3 Easter Blessings by Father Michael One of my annual routines is to visit all of the Level 7 Religious Education classes at the catechists homes. I just completed the final visit last week. The students are given the opportunity to ask questions. The array of questions varies tremendously, but there are a few that are asked with great frequency. I will comment on two of those questions. First, why and when did I think about becoming a priest? I first started thinking about being a priest when I was in 7 th grade. I used to see the priest giving his homily, and for some reason I found something very engaging about that. As I grew, I continued to have a sense this is what God was calling me to do. (Sorry, I don t have a dramatic story of God breaking through the clouds and dramatically calling me to priesthood.) The second question I m asked is some variation on why priests can t get married or if I get lonely not having my own family. So, I find myself in the position of trying to explain the virtues of celibacy to children. One of the answers I give is that it is a sign of complete commitment to the people I have been asked to serve. It is the parish community that becomes my family and my source of life. It is that answer to this question that is the foundation for this article. The longer I am here, the more appreciative I am of Holy Cross. It is a rich privilege to be able to celebrate the sacraments and preach to this community. There are so many people who give in so many ways. On any given week there are 175 Religious Education classes taking place because we have catechists who are willing to share their faith and their homes. There are parishioners who commit themselves to serving on various committees that address essential aspects of parish life. There is a crew of those with green thumbs who create and maintain our Community Garden. There are those who are generous with their treasure so that we have the resources to meet our needs. There are so many little details that take place behind the scenes; washing the linens that are used for liturgy, scheduling ministers, watering plants, counting the collection. (Forgive me if I did not mention your specific ministry.) It is remarkable to recognize all the energy and sacrifices that enable Holy Cross to thrive. 3 Continued on next page

4 Easter Blessings continued In spite of the many good things we do, there is room for more. We still have empty pews at Masses that we would love to see filled. We still need people willing to share their faith with our children, engaged couples, grieving families, and new parents. We need people who can financially support our mission and help us prepare for the future. There is always room for another catechist, choir member, hospitality minister, and so much more. This community abounds with life. Could God be calling you to be more deeply a part of Holy Cross? This Easter I give thanks to God for the joy and life I find at Holy Cross. May you give thanks to God for the wondrous ways in which His presence is revealed in your life. Easter Blessings to you and your loved ones. Pray for Peace! EASTER FLOWERS IN MEMORY OF... 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Welcome to Holy Cross Religious Education The Religious Education Office is planning ahead to the Formation Year. We need your help so that we can adequately plan to meet the needs of our parish. If you have a child entering First Grade in September you need to register. If you have recently moved to our parish you need to register in the parish. Our program is home based. Classes do not take place at the Church; rather they are held in the homes of our Catechists. Because of this, there are geographical limits on who we are able to accommodate. Please contact our office for more specific information. First time registration needs to be done in person at our office. Registration needs to be completed by June 16, Office Hours: Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 & 1:00-4:00 If your child was not baptized at Holy Cross you need to bring a copy of your child s Baptism Certificate. For those who are already part of our program, you need to re-register for the upcoming year. Materials will be sent to your home by the end of April and they may be returned by mail. Please note the deadline of June 16, A detailed outline of our program is available on-line or at our office. But, there are a few important details to be noted. Children must successfully complete each grade level to proceed to the next. The Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation require a minimum of two years of preparation. Most importantly, we need to work together. Faithful attendance at classes and parent workshops is essential. As comprehensive and informative as our program is, this is only one part of your child s faith formation. The greatest thing you can do to nurture your faith and the faith of your child is to regularly be part of our Sunday Eucharist. The Catechism of the Church states that parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. We are privileged to work with you in this task. We thank you for your cooperation in allowing us to be part of your lives. We look forward to a fruitful year where everyone, young and old, continues to grow in understanding the gift of our faith. 7
