Our mission is to be a beacon of God s love in our world by fully honoring God in all we do, humbly serving others however we are able and to seek to grow and share our faith in Jesus Christ, together. Last Sunday, October 5, we started our new early 8:30 am service with 57 attending, including 2 or 3 new folks. Our second service (10:30 am) had nearly 100. Combined this was as much as last Easter. Our new Family Life Director, Jim Frentrop, began working with the Christian Education Committee. He reveals many exciting plans and activities for our church. Sunday evening I was so excited to experience the Fall Festival and Picnic at Don and Judy Thomas farm. What fun to ride in a hay wagon to the picnic area and to see all the interesting antique autos, tractors and old fire trucks. I can see why so many children and families turned out for the event. The food was marvelous and the outdoor setting was perfect. Thanks to the Thomas and everyone for a delightful evening. The evening was topped with the Royals winning a sweep over the Angels 8 to 3. Two other special fall events include the Jazz Concert and Annual Turkey Dinner. Our church will host the Northland 5 Star Jazz Band on Sunday afternoon, October 19 at 3:00 pm. The well known Jazz band is directed by Bob Drummond and has 30 young people from ages 12 to 21. The public and visitors are welcome to this premium event. The event is free, however a free will offering will be taken with proceeds going to help purchase a Personal Energy Transportation for a child without legs. Our big special fall event is the Annual Turkey Dinner which goes back to 1940 tradition. That was the year that a few young adults stepped forward and saved Barry Christian Church from closing during the war years. Having lived in the Northland the past 25 years, I have heard of this Annual Turkey Dinner. It will be November 6 th & 7 th from 4 to 8 pm. The proceeds will be used to help Barry with it s projects and ministries. This year, buy a Turkey Dinner Ticket and GIVE to a friend or family member as a gift. By your example and action, your witness to our faith and church, things are looking up at Barry. Sincerely, Pastor Bob

3 From a newspaper article of 1950: FROM ALLAN HURST Turkey Dinner of 1950 P a g e 3 The 2-day turkey dinner and bazaar at Barry Christian church culmination of nearly a year s work by the Ladies Aid of the church will be held Wednesday, November 15, and Thursday, November 16. Four hundred and twenty-five pounds of turkey have been ordered to provide a typical Thanksgiving feast for the annual affair. Serving will begin at 4 p.m. to continue until 9:30 or 10 p.m. daily. The Ladies Aid hopes that the attendance of 700 last year will be exceeded. The bazaar will feature a wide variety of items, made at Ladies Aid meetings and at the home of the members. There will be three quilts, embroidered pillow cases, crocheted scarves, a quantity of decorated dish towels and pot holders. A food table will feature baked goods of every kind, candies, canned goods and preserves. A crocheted tablecloth by Mrs. Nonnie Elam of the community also will be sold. The dinner will be held in the basement and the bazaar on the upper floor of the church. To facilitate parking, the space back of the church has been graveled. Other room in the church yard and at the curbs will be available. A follow-up article appeared in the same newspaper after the event: A total of 975 persons attended the tenth annual 2-night dinner and bazaar at the Christian church of the Barry community. About 550 person attended Wednesday and 425 last night. History of Barry Christian Church as Remembered by Lois Berry In the early 1940 the old white church stood tall and proud even if she was old she was beautiful. Her doors were always open to anyone to come in, look around and sit awhile. In 1940 they were about to close her doors for the last time there was only about $2.72 in general funds. A light bill was due, heating oil bill to be paid and the minister s salary to be met. The ladies of the Lady Aid got together to see what they could do to save the church. They decided to have a dinner and charge for it. Most of them had chicken, green beans, cabbage for slaw, potatoes and all could make pies. They brought their everyday dishes, silverware, pots and pans from home. Church benches were used for chairs, men made tables out of boards. Water was carried from across the road from the Public Well for coffee, tea and to wash dishes. Men washed dishes in the belfry. It was such a big success they decided to do it the next year. They paid all the bills and had some money left over. The next year they added a bazaar. The ladies embroidered pillowcases, tea towels, dresser scarves, made aprons, pot holders and so on. That s how the Turkey Dinner and Bazaar got started. The fellowship was good, people started coming back to church, new ones started coming. About 1948 the Ladies Aid gave the church $300 for a basement. The men got together to put a basement under the church. Some machines were used but most was dug by hand. A big job, but with work and planning they did it. With the new basement, the church now had a dining hall, a kitchen with a stove, oven, refrigerator and a deep fridge as well as running water and even two restrooms. Dishes, a coffee pit, silverware and pots and pans were purchased in preparation for a lot of Turkey Dinners to come. In 1950, Memie Henderson died and left the church $16,000. It was time for the old white church to go as she had served the community well. A new brick church was built over the foundation of the old church. One day at turkey dinner time a farmer came by the church with 5 or 6 bushels of turnips and asked if they could use them. The ladies decided to cook and serve them at the turkey dinner. The turnips were such a big hit that they have been served every year since. The brick church was taken down around 1986 to make room for a bigger better church.

4 P a g e 4 A message from our Family Life Director Jim Frentrop What an honor to serve the families of Barry Christian Church! Growing up here at Barry was an awesome experience, and to give back to my church in such a meaningful way is a true joy. A few Sundays ago I said a few words about this mission, and I would like to reiterate them here. My role is not only to support the current youth and children s ministries it is also to begin a service of inreach, a term I derived by changing the prefix of outreach. By inreach, I mean to reach inward, and begin to develop opportunities for the church to support, and minister to, the families within. Many churches have a Family Life ministry of some sort a brief search of the internet will reveal a wide variety of programs, complete with a mission and vision statement. What should be the mission and vision of a Family Life ministry at Barry? That s where you come in--you tell me! What are some of the unmet needs of our families? How can the church help? I am here to listen. I need your thoughts. I will be writing more in upcoming newsletters, and starting next week I will share some thoughts that might spark an idea or two. In the meantime, I would like to share, as I did several Sundays ago, one of my favorite scriptures: Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as you are doing (I Thes 5:11). Please be thinking about some of the needs in your own family, and how Barry Christian Church might help you meet those needs, through a Family Life ministry. Breathe peacefully, and please be well In Christian Love, Jim Frentrop Kansas City's Youth Bringin' Back the Sounds of Big Band, Swing, and Jazz 5 Star Jazz Band October 3:00 pm 5 Star Jazz Band is a non-profit community band dedicated to providing Kansas City's top young musicians, age 12-21, the unique opportunity to perform in a professional-caliber jazz ensemble.
