REFORMATION DAY the 500 th edition: This year marks the 500 th year anniversary of the Reformation, beginning when Martin Luther famously pounded the 95 thesis onto the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg in We will have a number of things going on at Zion as we celebrate this historic year. We begin with a special Reformation themed service next Sunday, October 29 th (Reformation Day) where, among other things, we will have the Sunday School singing. Following the service (at about 11 a.m.), you are invited to the Fellowship Hall to watch the new movie about Martin Luther that was aired on PBS is September. Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World will be our movie this month showing next Sunday, October 29 following the Sunday morning service - so around 11:00 or so in the fellowship hall. Bring a lawn chair if you like and/or snacks to share. In the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation, this documentary examines the life of Martin Luther and the profound impact his ideas had on the course of Western history. Narrated by Downton Abbey's Hugh Bonneville. Circuit Joint 500 th Anniversary Reformation Service November 1: Join us for a Joint Reformation Celebration at St. Paul s Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge on Wednesday, November 1 at 7 p.m. The service is collaboration between the LCMS congregations in the Humboldt and Fort Dodge circuit. We are looking for trumpet players, for people who might want to sing in the choir, and for a nice turnout for the event. 5 The 2017 Budget Congregational meeting was held following the service last Sunday. The 2018 budget of $420,742 was adopted and the weekly need will be $8,091. The Gemütlichkeit Committee has distributed the Committee Chairs and Member list for the 29 th Annual Gemütlichkeit Luncheon in your church mail box. Please check to see where your name is on the list. The Committee apologizes if it has inadvertently forgotten to include anyone. Please inform us of any omissions, misspellings of names or incorrect telephone numbers. If you are unable to work or provide what you are down for please contact your chair person or the Gemütlichkeit committee. Thanks for your help and support in this LWML project. Lynette Christensen Carol Christiansen Jodi Giddings Arloa Rapple Mary Stolle Bev Zinnel Narthex display Martin Luther: Take home a book or DVD on Martin Luther and learn about his life, and his works. Discover how his realization that salvation comes through faith and not works sparked the Protestant Reformation that changed the world. Candles on the Altar longer shells with more capacity: The current shells (the white part of the altar candles) hold a capacity to burn for about 3 to possibly 4 services. They are routinely filled by the ladies of the church every couple of weeks and they have been very diligent about filling them. There have been times where the candles still have become low (typically when we become busy with funerals and weddings). One idea proposed to help would be to buy replacements inserts with a greater capacity. The current inserts are about 10 inches high. They sell replacement inserts that are 17 inches high -- this would obviously increase the capacity of the oil in the candles. We could also try wider diameter inserts. We would keep the schedule for filling them the same, but with the increased capacity, they shouldn t run low. The replacement inserts would cost roughly $100 each. There are six candles on the altar. The council thought it wise to ask the congregation if anyone would be willing to donate toward the cost to purchase the inserts. Donations can be routed through the offering with envelope marked candles. Operation Christmas Child: Pick up a shoebox in the Narthex and fill it with goodies for a child that would not otherwise receive a Christmas gift this year! We were able to fill and send 55 boxes last year - we hope to fill even more this year! You can donate the $9 shipping online and print a label to go on your box and receive an later on as to where that gift went! Please have your boxes back to church by Sunday, November 12. Contact Brianne with any questions See the bulletin insert for more information.
6 New and Renew Membership Class offered: Thinking of becoming a member of Zion? Or have you been a member of Zion, but would like to refresh your memory on the basic tenants of the Lutheran faith? Or maybe you just have questions about faith that you ve been wondering about for a while. Whatever the case, you are cordially invited to attend a new member (or renew member) class that is offered at Zion beginning in November and running for 5 weeks. The dates for the event are 6 p.m. on November 5 th, 12 th, 19 th, 26 th, and December 3 rd. If people would be able to bring food and or snacks for the event, that might be helpful sign up for the class, and/or for bringing snacks for the event. We have a sign-up sheet located on the east bulletin board in the Narthex. See you there! If you are interested in donating candy for the children s messages, the supply that we have is running low. The 2017 Flower Chart is posted to the south of the east bulletin board in the Narthex. If you would like to sign up Sunday, November 5 is available. Pastor Kyle will be applying for the Iowa District West Ministry Excellence Fund. This is a grant set up to assist new pastors and other church workers with tackling the student loan debt they have accrued while in college or seminary. The amount individuals receive from the district is dependent upon how many applications the district receives, but they can expect between $1,000 to $4,000 in assistance annually for up to five years. In addition to this, if a congregation decides to contribute to this grant, the district will match the congregation s contribution dollar for dollar up to $1,000. This allows for the church worker to potentially receive a maximum grant of $6,000. If anyone desires to contribute to this matching fund, contributions can be made through the church office or in the general offering with Pastor Kyle MEF in the memo line. Ellie Rippee, who is at Long Term Care at the Humboldt Hospital, is in need of rides to church on Sunday mornings at Zion. If anyone is able to drive Ellie to church please let the church office know. Thanks. If you have changed your phone number or are now using only a cell number, have a new address, or have moved and have a new physical address, please contact the church office at zion@goldfieldaccess.net or with your new phone number, address, and/or physical address. JR. LYC Scrip Program: Orders are taken for Scrip Cards the 1 st and 3 rd Sunday of the month. By buying groceries, gas or giving them as gifts you support the Jr. LYC. The following cards allow Jr. LYC to make a reasonable profit: 1- Fareway 3 percent back 2- Hy-Vee 5 percent back 3- Casey s 3 percent back
7 CANS FOR CAMP OKOBOJI Please take all empty pop cans and bottles and put them in the container located outside on the east side of the Sunday school wing of the church building. Thank you. Camp Okoboji does not need any more plastic sacks. Thanks to all who helped with this project. It saves Camp a lot of money using them for small waste baskets and cleaning up in the fish shack. We will let you know when more will be needed in the spring, which is a much busier time for Camp. LUTHERAN WITNESS, the official publication of the LC-MS, is available to members. The cost for an individual subscription is now $ Please consider reimbursing Zion. Place your offering in an envelope marked Lutheran Witness Sub. with your envelope number. We thank those who have reimbursed Zion. If you are not receiving the Lutheran Witness and would like to, please notify the church office. Due to the generosity of a retired Laborer, Ron Johnson, Laborers For Christ has a trailer full of tools that is currently being housed in a makeshift partially covered trailer. The concern is for the security and care of the tools. The ideal covered trailer would be a 16' tandem wheel, but a 12' would also be much appreciated. Jeff Herndon, LFC Manager, would house the trailer in the St. Louis area in order to make it more centrally located when not on a project. Please contact Jeff Herndon at if you could help with this needed trailer for the thousands of dollars of tools that were given to LFC.
