1 Barry Good News! Carol Studebaker, Editor June 1, 2016 Church Office: Join us for Sunday Worship! 8:30 - First Worship Service 9:45 am - Sundays School classes for children and adults 11:00 - Second Worship Service Wednesday Bible Study 6:00 pm office@barrychristianchurch.com Barry Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1840 Honor God, Seek Christ, Serve Others Together Staff Senior Minister: Rev. Dr. Dennis Patience dennispatience@gmail.com Family Life Director: Jim Frentrop - Jim.frentrop@gmail.com Director of Music: Vigthor Zophoniasson - vigthor@gmail.com Organist: Jacob Hofeling - Jacob.hofeling@gmail.com Administrative Secretary: Carol Studebaker - office@barrychristianchurch.com Ponderings of Patience A Step Forward for the Young Among Us I believe all of us would agree that we have been blessed with the addition of several younger children and youth in the fellowship of Barry Christian Church over the last several months. They bless us with their laughter and energetic vitality during our Children s Moment on Sunday mornings, in Sunday School, in the nursery and during the course of many other fellowship experiences in the life of our congregation. As the youngest among us continue to mature through childhood, youth and into adulthood, I believe all of us feel the burden to offer exceptional nurture and opportunities for them to experience the presence and knowledge of the living Lord Jesus Christ. All of us offer our children and youth valuable expressions of Christ s love by our fellowship and by the Christ-like example we strive to uphold. But I believe all of us agree that we yearn to offer the youngest among us, tangible and meaningful knowledge of the truths of God s presence in daily living. We are blessed by the genuine care and Christian education opportunities that our faithful nursery attendants, Children s church leaders and Sunday School Class teachers offer our children every Sunday morning and at special events, but I believe that all of us yearn for the day when we at Barry Christian Church are able to have a fulltime director of children s and youth ministries that can help us offer broader Christian Education opportunities for the youngest among us. Although we realize that a full-time children s and youth ministry leader is not something we can presently afford to offer, I believe we all will agree that this is a number one goal we would like to achieve. To this end, a number of endeavors will be pursued in hopes that we can achieve this goal in the future. First, our Board Chairperson, Kimberly Pukay, is assembling a Children s and Youth Ministry Exploration Task Force to explore how similar positions are working in other churches in the Northland and to formulate a job description and a competitive employment package. Second, there will be monthly promotional moments in worship to raise awareness of the endeavor to one day have a full-time staff person for children and youth ministries. Testimonies will be shared about how church experiences at an early age greatly affected the spiritual growth and commitment to Christ of many among us as we also begin to keep a monthly tab and report on the progress of our church s monthly contributions. (continued on page 2)

2 Page 2 (Ponderings of Patience, continued from front page) Third, this coming September and October, our Stewardship Committee will begin sponsoring annual Stewardship Campaigns to educate our congregation about the Biblical principles of tithing and stewardship and fourth, the Stewardship Committee will keep tabs on how our finances are progressing to determine when our congregation may be able to support such a position. If a family has the desire to purchase a newer home or a car, there needs to first be an intentional effort to see if the family can afford to do so. Savings needs to be accumulated for a down payment and then a family has to determine if they have the means and discipline to make the required monthly payments. The same sound stewardship principles apply to the church as well. Rather than simply talking or dreaming of a solid children s and youth ministry program, we first need to rally around the goal. Then we need to aspire toward savings for start-up funds similar to a down payment and finally as our congregation continues to grow, we can monitor our financial progress to determine when we will be soundly capable of affording the monthly expenses necessary for a full-time children s and youth ministry position. We all know that every child has to take that first baby step before they make the leap from being an infant, to a toddler, to a child, a youth and eventually an adult. That very first step that parents and others so eagerly anticipate and gleefully record and talk about is profoundly essential for a successful journey! In like fashion, our congregation presently needs to take that first baby step toward commitment to our children and youth, as we ultimately strive to provide the best we can for our children and youth through this campaign: A Step Forward for the Young Among Us At our May Board Meeting the leadership of Barry Christian Church gave their voice of approval to the aspirations described in this article. But if anyone has questions or comments about these endeavors, me, or our Board Chairman, Kimberly Pukay, our vice Chairperson, Lana Whitton, or any of our other church leaders would be delighted to hear your comments. Blessings to each of you as we strive to make a Step Forward for the Young Among Us! Pastor Dennis We wish a fond farewell and thanks to Vigthor Zophoniasson and his wonderful family, Ashley & Brimi as they finished their time here at Barry Christian Church after 3 wonderful years! They have blessed us with their lovely spirits and God given talents in working with the church through the ministry of music and song. We wish them all God s blessings in their future work! They will be greatly missed. Vigthor will be serving as Music Director at Christ s Church Anglican in Overland Park, Kansas near their home.

4 Page 4 As we lift our hearts in prayer, dear Lord, may we receive all the benefits of your grace In our thoughts and prayers Donna Moore Brandon Ralston Billy Stevens Helena Edwards Harold Roberts Family Andy Jones There s a wonderful book in the Bible that s chocked full of advice. The Book of Proverbs was written somewhere around 1000 BC. (If you care to do the math, that s about 3000-and-a-few years ago). But much of the wisdom of Proverbs is still valid today. Proverbs is an assortment of wise sayings relating spiritual truths and common sense, and giving instruction concerning every conceivable area of human life. That s a lot of advice folks! And we can t tackle all of it at once. So here s a little snippet, which I have adopted as my personal mission statement as a youth leader Proverbs 22:6 (NIV) says: Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Another interpretation is from the NCV version, which says: Train children to live the right way, and when they are old, they will not stray from it. Emma Edwards Family Michael Davis Joshua Jacobo Attendance Sunday May1 1st service nd service Total Sunday School 75 Sunday - May 8 1st service nd service Total Sunday School - 79 Sunday May 15 1st service nd service 103 Total Sunday School -? Sunday May 22 1st service nd service Total Sunday School -? So what is this right way to raise a child? What is this way he/she should go? Let s consider how the more literal Hebrew text reads: Start a child according to the child s way so that when they re grown they won t stray from it. Note this translation says the child s way, not the parent s way. In other words, if we encourage our children to start on the road that is right for THEM, and raise them in such a way as to emphasize THEIR special, God-given disposition, talents, and gifts then once they re grown they will not stray from these ways. In future newsletter articles I will be writing about ways to help our children discover what their special, God-given disposition, talents, and gifts might be. Until then, please ponder how we might guide our children toward the path that s right for them! Blessings, Jim New Lighting in Chancel Area of Sanctuary! A special word of thanks needs to be extended to our Property Chairman, Tom Bosworth and electrician, Brad Harris, who accomplished the rather precarious task on Thursday evening and Friday morning, April 28th and 29th, of installing new lighting in the high and steeply pitched ceiling of the chancel portion of the sanctuary. This is a task that has been needed for a lengthy period of time to get the choir, organist, music director, pastor and others serving in worship out of the darkness in into God s marvelous light (I Peter 2:9b). Tom and Brad are pictured with the lift they used to accomplish the task. Thank you!
