Beginning with the week of Sunday, September 10th and continuing for six weeks until Sunday, October 15th we will use the book, The Prodigal God written by Timothy Keller, the pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian If this study of the Parable of the Prodigal Son Church in Manhattan, as a catalyst for an in depth proves to be beneficial to the congregation, we hope study of this parable. to offer similar models of sermons and study on other Biblical subjects such as the 23rd Psalm, The Lord s Prayer, the Beatitudes, the Sermon on the During the Sunday morning sermons, I will touch on Mount, the Ten Commandments or possibly more a particular theme of the parable that will be exparables of Jesus. plored that week. On Sunday mornings the Sunday Bulletin will include a flyer that you can fill out and place in the offering plate with a check for $10 (Memo: Prodigal God Book) if you would like for us to order Timothy Keller s book for you. Or please stop by the church office and fill out a form and give a check to Carol. The deadline for submitting your request will be Thursday, August 31 st. If you have any questions please feel free to give us a call through the following avenues: Carol at the Church Office at or office@barrychristianchurch.com; Jennifer Marsh at or jenmarsh2014@gmail.com; or contact Pastor Dennis at or dennispatience@gmail.com. We hope this study will be beneficial to everyone s faith journey as we remember that Paul encourages Timothy by writing: Do your best to win full approval in God s sight, as a worker who is not ashamed of his work, one who correctly teaches the message of God s truth (II Timothy 1:15). Pastor Dennis The Kononia Class enjoyed a meal together at Loco Grill & Cantina on Monday, August 21st! There were about 25 Barry Christian Church friends that enjoyed great food and fellowship.

3 Page 3 In Psychology class we were taught a number of theories of development. The one that I like best is Erik Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Stages. Erikson listed eight stages of development, that range from babyhood through older adulthood. For example, a two-year-old child is in the stage called "Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt", which says that children learn to be self-sufficient in activities such as feeding, walking, talking, and using the bathroom. They either learn to accomplish these things independently, or if not, they feel shame and begin to doubt their abilities. Teenagers live in the stage of "Identity vs. Role Confusion", where they try to figure out "who am I", and either establish an identity or face confusion about what roles to play. Young adults experience the stage Intimacy vs. Isolation. And then, there s the stage we middle-age adults encounter--"generativity vs. Stagnation". Erikson believed we middle-aged adults contribute to the next generation through meaningful work, creative activities, and/or raising a family or we stagnate. Think about the meaning of the word stagnate. To become stale. Sluggish. Foul. Dull. Doesn't sound very attractive. I made a decision about ten years ago to return to grad school and take on a new career working with children and families. I had a strong yearning to avoid stagnation, and to leave behind something meaningful for the next generation. One thing that is meaningful to me is my relationship with Jesus Christ. I can't think of anything more meaningful to pass along to the children of Barry Christian Church. So, how about you? Wouldn't you rather leave behind something meaningful for the next generation, and not become stagnant? I spent a lot of years trying to figure out how to do this, and through my work with the children of Barry Christian Church I believe I found a way to add some meaning to life. And I would love to share that opportunity with you. Simply join us on Sunday mornings, by being a helper in Sunday School or Children's Church. You don't need any special skills or education, simply a love for God, and for children. There are sign-up sheets on the table in the foyer, or you can contact me by phone or if you have any questions about how you might help. Remember, you aren't just helping us get through another hour at church. You are helping us leave behind something meaningful for the next generation. And you are helping fulfill your own human need to feel "generative", as opposed to "stagnant". I would love to have you join us in this life-altering experience! But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:14-15) Peace, Jim
