3 The Christmas Season Concludes with Father Michael Today is the Baptism of the Lord, which is the final day in the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord. A great big thank you to one and all; our Christmas collection was remarkable this year. When we hit the total button it came to almost $41,000 including the donations for flowers. While I don t know if this is an all time record for the parish, it is several thousand dollars more than the past few years. The generosity of so many enables us to maintain our programs and services. This is evidence that many people see Holy Cross as their spiritual home and will make the sacrifice to support us in our ministry. Thank you! It was very noticeable the winter paid us a visit this week. We all felt the bitter cold temperatures and saw the unexpected dusting of snow. As everyone knows, the winter months go hand in hand with cold season. In particular, this also seems to be a particularly bad season for the flu. Because of this, there are some people who are reluctant to shake hands at the Sign of Peace. Please do not take it personally if someone near you does not extend his or her hand. Another person can be acknowledged with eye contact, a bow of the head, or a gentle wave. Also, please refrain from receiving from the chalice if you are feeling or demonstrating any signs of illness. A healthy parish is a happy parish. This week I took my spiritual act on the road. Catholic Charities invited me to offer a day of prayer and reflection for the coordinators and volunteers of Parish Outreach Ministry and St. Vincent de Paul. The day was held at St. Joseph Renewal Center in Brentwood. There were almost 100 participants, which made for a very uplifting day. The theme for the day was tied in to the celebration of the Epiphany. I spoke about understanding the gifts God has given to us and how we are called to share those gifts with one another. I m not sure what is happening, but if you regularly attend the 11:30 Mass you have noticed that since the beginning of December we have been in overflow mode every week. It is energizing to see the church so full of people. It is encouraging to have so many people attend. I pray that the gift of the Eucharist and the spirit of our parish may keep everyone coming back week after week. I am heartbroken. In my Christmas homily I referred to a neat little magnetic clip that holds eyeglasses. I saw this new little invention on TV, and I thought it was the greatest thing. Unfortunately, I have already lost it. I have not given up all hope as I regularly misplace all kinds of stuff. I have my novena going to St. Anthony who often helps me find things that I have misplaced. 3

4 YOUTH GROUP NEWS The Youth Group would like to thank Bonappetito Pizzeria for helping the youth program with lunch last Sunday! 1/11/15 - Youth Night from 6-8PM. We are going to have a great time, so don t forget to bring a friend! 1/18/15 - Join us at the 11:30AM Mass. There will not be a Youth Night due to the Martin Luther King holiday. 1/25/15 - Youth Night from 6-8PM: Praise & Worship Also, the Youth Group is having a Spring Retreat March 20th - 22nd! All Teens who are in grades 9-12 and have made their Confirmation are invited to attend! Please come join the Youth Group in these events as we learn and grow closer to Christ! COMMUNITY NEWS St. Patrick School, Smithtown OPEN HOUSE Sunday, January 25th 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm A Catholic education cultivates the whole person. Living in Faith Growing in Character PARISH OUTREACH HEIFER CORNER As we begin a New Year, we renew our parish s commitment to Heifer International. We began our support of this organization in April 2004, with the purchase of our first pig. In the ten years since then, we have donated funds for countless animals; we purchased an Ark, we supported numerous projects for clean water supplies and agricultural development, and we have helped finance women s empowerment programs. In all, thanks to your generous contributions, we have donated over $36,000 in the past 10 years!!! In honor of one of the idioms Heifer was founded upon Not a cup, but a cow, we are sending $500 for the purchase of a cow. Somewhere in this world, there will be children who will have a glass of milk everyday thanks to you! Keep those quarters coming! We are building God s kingdom one quarter at a time! 4

5 THE POPE IS COMING! RELIGIOUS FREEDOM It s official, Pope Francis will be attending The World Meeting of Families being held in Philadelphia September 22 through 28, The Diocese of Rockville Centre will be participating in this historic event and has made arrangements for families in our diocese to attend. Questions and concerns can be addressed to Ellen Fox at ext. 12. TELECARE Annual Telethon It s Telecare Telethon Time! The Telethon is the weekend of Saturday, January 17 th from 2PM to 10PM and Sunday, January 18 th from 12PM to 10PM. Please tune in on Cablevision channel 29/137 or Verizon FiOS channel 296 to support our Diocesan Television Station. It will be 18 hours filled with many guest stars including many of the clergy, religious and dedicated lay people of our Diocese. Additionally, visits from some celebrity chefs, musical groups and New York sports teams will help fuel the enjoyment. LET FREEDOM RING Today, January 11th, is Religious Freedom Sunday, a joint project of Gateways to Better Education and the Alliance Defending Freedom. Gateways mission is to help students and teachers know their civil liberties. Said Eric Buehrer, President of Gateways, We want our young people to be bold in their faith.
