1 THIS WEEK AT FPC WORSHIP SCHEDULE November 25, 2018 Scripture Lesson: Acts 11: :15 a.m. Sunday School 10:30 a.m. Worship Service Sunday Worship NEWS Sermon Title: The Lord Was With Them Rev. Joel T. Moore, Associate Pastor During the 10:30 a.m. Worship Service the congregation will sing the following praise songs: All The People Said Amen, Forever, He Is Exalted, We Will Glorify and God Be With You. The praise team will sing What A Beautiful Name during the Offertory. God Be With You In 1880, Dr. Jeremiah Rankin, Pastor of First Congregational Church in Washington, D.C., was looking for a farewell hymn to close the worship service. Blest Be the Tie That Binds was a possibility, but he wanted something less formal more engaging.

2 Not finding the hymn he was looking for, he set out to write it. He took a dictionary from his bookshelf, and began looking at words such as farewell and goodbye to see if they would spark his imagination. The definition that he found for goodbye included the words God be with you and so a hymn was born. Dr. Rankin wrote a verse and chorus for his new hymn, and sent them to two people asking for a tune. He chose the tune written by William Tomer, a part-time church musician, and was so enthusiastic that he sat down and wrote seven more verses. Ira Sankey, the music director for Dwight L. Moody, learned of the hymn and began using it as a closing hymn in Moody s evangelistic services, popularizing it worldwide. God Be With You is a simple hymn that uses a good deal of repetition throughout. Perhaps that is part of its charm. It is like a simple prayer words from the heart expressing again and again the lovely sentiment, God be with you till we meet again. 3 Wednesday, November 28 from 5:30 to 7:00 in the evening. Please plan to join us for an evening of crafting, dinner, and fellowship as we enter into the Advent Season. We will be making ornaments to decorate the children s Christmas tree in the Commons. Spaghetti dinner will be served at 5:45 with a $5.00 suggested donation. Dinner proceeds will go towards the youth ski trip fund. We will finish the evening in the Commons lighting the Christmas tree and singing songs. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES: The classes meet in the following rooms: Knox Calvin - Rm. 107, Genesis Class Rm. 207, and the Forum Class Rm THE KNOX CALVIN CLASS is using the study Believe, a follow-up study after The Story. Editor Randy Frazee urges us to be living the story of the Bible to become like Jesus. Matthew 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. We will examine topics like What do I believe? What should I do? And who am I becoming? We will have a book, a study guide and videos to promote our study. All adults are welcome. THE FORUM SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS is currently studying To Live Is Christ, To Die Is Gain a book and a RightNow Media video presentation series on Paul s Letter to the Philippians. Matt Chandler, Teaching Pastor at The Village Church in Dallas is the author and presenter. The Forum welcomes all adults who would like to participate in this study. THE GENESIS CLASS is a RightNow Media video presentation series on James. Francis Chan is the presenter.

4 MEN S BIBLE STUDY The Community-wide Men s Bible Study meets on Wednesday mornings at 6:45 a.m., in Rm All men in the church are welcome to attend. WOMEN OF THE WORD (WOW) 12:00 p.m., in Rm. 107 They will begin meeting on January 8, 2019 WOMEN S IN DEPTH STUDY (WID) The WID group meets on Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. in Rm.107 Come crochet, enjoy fellowship, laughter and have bible study while you re at it! We will welcome anyone who already knows how to crochet and anyone who would like to learn how to crochet! Our goal is to make warm beanies for Terry Mikeska to take to Nepal, to have beanies for the patrons of the Soup Kitchen and Project Dignidad. If you are presently one who crochets, bring your gear and join us! We will have the necessary supplies on hand to share with newbies! Call the church office FMI, NEW! YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY 18/29 BIBLE STUDY meets on Thursdays, from 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. at Liz & Devin Bates pool house. This is geared toward those young people in college, trade school, grad school, recent college grad or just a young adult not over the age of 29! They will meet for dinner, time spent in the Word and fellowship. This group will be led by Pollyanna & Steve Stephens. OPPORTUNITIES: WESLEY DAILY BREAD SOUP KITCHEN Try something new and help out at the Soup Kitchen! If you have never helped or it has been a long time our next time to serve is Monday, November 26, let Susan know if you would like to volunteer. The Wesley Trinity Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is located at 301 W. 18th St. Plan to arrive by 9:00 a.m. and stay till 1:00 p.m. It s a wonderful way to serve God by serving others and getting to know some of the members of your church family at the same time! We serve on the fourth Monday of every month.

