Carol Hopson, Gabriel Graven EF Specialist TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great treasures of the Eastern tradition is the icon of the Holy Trinity created by the Russian iconographer Andrei Rublev in the 1400s. The Trinity is symbolized by the three travelers to the tent of Abraham and Sarah. They are seated at a table blessing a cup of wine, under the oak of Mamre. If you look closely, you will see a sacrificed calf in the chalice, reminding the viewer of the cross. The table, prepared for eating and tilted toward the viewer, is an invitation to the Eucharist. From left to right, each figure is keyed to a person of the Trinity. Like all icons, this image is theology in art. The persons are equal in proportion and dignity, they all carry staffs to symbolize their power, and are shown with golden wings and halos. Today, the best place to see Rublev s work is the Holy Trinity Cathedral, at the heart of the vast Holy Trinity monastery about an hour from Moscow. After decades of persecution, it is now once again a living monastery, a world heritage site, and the spiritual home of Russian Orthodoxy. A Google visit is highly recommended today! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
3 Most Holy Trinity Sunday Nativity Information From the Desk of Father Robert - The Most Holy Trinity The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. (CCC 234). What does this actually mean? The Holy Trinity is One triune God: meaning Three persons in One God. We have God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Each of the three are co-equal and co-eternal. Each has a distinct role as we faithfully profess every Sunday in our Nicene Creed. Just as every human being is composed of a mind, body and soul, our Holy Trinity is a living relational God composed of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Some theologians classify these separate but total roles as the being one, the knowing one, the loving one. Other names for the individual but complete composition of the Trinity is God the Creator, Jesus the Redeemer, Holy Spirit the Sanctifier. Three distinct realities and roles within one total being. Another analogy for the Holy Trinity is the popular comparison of H2O. This is another name for water. Water can have three different properties of water, ice, and snow. Each has a unique form, substance and purpose. Water is a liquid, ice is a solid, and snow is a changing precipitation. As each is different, but all forms of water, so the Trinity is each one distinct but all One God. Being that we are made in the image and likeness of God, we are meant to be relational, just as the Holy Trinity is relational. At Baptism, we are cleansed with water and the words I baptize you in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit. This Baptismal rite brings each individual into God s family as His child and also into the community of His disciples. And as we begin every prayer with the sign of the cross and the words in the name of The Father, and of The Son, and of The Holy Spirit, we are protected with God s shield of the Holy Trinity and we are never alone. We are a Community of people and united as a Christian family and this unity comes from The Father, through The Son, and in The Holy Spirit. The Most Holy Trinity. Amen.

5 Most Holy Trinity Sunday Diocese Information DISCOVERING CHRIST HOLY ROSARY CHURCH 4851 Park Avenue Memphis, TN Come Hear the Good News! Join us in the Family Room on Sundays from 6-8:30pm starting June 10th for eight weeks. A life changing opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ. Enjoy a delicious dinner and listen to an enlightening teaching. After, join fellow adults in exploring the meaning of life and the identity of Jesus Christ. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED TO ATTEND: Click ChristLife-register Catholic Charities of West Tennessee Launches Literacy Project Memphis, TN May 10, During the first few years of life, children living in poverty hear 30 million fewer words than children in middle class homes. This is called a word gap, and research shows that this word gap has a negative impact on brain development and language acquisition. This is an especially significant problem in a city like Memphis, where 44.7 percent of children live in poverty, according to the University of Memphis. To address this complex problem, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee has developed a research-based, four-step remedy called the Word Gap Project, which can be implemented easily at no cost. Caregivers for young children should make a special effort to take these simple steps every day: make eye contact with children talk directly to them read books to them sing songs to them Direct eye contact gets a child s attention and makes the child feel loved. Speaking to children in sentences of five words or more helps them expand vocabulary and improves brain development. Catholic Charities is sharing this program with educators, churches and day cares, encouraging any organization that comes in contact with young children to implement this effective method of improving language skills. Come and Share the Journey with Catholic Charities of West Tennessee and celebrate World Immigration Day on Thursday, June 21, at noon at our offices at 1325 Jefferson Ave. Join us for lunch and conversation with our newest neighbors, newcomers to our country who have received citizenship services through Catholic Charities. The event is free for all to attend. For more information, Rachel.daddabbo@acc.cdom.org. Please RSVP to this event by contacting Rachel D Addabbo at (901) or the address listed above. BLUEGRASS IN THE BEER GAR- DEN The Bluegrass in the Beer Garden s purpose is to raise money for the St. Mary s Soup Kitchen. We serve meals six days per week at the rate of around 1200 meals per week, 60,000 per year. This is our one and only, colossal fundraiser for the year. Don t miss out on this fun event which will be held in the St. Mary s garden on June 9th from 5:30 9:30 PM. There will be plenty of music, delicious food and drinks for a mere $50 per ticket. We will also have tours of our beautiful, historic Church. You may purchase your ticket by going to Brownpapertickets.com or by sending your check to St. Mary s, 155 Market, WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." Is God in your marriage? He is with you to help you have the marriage that will honor Him. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends are 1-3 June and October 2018 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Retreat Center in Stanton, TN. For more information or to apply, visit our website at or contact The really wonderful thing about this program is that it is just so simple. It requires no special training or equipment just two-and-a-half hours of conversation or reading from parents or caregivers over the course of a day, said Therese Gustaitis, Deputy Executive Director of Catholic Charities. The reward for this small investment of time is great, especially in the life of a child. A video tutorial and one-page handout on the program in English and Spanish can be downloaded at ccwtn.org/wordgap. Catholic Charities is grateful for the sponsorship of Homewood Suites by Hilton, which made this promotion of this program possible. For more information about the Word Gap Project, please contact Rachel D Addabbo at or Rachel.daddabbo@acc.cdom.org.
