3 Schools Out by Father Michael I remember those first days of summer vacation were always the most magical. There was a feeling of accomplishment as another school year was completed. And, there was the anticipation of many weeks of summer fun. I hope all our young people use well these days of summer. And, congratulations to all those who graduated. I hope you look forward to your next step in life with excitement and hope. I pray that these days of summer bring everyone an opportunity for some relaxation and renewal of spirit. A few parishioners have asked about the gold vessels that were used prior to getting the new silver pieces. Nothing has been thrown out or given away. It is my hope to use the different sets and vessels at different times of the year. For example, during Advent or Lent we can change what we use (as we change the color of vestments and banners) in these different liturgical seasons. One of the few items that was identified in the survey as needing to be addressed was parking for the handicapped. I believe somewhere down the road we will need to make an investment in improving and/or expanding our parking lot. But, for the meantime we are working on an interim solution. There is a fire exit door to the right of the music ministry area. With relatively minimal cost or effort that door can be changed and a ramp built leading to the back area of the parking lot. Additional handicapped spaces could be created there allowing easier access to the church. There are some details to be worked out, but that seems to be the best route which we are pursuing. Allow me to offer a few quick statistics regarding our progress with the Catholic Ministries Appeal. There are 3,465 registered families in our parish. So far, 231 households (6% of the 3,465) have generously pledged $43,069 or 59.24% of our diocesan-mandated goal of $72,700. We are $29,631 short of goal. I am appealing to you to consider making a donation. No gift is too small. Every donation will be greatly appreciated as it will help us to reach our goal. There are many individuals who benefit from our support, but it can also be of benefit to our parish. If we reach our goal, we will receive back a rebate of more than $13,000. Information and envelopes are available in the Atrium. This past Friday marked my second anniversary as Pastor here at Holy Cross. I continue to feel very blessed to be part of this community. I look forward to the years ahead in getting to know more and more people and to do my best to be a good shepherd for our parish. We offer a Holy Hour for Peace on the first Saturday of the month from 3:45-4:45 PM in the Worship Area. Please come and spend some time before the Blessed Sacrament on Saturday, July 4th, praying for God s gift of peace to touch our wounded world. 3
4 COME JOIN US! You are invited to a spiritual evening of Presentation and Prayer. Revelation through Creation Thursday, July 7:30 PM in the Chapel The Holy Father s most recent encyclical: Laudato Si Care for our Common Home has received much attention. But his foundational premise is not something new. There is a long history among mystics and saints who have understood the intimate connection between God s Incarnation and Mother Earth. This evening will be a presentation on the writings of St. Francis and others who offer profound insight into gift and wonder of God s creation. But it will also be an evening of prayer, allowing us to share in an experience of this wondrous gift God has shared with us. Presenter: Mr. Ronald Paulsen is a native Long Islander who spent his early years on our local waters as a bay man. His career advanced into Environmental Science. He has had vast experience working with some of the most polluted, neglected, and abused corners of our nation in terms of the environment. He is graduating Fr. Richard Rohr s Living School and is able to make powerful spiritual connections between God s Spirit and His creation that surrounds us. Please join us for this evening of prayer and insight into the gift of God s creation. 4
5 PARISH NEWS Anointing of the Sick In the past, people received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick only when they were gravely ill. However, the Church believes that the Anointing of the Sick should be experienced while we are still able to be aware of God s peaceful presence within us. You are strongly encouraged to receive this Sacrament if you are having upcoming surgery, are dealing with a chronic or debilitating illness, are suffering from addiction, mental health issues or frailty. On the first Sunday of each month, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be offered after the 9:30 AM Mass. Sunday, July 5th, is the next date the Anointing will be offered. Special Collection This weekend, June 27th/28th, at the Offertory we will also be collecting for Peter s Pence. This collection provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. The Parish Office is closed on Friday, July 3rd, for the Independence Day holiday. All are welcome! We would all love to see you! After Mass, we will have a Graduation/End of the Year Party from 6 to 8PM. We will have delicious food, fun-filled games and, of course, amazing company. And, we will discuss the amazing experiences we had this year with all of the special people who are a huge part of this wonderful program! This is definitely a night not to miss! Come on down, and let's enjoy a fantastic end to another successful school year. Furthermore, our Youth Summer Calendar will be in the bulletin next week. All are welcome to those events as well.