5 PROJECT DIGNIDAD Project Dignidad is a local food pantry long supported by this church. For December: Boxed cereal, peanut butter, jelly, saltines, mac & cheese, canned meat, canned soups, cake mixes, canned frosting, & canned fruit RUST STREET MINISTRIES Rust Street Ministries provides help with basic needs and life skills, at no charge, to those living in the San Angelo area. Their programs are designed to serve the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical needs of our community by providing temporary assistance with food, clothing, household items and furniture. Right now they are in need of coats of all sizes especially children, but the adults need them too, men's pants and jeans. They will have people asking for adult bicycles. They also have requests for full and queen size beds. YOUTH FELLOWSHIP meets Sundays at 5:30 p.m., in the Youth Center. The youth will eat supper and then have Bible study. They will be using the study Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Life s Storms by Tim Tebow. Wednesday Agape Feast Chili, Grated Cheese, Fritos, Jar of Jalapeños, Fresh Fruit, Dessert Items needed: 25lbs Chili Meat, Grated Cheese, 6 bags of Fritos, Jar of Jalapeños, Fresh Fruit, Dessert Contact Lacy Allison if you would like to help out! AGAPE FEAST: Our ministry to area high school students, the Wednesday Agape Feast free lunch, takes place at 12:30 p.m. in our Youth Center. The lunch is being redesigned to encourage participation throughout our church family in providing the weekly sustenance to the young people. Cooking teams of 2 or more are encouraged to sign up to provide the Wednesday lunch. Or, you could team up with others to defray the expense of a lunch you might want to purchase for the very hungry high school kids! 6 DINNERS FOR EIGHT (nine or ten): The evening of Sunday, December 2, has been set aside for members of our church to gather in one another s homes for food, fun and fellowship. Signup sheets are hanging on the East wall of the Commons, just as you enter the gym. As folks sign-up they indicate if they d like to be a host, then after the sign-up closes people will be put into groups to go to the various host homes. This is a fun way to get acquainted with new people in your church family! Poinsettias can be ordered from the church office or by filling out one of the poinsettia cards and placing it in the offering tray. The cards are located in the front of each pew. They are $8.00 per plant. The plants can be ordered for personal use or to be placed in the Sanctuary in honor or memory of someone. Plants will also be taken to our shut-ins. SING! AN IRISH CHRISTMAS FEATURING KEITH & KRISTYN GETTY SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8 TH AT 6:30 P.M. Sing! An Irish Christmas featuring Keith & Kristyn Getty December 8 th, :30 PM First Presbyterian Church, 32 N. Irving, San Angelo Known for carols and modern hymns such as "In Christ Alone," the Gettys are joined on their 8 th annual tour by their band of virtuosic instrumentalists fusing Celtic, Bluegrass, Americana, Modern and Classical music along with cultural dance and the choral sounds of the holiday.

7 Join us for an evening that unites tradition and innovation in a vibrant celebration of the season! Tickets are available on the Special Events tab of the FPC website ( Ticket cost is $20 with proceeds to benefit House of Faith and Project Dignidad. If you passed through the Commons you might have seen our recently built Little Free Pantry. The Little Free Pantry Program provides access to non-perishable items to those in need within our community. Our fellow downtown church, First United Methodist Church, has one that sits in front of their courtyard and they keep it stocked Monday through Friday. We are going to start out trying to keep ours stocked Saturday and Sunday, if we can generate enough interest in the project. There is additional information on the table in the Commons for you to read. Also, there is a sign-up sheet if you are interested in helping with our Little Free Pantry program.
