JUDE CATHOLIC CHURCH Makakilo Drive, Kapolei, HI Phone: (808) Fax: (808) May 18, 2012 Re: St. Jude Youth Ministry Dear Parents/Guardians, St. Jude Catholic Church is recognized as one of the fastest growing parishes in the Diocese of Honolulu. As a result of this growth, we are serving more families with children of age who can join our Youth Ministry. The vision of the Diocese as stated in the Diocesan Road Map is that Youth Ministry is not only a forum for youth, but is also a ministry that should lead the family into the full life of the Church. The reconfigured Diocesan Office for Youth Ministry is requiring annual evaluations of the parish Youth Ministry program. Therefore, we will be evaluating our Youth Ministry to make sure we are in compliance with Diocesan Guidelines and ensure that our youth are properly integrated into parish life and the Eucharist as noted in the Diocesan Road Map. While we are in the process of evaluating, the Youth Ministry program will be put on hiatus. All activities, except choir practice, will be put on hold until the evaluation is complete. Please be aware that you may be called upon during this process so your suggestions and expectations of the program may be heard. Thank you for your cooperation and support in the life of our parish. 5 85 Years of Caring St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii Submitted by Nathan Hokama, St. Francis Healthcare System Hawaii was blessed with a new hospital 85 years ago. St. Francis Hospital in Liliha officially opened its doors on May 9, Since then, thousands of Hawaii residents have received healing and wholeness through St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii. This sacred mission in the Islands continues today, carrying on the legacy of caring established by Saint Marianne Cope and the Sisters of St. Francis. Legacy, a newly published book commemorating the 85-year history of St. Francis Healthcare System, traces the historic milestones of Catholic healthcare in Hawaii. The book is edited by Sister Agnelle Ching, OSF, Chief Sponsorship Officer of St. Francis Healthcare System, and Eugene Tiwanak. Make a donation to the St. Marianne Cope Education Fund and you will receive this book for free, compliments of St. Francis Healthcare System. Box 29700, Honolulu, Hawaii For more information, call Dr. Rizzo appointed New Head of St. Theresa School On Thursday, May 17, 2012, Saint Theresa School announced the appointment of Dr. John Jack Rizzo as its new Head of School beginning July 1, Dr. Rizzo is currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Windham Southwest Supervisory Union in West Wilmington, Vermont. He earned his doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in He is an experienced and distinguished educator having served as Principal of St. John the Baptist Catholic School and Tathem Elementary School in Massachusetts, and as Head of School at Maui Preparatory Academy in Napili, the Villa Duchesne/Oak Hill School in Missouri, and at Saint Louis School in Honolulu. Dr. Rizzo describes his educational philosophy as Students First. Dr. Rizzo believes that educators must love and respect students unconditionally and enough to challenge them to do and be their best every day, to hold them accountable for their choices and decisions, to use mistakes and missteps as learning opportunities, and to support their hopes and dreams. As an administrator, Dr. Rizzo believes that schools must care enough for students to hire, train, and retain the very best faculty and staff. The school will host a reception to welcome Dr. Rizzo and his wife, Anne Marie, on Wednesday, May 30th at 6:00 pm in the auditorium. 7 Every great religious revival in America has led to an advance in civil rights from the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights to the end of slavery and the pursuit of racial equality. But all this has been achieved in the face of established power structures strongly and often violently opposed to these rights. So this is a time for choosing choosing whether as Catholics we will stand together to keep open the doors of religious liberty. If we do so, then we will make possible the next great awakening in America that will bring us closer to building that culture of life and civilization of love about which John Paul II so often spoke ~Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Address to the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast (April 19, 2012) The Knights of Columbus are proud to announce that they will be giving away two scholarships this year to graduating High School Seniors entering college. One will be provided to one boy and one girl from the St. Jude Parish. The candidate must be a family member of St. Jude for a period of three years. If the family has the financial means please do not apply. The scholarships are worth $ each. The awards will be given by draw only, thereby making it fair to all that enter. Please note that the deadline for all material to be received is no later than June 3, 2012 at the parish office. William Kunisch, Office of Worship All are welcome to join us for the annual Eucharistic Procession on the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, Sunday, June 10, We will begin with Mass at 10:30 am at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, 712 North School Street, Honolulu and begin our procession at about 12:15 pm to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, downtown. Lay Associations and Youth and Young Adult groups are especially encouraged to attend.
