While the congregation is singing, the children in attendance members as well as visiting children, will be invited to come forward and with the assistance of a few adults, the children will fill a free standing, black cross with bundles of cut flowers. As the flowers transform the symbol of death into a symbol of life, the experience reiterates the scripture passage of Romans 6:4b: Just as Christ was raised from death by the glorious power of the Father, so also we might live a For an inspiring visual impact that can be experienced by everyone in worship, each cross will stand about six feet in height and will be about four feet in width. At this size it will take about 750 cut flowers to fill each cross. Flowers will be purchased ahead of time. They will be bundled in small groups the Saturday afternoon before Easter and then placed in baskets for the children to work from on Sunday morning. (continued on page 3)

Page 2 Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday Evening February 10 th at 6:30 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend this year s Ash Wednesday Service, which will be held in the sanctuary on Wednesday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of a forty day journey known as the Season of Lent. This forty day period does not include Sundays because Sundays celebrate Christ s resurrection. During the Ash Wednesday service, recipients can receive the imposition of ashes. The mark of cross is placed upon one s forehead as a sign that one acknowledges that Christ our Lord died upon the cross for our sinfulness. The mark of the cross also expresses repentance, an earnest desire to seek forgiveness of one s sinfulness and a desire toward godly living. As we mark our calendars and prepare to attend the Ash Wednesday Service, we are reminded of Simon Peter s second message in the temple courts after Pentecost when he said: Repent, then and turn to God, so that he will forgive your sins. If you do, times of spiritual strength will come from the Lord (Acts 3:19-20a). Lenten Season Midweek Meditations & Suppers in February and March Ash Wednesday begins the Season of Lent and this service is described in another article in this edition of The Barry Good News. But for the five Wednesday evenings of the Lenten Season between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week, at 6:30 p.m. each Wednesday evening, we will have a Service of Meditation and a Fellowship Supper. This will be a unique occasion for fellowship and a light supper for our congregation, and it will also be a time for us to meditate upon our journey of personal repentance as we prepare our hearts and spirits for the celebration of Christ s resurrection on Easter Sunday. We will be asking our Sunday School classes and some other service committees of the congregation to help provide the light suppers for each of the five weeks and Pastor Dennis will be preparing the meditations for each week. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Midweek Meditations and Suppers!

Maundy-Thursday Service Thursday, March 24 th at 6:30 p.m. Page 3 On Thursday, March 24 th at 6:30 p.m., we will be offering a Model Seder in celebration of the day in which Christ our Lord transformed the Passover Event into the Lord s Supper which we share in worship every Sunday morning. The Passover commemorates the passing over of the angel of death throughout the land of Egypt, proclaiming to all that the God of the Israelite people was indeed the one and only true God, superior to all the pagan gods that the Egyptian people worshiped. The Passover meal of bitter herbs, lamb meat, unleavened bread and cups of wine described in the Old Testament text of Exodus 12, commemorates how God freed the Hebrew people from Egyptian bondage and offered them a pathway to the Promised Land. On Maunday Thursday, which simply means Holy Thursday, our Model Seder in which we too will share the same food items described above, will help us understanding the meaning behind the Passover meal and help us understand how our Lord Jesus transformed this into the Lord s Supper. Several people will be needed to help with the food preparations and we will also be taking a count of those wishing to attend so we ll have enough prepared for everyone. For now, please mark your calendar and plan to attend this unique experience on Maunday Thursday, March 24 th at 6:30 p.m.! (Ponderings of Patience, continued from front page) To pay for the total of about 1500 cut flowers, we will be asking people to make donations in memory or in honor of loved ones and friends, and the final listing will be published in the Easter Sunday bulletin. We will begin the promotion of The Flowering of the Cross and the request for donations on Sunday, February 28 th with a donations form in the Sunday morning bulletins and continue this invitation through Palm Sunday, March 20 th. The forms will also be available in the March newsletter. Photos included in this edition of The Barry Good News give you a hint of what this experience looks like. Most of all though, I hope all of us at Barry Christian Church will find this to be a most meaningful and memorable way for people of all ages to participate in and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus through whom we are saved. For we find great joy in Christ s words in John 11:25-26a where he says: I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Blessings to each of you as the Season of Lent and Easter will soon be upon us and Carrie and I will soon have the joy of celebrating our one year anniversary of service with all of you! Pastor Dennis

P a g e 6 FEBRUARY EVENTS Tower of Hope for Hope House --OUTREACH Once a year we focus on collecting items for the Hope House, which provides a safety net to those suffering from abuse in the Kansas City metro area. Weaving together safety, support and hope helps give victims the ability to start a new life, free from abuse. Their needs are many, but right now they really need toilet paper, paper towels, diapers and baby wipes. We will be collecting from February 7th until February 28th. The Koinonia Dinner Out - Monday, February 15, 2016 will be at the new Asian Buffet on Barry Road. Meet there at 6:30 pm. The Koinonia Class invites you to join them on this fun outing. It is a great way to meet people from church. You just show up at the restaurant and everyone pays for their own meals. 10th Annual Stanley Otto Memorial Bean & Chilli Cook Off February 21st at NOON The entries for judging must be at the church by 9:30 sharp that morning. We need bean and chilli dishes whether you bring them for judging or just to serve. Invite your friends to this wonderful fellowship event. You will have fun tasting various food dishes where the main ingredient is beans - any kind of bean. (and yes, there will be BEANO on hand) Sign up at the table to enter your favorite bean or chilli dish. Week of Compassion Sunday Offering, February 28th Sharing brings joy to us, to others and to God. You know the joy of giving...the delight you share when your gift makes a difference in someone's life. For over 65 years, Christians in North America have changed lives with their gifts. Create more joy in the world with your generous gift to Week of Compassion GAME NIGHT Saturday, Feb 27 at 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall. Come share a snack and any games you would like to play. Playing cards for Hand & Foot, coffee, and water will be provided by the Hospitality Committee.

From the desk of Jim Frentrop, Family Life Director P a g e 7 A good problem to have. I have said that a lot lately. When I visit the nursery during any given service, and see 8 or 10 children, being cared for by 3 or 4 adults. Or when I assist in children s worship, where we often have 8 or 10 children (a few times we ve had more than 10)! It seems that lately we ve had to ask more and more people for help, as nursery attendants, Children s Church helpers, or Sunday School Buddies. The fact that we have to ask for more help lately, because our number of children is growing steadily, is indeed a good problem to have. Just a few years ago it was not uncommon to have no children in the nursery during a Sunday service. And children s worship could easily be led by one adult. In contrast, just this past Sunday, I counted 3 adults in the nursery, and another 4 in Children s Church (including two teen helpers). And every one of those adults was busy, actively engaged with the children. In conversations with our adult helpers, I hear two common themes: 1) they leave here tired, sometimes exhausted, after working with the children for an hour or two; and 2) they look forward to doing it all over again next Sunday. I ve even heard people say I m tired but it s a good kind of tired. The Children s Ministries at Barry Christian Church are indeed up and running. And growing. So too is our volunteer staff of adults and teen helpers. We couldn t do it without any of them. And we could always use more. And if we keep growing at the rate we have this past year, we ll need lots more. So again I say, this is a great problem to have. THANKS to our new volunteer van drivers for the church: Bob Settles and Lenny Ohrnell! They join our veteran drivers: Lana Whitton, John Adams, Jerry Treece and Dave Haynes. We appreciate your willing service. Executive Committee Meeting Sunday, February 7th at 12 NOON in the Upper Room. The church office will be closed on Monday, February 15th in observance of President s Day.
