So in celebration of the Christmas Season, I thought everyone might enjoy the following story behind the story. Possibly it is something you could share with family and friends during the celebrated season of Christ s birth! Or maybe it could be a trivia question: What was the title of the book Charles Dickens wrote about Jesus that he only shared with his children? Charles Dicken s classic, A Christmas Carol, is often shared in family readings or watched on television during the Christmas Season. Yet, most people don t know that Dickens wrote another story that he shared with his children at Christmas time. For he loved the Lord Jesus and wrote a small book titled, The Life of Our Lord. As a believer in Christ, Dickens read this story aloud to his children every Christmas and he strictly forbade the publication of his hand written story during his own lifetime and begged his sister-in-law, Georgina Hogarth, to make sure that the Dickens family would never even hand the manuscript, or a copy of it, to anyone to take out of the house. His handwritten manuscript was passed down to Georgina Hogarth after Charles Dickens died in Upon her death in 1917 the manuscript came into the possession of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens who was the last surviving son of Charles Dickens. The Dickens family continued to read the story every Christmas and as Charles Dickens requested, publication was delayed until the last of his children had died. The story is a rather simple account of the life and teachings of Jesus and throughout the book, there are occasional touches of Dickens humor such as: You never saw a locust, because they belong to that country near Jerusalem, which is a great way off. So do camels, but I think you have seen a camel. At all events, they are brought over here, sometimes; and if you would like to see one, I will show you one. Indicative of the Victorian era, there are also some comments to which people today may take offense as he adds personal comments of his perception of Jewish people. But despite these comments that reflect the culture of Dicken s era, the balance of the book focuses on the miracles Jesus performed and on the lessons of charity, forgiveness, and compassion through which people from any generation in time can learn, much in the spirit of Dickens s most famous work: A Christmas Carol. In his will upon is death in 1933, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens indicated that if the majority of his family were in favor of publication, The Life of Our Lord should be given to the world. So by a majority vote Sir Henry s widow and children decided to publish the book in London. In the United States it was first published in serial form in newspapers in March of It was then published by Simon & Schuster that same year and became one of the year s biggest bestsellers. Charles Dickens s original manuscript was purchased by a group of private collectors in 1964 and then presented to the Free Library of Philadelphia, which has held it ever since. If you would like to send them greetings, you can them at: dankatmail1938@gmail.com CONOR HENRY Co-Chairs Youth with Vision The young advocacy members of Youth With Vision (YWV) were honored with the 2015 Coalition of the Year award Nov. 18 at the State Prevention Conference held at the Four Seasons Hotel & Resort in the Lake of the Ozarks. YWV Co-chairs Conor Henry of North Kansas City High School (pictured on right) and Jordan Elder of Park Hill High School accepted the honor. The extensive criteria to earn the award included the demonstration of community and media outreach and advocacy, as well as continued efforts in education and training. The membership of Youth With Vision is composed of middle and high school students from Clay, Platte and Ray counties.

P a g e 5 The Youth Group will hold a Fellowship Dinner Fundraiser on Sunday, January 3rd right after morning services to raise money for the group to attend Winter Jam on Sunday, January 24, Your free will offering will help the youth group raise the funds for this exciting yearly event. If you are interested in joining with the group and would like to attend this annual Christian music concert at the Sprint Center, tickets are $40 which includes: early entry, a t-shirt and lanyard. In the first chapter Dickens writes intimately, My dear children, I am very anxious that you should know something about the history of Jesus Christ. For everybody ought to know about him. So you see, the author who made Scrooge come alive, knew more importantly that Jesus is the Christ in Christmas! And in our time in which it often appears that artists of notoriety seldom have a genuine interest in sharing a personal faith in Jesus Christ with their families, Charles Dicken s earnest and ongoing desire to share the story of Christ s life with his children, should inspire Christian believers of any generation to eagerly share the story of our Lord Jesus with others!
