3 Happy Sunshine with Father Michael This weekend we celebrate the longest day of the year. The summer solstice is the day we enjoy more hours of sunshine than on any other day. Although there may still be a few days of school left, it formally marks the beginning of the summer. I think everyone just delights in the long evenings. Enjoy. OK, here is my second attempt at planning the picture party meeting. It will be this Wednesday, June 25, in the Atrium beginning at 7:30PM. Those who went on the trip to Colorado and New Mexico will bring their pictures, albums and favorite souvenirs. We will fondly recall our shared adventure. But, we will also talk about what might be done next year. All are invited to attend, whether you would like to see where we have been or to help plan where we might go. This week the Pastoral Team and Office Staff had our annual evaluation and planning meeting. It was really a fruitful day. It is very useful to dedicate a block of time to review the many aspects of parish life. It is helpful in our being more effective in our work and in meeting as many needs as we can within the parish. One undertaking that has already begun is we are looking to offer a parish wide survey. The survey itself will probably not be ready until sometime in autumn. We believe it will be helpful in identifying and prioritizing needs within the parish. While we have a good start in creating the questions, we could use some additional helping hands. At one point in time, there was a Web Committee in the parish. We need to re-gather those folks to be part of this effort. I am also looking for someone who has ability with graphic arts. In addition, if there are any folks who have any expertise with surveys, as far as administering them as well as processing the results, we could use your wisdom. Please let me know if you would like to be part of this process for the parish. This Thursday marks the beginning of my second year here as pastor. I can t believe how quickly the first year has gone. It has been a wondrous adventure so far. I am grateful to all those who have made me feel so welcome and to those who support me and the parish in various ways. I know there are still so many people for me to get to know and more work to be done. But, I feel abundantly blessed to have been sent to Holy Cross. 4 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION More Good News from Religious Ed Congratulations to Michael Makowski, a Level 7 student in our Religious Education program. Michael was named a winner in the Diocese of Rockville Centre Religious Liberty Speech Contest. Michael will give his speech at the Fortnight for Freedom rally sponsored by Catholics for Freedom of Religion. This will take place on Saturday, June 28, at 10 am at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip. As mentioned in a previous bulletin, Emma Hembury, a Level 4 Religious Ed student was named a winner in the Art Contest. We congratulate both Emma and Michael on their achievements! 7 Catholics for Freedom of Religion Educating and Advocating for Freedom of Religion for All A June 22, 2014 America s First Freedom: Religious Liberty At the May 13, 2014 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, Robert P.George told Catholics, The days of acceptable Christianity are over. The days of comfortable Catholicism are past. He warned that a price is demanded of all committed believers, as mainstream America registers its preference for Catholics who might go to Mass but do not embrace the totality of the Church s teachings or those who know the Church s teaching but prefer safety in their silence. In other words, a tame Catholic who is ashamed of the Gospel is socially acceptable, said George, even as he called on his audience to take risks and follow Christ s words to take up thy cross and follow me. To believe in the Gospel is to make oneself a marked man or woman, he said. Catholics for Freedom of Religion (CFFR) is growing to be a significant part of that voice. CFFR is a grassroots effort to empower the laity to educate and advocate for religious freedom on a nonpartisan, ecumenical basis within each parish. In the two years since its founding, CFFR has provided dozens of speakers and events to thousands of Long Island Catholics all guided by our mission statement to educate every generation of Catholics about our Freedom of Religion how rare it is, how dearly it was purchased for us and how quickly it can be lost.
