director 2015

5 GROWING IN GRACE AUGUST 2014 THE TOWER PAGE 5 PARISH HEALTH MINISTRY PAGE UNDERSTANDING MIGRAINES Migraine headaches are acute or chronic headaches occurring several times a month or less, lasting 4 hours to 72 hours. They start with mood changes, fatigue, or an aura of visual problems, such as flashing lights or sensitivity to lights and sounds. An intense throbbing headache occurs on one side or both sides of the head with possible nausea and vomiting. Fluid retention, and tingling or numbness of an arm or leg can accompany these symptoms. All one wants to do is to lie down in a dark and quiet place. Migraines are very common with those of a family history of migraines, often starting in childhood and adolescence. They are more common in women between age 15 and 55, and often connected with hormonal changes. Chemical changes in the brain occur and swelling of the blood vessels with migraines. Triggers include stress, sleeplessness, unusual smells such as paint, certain foods and food additives, changes in the weather, alcohol, and some medications. Keep a good headache diary, and take to your Dr. for treatment. The Dr. may order other tests to rule out other causes of headaches, before treating you. There are no cures for migraines, but try to avoid some of the triggers. Reduce stress, do regular exercise, quit smoking, maintain a daily routine, avoid estrogen products, and eat regular meals. Your Dr. may order medications for an acute onset to start early as soon as you feel the migraine starting. There are many new preventative medications now developed for migraines taken daily. Some people take certain vitamins, acupuncture, do relaxation exercises and have massages for migraines. Many of these new treatments can keep migraines under control. If you have an abrupt headache and signs and symptoms of a stroke as covered in our last newsletter go to the ER. God s Blessings and enjoy your summer. Judy Diener R.N.
