The key lesson of Ecclesiastes is that life is vanity of vanities, transitory like vapor or breath that quickly vanishes. Those who work hard at gaining possessions and wealth will soon die an leave the possessions to one who has not worked for them. Striving for material things brings with it worry, anxiety and sleepless nights. Death makes such struggle futile and meaningless. Wisdom s lesson is to focus on the transitory nature of life and strive for things that truly matter in life. Only attunement to God s values and path, and not our limited and often distorted values, leads to the wisdom of heart necessary to face and work through life s transitory nature. Second Reading: Colossians 3: 1-5, 9-11 If in Baptism we have been raised with Christ, then it must manifest itself in our manner of living and relating to God and one another. Our life is now hidden with Christ in God such that we no longer act but Christ acts in and through us. We are challenged to put away all that is earthly, namely all that causes our hearts to harden and not be attuned to Christ s way of living and acting. In baptism we have put on Christ so we must live as Christ. Since Christ is all and in all, we are all bonded to each other, all divisions are eliminated, and nothing can ever separate us from God and one another. The rich fool parable becomes a living example of one who has not learned that one s life does not consist of possessions. Ecclesiastes wisdom of the vanity of life, the worries that come with possessions, and the uncertainty of inheritance upon death, are reiterated by Jesus as an important teaching lesson for all disciples. Jesus teaches us that we are all called to become rich in what matters to God: and not in storing up treasures for ourselves. Only by responding to God s covenant love offered to us in Christ, and striving to be in right relationship with all, will we ever achieve true wisdom of heart.

3 The Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They "are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs" (USCCA). They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. ST. July 1, 2015 June 30, 2016 Weekly Goal 780, , Collections for : 7/23 7/24, , Year to date Budget Year to date Receipts 60, , Difference: Surplus/(Deficit) 10, #2 GIVE DRINK TO THE TH IRSTY Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. We should support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource. We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Building Fund (Weekly Goal : 2, Interest on the New Land) Donate... to help build water wells for those in need. Organize a group of children involved on a sports team (e.g. soccer) or a summer camp. Invite them to collect bottled water to distribute at a shelter for families. If parents can be involved, ask them to accompany their children in delivering the water to the families. Do the same for youth and young adult groups. Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought. Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle.
