1 INSIDE INFORMATION Pastor Steven Men s Ministry Operation Christmas Child 8:30 am Music Minister Vital Statistics Note from Kay Shelby August Calendar Women s Ministry VBS Director Message August Birthdays The August Business Meeting has been Scheduled for August 6:00 pm El Salvador s Santa Ana national park has many dormant & extinct volcanos. While visiting the park a pastor took us up on the side of one of the biggest extinct volcanos. As we reached the top there was an old resort hotel. It was obvious that the hotel at one point was a very nice and expensive place to stay. By this time however, nature had begun to take over again. The owners had placed picnic tables as well as play areas for kids under the massive trees. As we approached the hotel, it was clear that the building was not being used. I began to wonder why it was there in the first place? It wasn t easy to reach and, other than being on the side of this extinct volcano, it made no sense. After exiting our vehicle, a pastor lead us around the hotel onto a veranda. We could see that it overlooked a dark, black, dormant volcano. The pastor began to tell us that when the resort was built, the volcano was active and had lava continually streaming down the sides. There was a great expectation of making a large sum of money for many years once the resort was opened, but one month after completion, the lava stopped flowing. As a result, the resort shut down a few short years later. If you enter into my office, you will see a picture of this dormant volcano. It s not pretty; it s the only picture that is vertical, the rest are horizontal. I like this picture because it reminds me that my plans are not always God s plans. Proverbs 3:5 and 6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Pastor Steven pastor.steven@sbcglobal.net The Mission of HSBC Honor God s Truth Share the Gospel Build Believers Care for Others As we continue to search for our Associate Pastor Please pray that the right candidate will be led to us and that they answer the call. 1 Community happens in circles, not rows. There s a small group for everyone, regardless of age. Join a small group today. Contact: Pam Barnett, Sunday Morning Small Groups Director, , pjbarnett@cableone.net.
2 HSBC Men s Ministry s purpose is to equip and encourage our men to live for God by connecting with each other around God s word. We will: * Honor Christ * Strengthen our Families * Build a lasting community of believers based on biblical principles & teachings Check the Men s Ministry FB Page to stay up to date on all activities of the ministry, and to stay connected to other men of our church. Saturday August 4th 8:00 a.m. Rosie s Northtown Cafe Contact: Doug Athon, Twin Pines 9:30 am Kirksville Manor Care Sunday, April 1, 2:30 pm ITEM OF THE MONTH: Now is a great time to buy school supplies at a discounted price. Stock up to be ready to pack your Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes in October! You can also donate items for our packing party by leaving them in the OCC plastic bin in the foyer. Vital Signs Year to Date (June 30, 2018) Budgeted Offering: $185, Received Offering: $155, Budget Expenses: $142, Bldg Fund Offering YTD: $3, YTD Average Attendance: 8:30 a.m. Worship: 86 11:00 a.m. Worship: 131 Worship Total: 216 Sunday Morning Small Groups: Once again it is that time of year a time for new beginnings. School? You might ask. No! It is time for the beginning of a new choir season. Each August the choir gears up for another year of specials and cantatas. The Christmas Cantata has arrived, and the fall choir special dates are set. All we need are people willing to devote 90 minutes of their Sunday evenings for choir rehearsal. You do not need to have a great voice to sing in the choir because with many voices blending together, the sound produced is greater than the sum of its participants. Rehearsals are fun but productive and our current members are very supportive of each other. Singing in the choir adds both to the corporate worship as well as the personal worship. Choir specials bring both a variety of music styles to the service that hymns alone do not provide, but also a message of their own to ponder. For the personal worship, taking part in worship experiences beyond that of sitting in the pews and listening to others adds to the depth of the worship experience. Remember, worship is an active experience, not a passive one. So, join us Sunday, August 12, at 4:30 p.m. and be a part of something greater in your Sunday worship. See you in worship! Jim Barnett, 8:30 am Music Minister , musicjim@sbcglobal.net
3 I would like to thank my church family for the wonderful reception as well as cards, gifts, and prayers for my retirement. Additionally, I would like to thank the church body for nearly 20 years of allowing me to serve God in the roles of Administrative Secretary and Treasurer. It was a joy and blessing to go to work each day. I looked forward to each week as I saw how many of us attended on Sunday and your faithfulness in giving financially. I got to watch as you grew in spiritual maturity, volunteered readily, gave sacrificially, and prayed passionately. I was privileged to witness families grow and children grow up. I was blessed to have met and served with (mostly) senior saints who are no longer with us except in fond memories. You allowed me to laugh with you and the privilege of grieving with you. Both emotions bring back meaningful memories in very different ways. I would like to specifically thank Terry Hunsaker, Scott Paris, Charles Jackson, and Steven Nelson. I can only hope our pastors enjoyed working with me half as much as I enjoyed working with them. I would also like to thank those of you who served in other staff positions, on the Personnel Committee, or other leadership roles during my tenure. Thank you for your patience as you worked with an SOOC (stubborn, opinionated, and outspoken colleague.) :) A special thanks is extended to everyone for being the pruning shears and iron rasps needed to help me become the sweet little old lady I desire to be. It has been a fun, challenging, sometimes exhausting, but always rewarding season of life with the bonus of spending eternity together in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Over the years I had the privilege of praying for you. Please allow me to continue to do so. Feel free to contact me with specific Prayer requests; none are too small or trivial. My new address and phone # are listed below. As you did for me, please continue to pray for, support, and encourage our staff. May you be blessed more than you can ask or imagine as you trust God in all circumstances. In Christ, Kay Shelby, Retiree :) cell: NEW ikshelby@gmail.com Jim Barnett Director The Senior Songsters will be preforming Southern Gospel Radio Hits at various locations around the community in August. Check the calendar on page 4 for times and locations! The purpose of the Church is to glorify God by fulfilling the Great Commandment (36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? 37Jesus replied: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22: ) and the Great Commission (18Then Jesus came to them and said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:18-20). 20). 3

5 HSBC Women's Ministry Mission: Our Women s Ministry exists to help every woman feel loved, accepted, encouraged, and equipped to pursue and grow their relationship with Jesus Christ, and to respond with gratitude for that relationship through studying His Word together, by serving others in love, and making great friends on the journey. This Fall we will be studying God's Word in two different studies and hope that you prayerfully consider joining us as we grow closer to Him and as a community. Kay Shelby will be leading a 14- week Bible study called Adorned: Living Out the Beauty of the Gospel Together by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth on Wednesday mornings at 9:00 AM starting Sep 5th. This study will be focusing on Titus 2. In the Middle of the Mess by Sheila Walsh is a six week study that will have two groups. Chassity Baker will be leading a group on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM starting September 5th. Lee Bonnel will be leading the other group on Monday evenings at 6:00 PM starting September 10th. All of the Bible study groups will be meeting at the church. We hope to see you in a group! Also, be on the lookout for announcements about a fall fellowship. Please go to our Facebook page or contact the Women's Ministry Team which consists of Chassity Baker, Sarah Mack, Tina Miller, Dana Nelson and Sue Peacock for information and updates. ~HSBC Women s Ministry Team A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped make VBS happen! I am so thankful for all of you who gave so many hours of your time. Thank you also for your prayers, your spreading the word about our VBS, and all of your food donations and monetary donations. Because of your efforts, many children and youth now better understand who Jesus is and how much He loves them. May God continue to bless our efforts and impact His kingdom.
