The novena, which will be hosted by our parish ministries/organizations, begins on Thursday, October 20th and ends on Friday, October 28th. We will have a potluck after the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, October 29th. All are welcome, and encouraged to join both the novena and potluck as we honor our patron saint who has helped us during our most difficult trials and tribulations. Please take note that there will be no morning weekday Mass on October 20-21, Mass will be celebrated at 7:00pm on these days. The novena will be celebrated at the 5:00pm Mass on Saturday, October 22nd, and Sunday, October 23rd. 5 Faithful Citizenship Submitted by the Respect Life Office Bishops Issue New Introductory Note to Document Highlight Areas of Concern Including Religious Liberty Urge Catholics to Bring Moral Principles to Political Choices BISHOPS REAFFIRM FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP AS GUIDING TEACHING IN POLITICAL LIFE WASHINGTON-In advance of the 2012 elections, the U.S. bishops reaffirmed their 2007 document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, in this coming election cycle and beyond, as the "continuing teaching of our Bishops' Conference and our guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy." Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), joined the chairs of nine USCCB committees in offering an Introductory Note to the document. The bishops discussed this action at their June meeting and authorized it at the September meeting of the USCCB Administrative Committee. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship was approved overwhelmingly by the U.S. bishops in "We urge our Catholic pastors and people to continue to use this important statement to help them form their consciences, to contribute to civil and respectful public dialogue, and to shape their choices in the coming election in the light of Catholic teaching," the bishops wrote. "It does not offer a voter's guide, scorecard of issues or direction on how to vote. It applies Catholic moral principles to a range of important issues and warns against misguided appeals to 'conscience' to ignore fundamental moral claims, to reduce Catholic moral concerns to one or two matters, or to justify choices simply to advance partisan, ideological or personal interests." The Introductory Note does not modify or interpret the document itself and emphasizes the importance of religious freedom. It raises six "current and fundamental problems, some involving opposition to intrinsic evils and others raising serious moral questions." These are: abortion and threats to the lives and dignity of the vulnerable, sick or unwanted; threats to Catholic ministries, including health care, education and social services, to violate their consciences or stop serving those in need; intensifying efforts to redefine marriage; unemployment, poverty and debt; immigration; and wars, terror and violence, particularly in the Middle East. The USCCB is launching a new website for Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/. It will offer a wide range of web-based and written materials and tools to assist pastors, parishes, Catholic organizations and individuals. 6 Ministry Corner October 15-16, 2011 Children s Liturgy Hospitality Ministry Role of Children s Liturgy of the Word Minister The role of a Children s Liturgy Minister is to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word with the children in a separate room from the main assembly during weekend Masses. The children and the minister are blessed and dismissed by Father after the Opening Prayer. God s Word is read from the Children s Lectionary. The children and the ministry return to the main assembly during the Creed or the Preparation of the Gifts. Training The Children s Liturgy Ministers usually consists of two sessions: 1) Understanding the Mass and 2) Introduction to the lesson plan and other materials. Ministers in training will have an opportunity to attend a Children s Liturgy session before making a commitment. A mandatory 3 hour class on Safe Environment for anyone working with children. Roles & Responsibilities Welcoming Ministry Report at least 20 minutes prior to scheduled weekend Mass. Greet and welcome parishioners and visitors as they arrive at the main entrance of the church. Present new parishioners, visitors, and special occasion celebrants (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) with leis when introduced prior to the start of Mass. Oversee the preparation of refreshments after each Mass on Hospitality Sunday once a month. Maintain an adequate supply of paper goods, etc. to be used for special occasions. Coordinate and plan menus for special parish functions. Prepare refreshments for meetings requested by the Pastor. Oversee the use of the kitchen and its cleanliness. What is the Vocation Team? It is a joy-filled team, with positive attitudes to help you to see a future full of hope. It unifies parish ministries to help develop strong vocation programs enabling them to contribute to the overall vocation program. It educates parishioners, especially the youth & young adults, to think seriously about priestly and religious vocations and involve them in all vocation events. It encourages youth programs and youth participation in parish ministries. At the same time, encourages families to become more visible in parish events. It reaches out to young people who are beginning to explore their future in our church and encourages them to be active and participate in our church activities. It creates opportunities for priests, religious, and families to get to know each other.

Perhaps once it was the only way society could protect itself from those who would destroy the life of others, but today in most modern nations, judicial and penal systems have improved so much that they effectively remove further danger to innocent people by incarcerating the perpetrators of criminal violence. Imprisonment is effective in removing the offender from society. Importantly, it allows time for repentance and rehabilitation.
