6 Zion is responsible for filling nine Christmas Basket/Boxes for needy families in Humboldt County. If you wish to support this project, place your gift in an envelope marked Christmas Baskets/Boxes with your envelope number and put in the offering plate or leave it in the church office. LWML MISSION NOTES: For DECEMBER we are collecting monetary donations and Wal-Mart gift cards for Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa. They use the cards to purchase inventory items and perishable items that are needed to support our mission team there. If you prefer to donate money toward the gift cards, please put your donation in an envelope marked Mission Central and leave it in the church office or in the offering plate. Mission Central provides support for worldwide missionary work of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. In addition to monetary support, they ask for prayers for our missionaries in the mission field. We also ask that you think and pray for Pastor Carl Hanson and family in Hong Kong, which our church supports through Mission Central. Thank you for your support of our mission projects. Thanks to Thrivent Live Generously we will make Christmas bags for Beacon of Hope. Items needed for the bags are: socks, men s boxers/underwear (size M-XXL), deodorant, disposable razors, foot powder, combs, shampoo (regular size bottles), winter gloves, and winter face mask caps. These items are needed by December 15. Please place your donations in the Narthex box. Thanks. LWML Mission Committee: Marian A., Bev A., Joan A. Sunday School Parents: The Shepherd s Christmas is our theme for this year s Sunday School Children s Christmas Service held the evening of Sunday, December 17. Come celebrate the Christmas Story! Our practice schedule is listed below. Thanks for bringing your children to the practices and Sunday school as we will be learning songs for our service. If you will not be able to join us for the Christmas program, please let your teacher or the office know, so we can plan accordingly for speaking parts. We greatly enjoy working with your child and look forward to a wonderful celebration! Practice schedule for Sunday School Children s Service: (Each Sunday morning during Sunday School music) Saturday, December 16 9:00-11:00 a.m. Sunday, December 17 Sunday School Dress rehearsal for Service Sunday, December 17 6:30 p.m. SS Children s Christmas Service (Please have children arrive at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.) Sunday School Parents: A Lutheran Family Service blue offering bag has been sent home with the your children. Take a few minutes during this busy holiday season to use this devotional tool and come together as a family as you celebrate the coming birth of our Savior. The blue offering bag should be returned the night of the Children s Christmas Service Sunday, December 17. Please tie the bags loosely and not in a knot so they can be reused next year.
7 The Sunday School Mission Project this year is the Beacon of Hope out of Fort Dodge. It is a Christ-Centered Faith-based ministry working cooperatively with the community to eliminate homelessness. If you would like to help out the Sunday School with their Mission, the following items are needed and will be donated to the Beacon of Hope: Toothbrushes New Washcloths Travel Size Toothpaste Pocket Packs of Kleenex Dental Floss Hairbrush/Comb Travel Size Deodorant Toilet Paper Disposable Razors Paper Towels Travel Size Shaving Cream Kleenex Bar of Soap New Tube Socks Travel Size Shampoo/Conditioner New Underwear/Boxers Hats and Gloves For a list of additional items or other ways to donated please visit Candles on the Altar longer shells with more capacity: The current shells (the white part of the altar candles) hold a capacity to burn for about 3 to possibly 4 services. They are routinely filled by the ladies of the church every couple of weeks and they have been very diligent about filling them. There have been times where the candles still have become low (typically when we become busy with funerals and weddings). One idea proposed to help would be to buy replacements inserts with a greater capacity. The current inserts are about 10 inches high. They sell replacement inserts that are 17 inches high -- this would obviously increase the capacity of the oil in the candles. We could also try wider diameter inserts. We would keep the schedule for filling them the same, but with the increased capacity, they shouldn t run low. The replacement inserts would cost roughly $100 each. There are six candles on the altar. The council thought it wise to ask the congregation if anyone would be willing to donate toward the cost to purchase the inserts. Donations can be routed through the offering with envelope marked candles. Greeters are wanted at the Sunday School doors from 8:30-8:45 a.m. on Sundays to greet and especially welcome our visitors and grandparents, etc. to the Sunday School area and guide students to their rooms. Please sign up by the Sunday School doors if you are able to be a Sunday School greeter. Put your name, telephone number and check the box if you would like a reminder call. Thank you. There are sign-up sheets on the LWML bulletin board for anyone who did not sign up previously to furnish a cake or salad or to help serve at funerals. Please do not sign up if you already have. Thank you.
8 JR. LYC Scrip Program: Orders are taken for Scrip Cards the 1 st and 3 rd Sunday of the month. By buying groceries, gas or giving them as gifts you support the Jr. LYC. The following cards allow Jr. LYC to make a reasonable profit: 1- Fareway 3 percent back 2- Hy-Vee 5 percent back 3- Casey s 3 percent back We also have three $25 T-J-Maxx/Marshalls/HomeGoods cards available. These cards make great Christmas gifts while helping our Jr. LYC kids! LUTHERAN WITNESS, the official publication of the LC-MS, is available to members. The cost for an individual subscription is now $ Please consider reimbursing Zion. Place your offering in an envelope marked Lutheran Witness Sub. with your envelope number. We thank those who have reimbursed Zion. If you are not receiving the Lutheran Witness and would like to, please notify the church office. CANS FOR CAMP OKOBOJI Please take all empty pop cans and bottles and put them in the container located outside on the east side of the Sunday school wing of the church building. Thank you. Humboldt Middle School Christmas Concert: The Humboldt Middle School Music Department is pleased to present their annual Christmas Concert on Monday, December 11, at 7:00 p.m. in the R. Wesley Carlson Auditorium. The concert features the Middle School 7/8 Grade Concert Band, 6 th Grade Chorus and 7/8 Grade Chorus. It is the students goal to fill the R.W. Carlson Auditorium with Christmas spirit through beautiful and joyous music. Each ensemble will contribute to the season s spirit by performing your holiday favorites, mixed with fresh new music that everyone is sure to enjoy! Admission is only $3 for adults, and $2 for students. See you there! BUILDING HEALTHY FAMILIES: You have heard the saying, the family that prays together, stays together? A survey by the Barna Research Group indicates that this old saying is still true, not just for families but also for married couples. Research documents that couples who hold a shared belief system (including prayer and attending church regularly) have a significantly lower divorce rate than the general population. So just a little reminder in case you didn t already know: growing in your faith is not only good for you and for your children, it s good for your marriage!
