3 Jumping into January with Father Michael This is my first opportunity to write since before Christmas (early bulletin deadlines meant that I had to write my previous two columns about a week before Christmas). I have to say it was a wonderful Christmas. The church was decorated splendidly; thank you to all those helping hands that created and kept alive all our Christmas plants. I must admit I was nervous before the 4:00 Mass on Christmas Eve; I was not sure about my homily, and the place was packed to the rafters. But once the celebrations began it was a wonderful experience. And the coating of snow we received later that night certainly made it look all the more festive. It was a long and busy 20 hours, but it truly was exciting and life giving. Certainly we are dealing with winter this year. While I enjoy the beauty of the snow, it is a headache and major expense cleaning up after one of Mother Nature s storms. Both inside and out, our property requires some tender loving care to look as good as it does. Since September, we have been having the 5:00 PM Sunday evening Mass each week. However, I have decided to reinstate the previous practice of NOT having that Mass on holiday weekends. So next Sunday, January 19, there will be no 5:00 PM evening Mass. The same will also be true for Presidents Day weekend on February 16. I had an energizing meeting with our Stewardship Committee this week. There is a value in trying to incorporate the importance of Stewardship into our regular routine. The parish focuses on Stewardship twice a year, which is a good thing. But there is also a value in being reminded of some of the ways Stewardship can deepen our spirituality on a regular basis. The bulletin will begin to feature little reminders and reflections on how Stewardship is being experienced here in the parish. And now that we have passed the frenzy of Christmas, it is the season to meet with many of the vital committees of the parish. This week I meet with the Pastoral Council. Next week is the Finance Committee. I also created a new Youth Board to help address the issues of youth ministry in the parish. One of the days I was snowed in at the house I tackled a monumental project. I tried matching up tops and bottoms to all my plastic containers in the kitchen. How does it happen that you can acquire so many pieces that do not fit together? It is one of the great mysteries of life. I have only been in the house six months, but I threw out about 2 dozen mismatched pieces. I think one of my New Year s resolutions will be to always clean my plate so I have nothing to save. 3

4 YOUTH MINISTRY The Life Teen Band, Core & Teens would like to thank the Parish of the Holy Cross for their support at our concert last weekend. It was a wonderful sharing of praise and worship of our Lord! The Teens and Core welcome and celebrate the arrival of our new Coordinator of Youth Ministries, Sal Finocchiaro! January Calendar 1/12-5pm Youth Mass followed by another fun Life Night. Teens, don t forget to bring a friend! 1/19 - There will not be a 5pm Mass due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. 1/26-5pm Youth Mass followed by a Life Night. 5 PARISH OUTREACH HEIFER CORNER Thanks to your generosity, our Kevin Bacon quarters are adding up once again. We thought we would use some of this money for Heifer s Educate and Empower Young Women program. Girls in third world countries often suffer the most from gender discrimination. They are frequently denied the opportunity to go to school because resources are limited and they are needed to help at home. This program provides a family with training and livestock so they can earn the income needed to pay for their daughter s school fees and supplies. This donation: Empowers girls and young women through education Equips them with books, paper and other learning materials Provides for their tuition and other school expenses We are sending $550 which will allow 2 girls the chance to be educated and fulfill their potentials. My father only let me go to school up until the second grade. There wasn t a school here; we just had to take care of animals and plant crops. I don t want my children to be like me.
