3 Watch Your Step with Father Michael No, my title this week is not an introduction to a lesson on living a virtuous life or a warning about the fires of hell. It is a very practical message; watch your step with all the ice and snow. As I shared with some of you last week, I found a nasty patch of ice in the parking lot that brought me to the ground before I even knew what hit me. My ankle took the brunt of the spill. Happily nothing was broken, and after four or five days of hobbling around the sprain healed itself. I also had to deal with the road to my house resembling more of a toboggan run than a driveway. Unfortunately, it froze solid with several tire ruts that became like concrete. It was an adventurous trek each time I tried coming or going. A few nights the driveway won as I had to leave the car midway and walk up to the house. Fortunately, we did have one day when the temperature neared the freezing mark so Jerry (the man who does all our plowing) was able to finally blast through the frozen mess and open everything up. At least there were a few clear days before the next blast of snow came. No doubt about it, we are having a winter like we have not had in years. As I write this article we just received word that our diocese has a new Auxiliary Bishop. The Holy Father announced that Msgr. Andrzej Zglejszewski is now bishopelect. Some of you may know Fr. On-jay through his work with Liturgy in our diocese. He has led many of the training sessions for Eucharistic Ministers as well as the many workshops that introduced the Roman Missal several years ago. You will see him regularly on Telecare as he says Mass from Rockville Centre. His Ordination will take place on March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation. This is a happy announcement for our diocese. Here is a bit of trivia for you; announcements from Rome for a new bishop always take place on Tuesdays. (It is also the day Southwest Airlines announce their sales. ) I love watching the winter Olympics. The strength and ability of so many of these athletes is amazing. At one point in life I was a pretty good skier. It has been about 8 years since I hit the slopes. While I would still give it a try, I would also be easily persuaded to head somewhere with an abundance of sunshine and warmth, particularly this winter. I hope the kids enjoy the vacation week. I suspect some schools may need to take back vacation and holidays later in the spring, especially if any more snow days are used. Have a happy week. 3
4 2014 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL A Place to Call Home Marion lived with her mom through her early adult life. Her family was anxious about who would care for Marion, who is developmentally disabled, when mom passed away. They believed it would be best if she lived with one of them when the time came. But mom wanted a fuller life for Marion and she worried that her daughter wasn t living the life that God had planned for her; she knew she was capable of great things. Her mother turned to Catholic Charities home for people with developmental disabilities then, wonderful things did happen to Marion. I saw my sister changing, explains Richard, Marion s brother. She started working and became really independent. She gained a sense of responsibility and there was camaraderie in her new home. She not only had people that she could depend on, but more importantly, she had friends that depended on her. Catholic Charities has been operating residences for the developmentally disabled for over 35 years, providing people like Marion with a sense of belonging and a place to call home. When you donate to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you provide support for men and women like Marion. You help them to live full and happy lives. To hear more stories of the people touched by the Catholic Ministries Appeal visit to view the video or call ext 2 for more information. Please consider donating to the Appeal in order to help men and women like Marion. Thank You! 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Celebrating Religious Education Week! Please make sure to stop and see the posters that will be on display in the Atrium on the weekends of February 22/23 and March 1/2 from our Religious Education classes. The posters show the community service that our children have been doing this year in their groups. We are very proud of all their accomplishments, and we thank the Catechists and parents for their assistance in these projects. MORE FROM RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Gently Used First Communion Clothes We are often asked to assist families who struggle with the cost of outfitting their children on the day they receive the Lord for the first time. Please help us to help these families by donating gently used First Communion clothes. In particular, Communion Dresses, Veils, and Suits are most welcome. Please drop off to the Religious Education Office during regular business hours, before March 1, Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Eyeglass Donation Box During the weekend Masses on February 15/16 and February 22/23, one of our Religious Education Classes will be collecting used eyeglasses. Please look through your home, in drawers and boxes for old reading glasses, prescription glasses and sunglasses. Children s eyeglasses are in great need. They will then be distributed to people in developing nations who do not have access to basic eye care. Thank you for being the gift of sight for someone. 5

STEWARDSHIP CORNER I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above other people. Jesus is clear it s the love that you have in your heart that matters. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner in the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.
