3 Just Checking Did Summer Really End? by Father Michael Although autumn officially began last week, the weather the last few days has been anything but fall like. The short sleeve shirts are still out, and the AC is still running. This has been a delightful extension of summer weather. I m not complaining; before long we will be throwing ice melt and shoveling snow. And, we are certainly in better shape than the many people trying to recover from hurricanes and earthquakes. On Wednesday several members of the Pastoral Team and I attended a special workshop at the seminary which addressed the many issues surrounding the opioid crisis on Long Island. This is a very complicated issue, and it is destroying the lives of many people. It may be closer to home than anyone realizes. There is no easy solution but greater awareness is the first step in beginning to address this serious problem. Have you noticed our Sanctuary lamp? This is the third week since it was installed after its renovation. I think lighting the lamp from the interior brings out much more of its beauty than when it was lit with a light bulb hanging above it. This project may seem to be a rather simple undertaking, but in fact there were many little details that had to be accounted for. There were many precise angles that needed to be cut so that the wood fit properly around the black base. The overall height was raised so that people would no longer be bumping their heads on the base. I am very grateful to Vince Mazurek for all his help with the rewiring and electrical aspects of this project. Thank you to Art Lichtenberger, who I know from my former parish in Medford. He was able to master the carpentry details of this undertaking. It is my hope that the lamp is far more visible and draws attention to the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. We are moving quickly in being able to begin our parking lot project. I have written Bishop Brennan, who is the Vicar General for the Diocese, to request permission to proceed (this is standard protocol). Once we receive permission our paving contractor is ready to go. While we will do our best to work around scheduled events and meetings on our calendar, there may be an inconvenience or two for the week that the work is taking place. More details will be forthcoming. I offer a warm Holy Cross welcome to the two newest members of our Pastoral Team. Ms. Pat Gyscek is working in Parish Outreach. Ms. Kathleen Reid is our new Director of Religious Education. We are blessed to have both of these women with us and look forward to their many years of ministry here at Holy Cross. We offer our Holy Hour for Peace on the first Saturday of the month from 3:45 to 4:45PM in the Worship Area. Please join us on October 7th as we spend time before the Blessed Sacrament praying for God s gift of peace to touch our wounded world. 3

4 WE WELCOME PAT GYSCEK & KATHLEEN REID! To the Parishioners of Holy Cross Parish, I am one of two new faces on the pastoral staff of the Parish and am pleased to be working with Mary Anne in the Outreach office. The last twenty years of my life I have found excitement and satisfaction in being involved in different roles in this wonderful ministry of the Church. I volunteered as a Core Worker during the years when I practiced as a community health nurse. I was a founding member of Resurrection Church in Farmingville, as you were building this community of faith in Nesconset. In the late 1990 s and early 2000 s, I was Parish Social Ministry coordinator at St. Sylvester s Parish in Medford. During much of my time in Medford, Father Michael along with Father Ed Kealey led our very vibrant faith community. For the last ten years I have worked as the Suffolk County Developer for the Parish Social Ministry Department of Catholic Charities. Through these connections, I have come to know and admire Mary Anne and Connie. When I heard that Connie was retiring, I was hoping that I could return to the ministry that I love best, and that is direct service to our sisters and brothers who are going through difficult times. I look forward to getting to know this community of faith and already am impressed with the good work the parish has done for your neighbors. Blessings and Peace, Pat Gyscek Dear Parishioners of Holy Cross, I am the other new face on the pastoral staff of the Parish and am happy to be here as the new Director of Religious Education. I have thirty-five years of experience in Religious Education and have worked with all ages from Level 1 to Adult. Whatever parish I have been in, it has always brought me excitement and joy to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all God s people. I have only been here for a few weeks and already I sense a spirit of enthusiasm and togetherness that tells me you are happy to be parishioners here at Holy Cross and are willing to share your faith and serve your neighbor. I enjoy travelling both nationally and internationally. My favorite state after New York is Vermont. I hope to travel to Italy in the not too distant future. I can t close without being a proud Aunt. I have five nieces whom I adore. They are young adults and range in age from twenty-three to thirty-one. Three live in New York City, one in Chicago and one in Florence, Italy. I am very happy that Father Michael decided to hire me, and I look forward to being a member of the Staff and the Parish Community. Peace and Prayer, Kathleen Reid YOUTH GROUP A special thank you to all teens who came to our Fall Kickoff event! We had 15 new members and about 30 teens in total!
