Carol Hopson, Gabriel Graven EF Specialist LOVE ONE ANOTHER In the Gospel for the Sixth Sunday of Easter we are met with an extraordinary challenge: Jesus commands us to love one another as I love you (John 15:12). The letter from John echoes this command. Of course, we are to love those in our family, those we work with, those we like. But the scriptures make clear that we are also to love those we never notice, those we purposely avoid, and even those we are tempted to despise. In this Sunday s selection from the Acts of the Apostles Peter shows us how far God s love extends, and how far our love should extend in response. Peter realizes that God no longer shows partiality to the Jews, sharing divine love exclusively with them. Christ has revealed that God s love extends to all people, and so should ours. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In ancient Rome, the beautiful month of May was dedicated to the goddess Flora, the patroness of flowers and new life. May 1 was considered the beginning of abundant growth, and a day for public festivals aimed at expelling winter. Even after Christianity took hold, the customs of the pagan feast lingered behind. Long ago, there was a thirty-day devotion to Mary, sometimes called Lady Month, which began on August 15. By the eighteenth century, the custom of assigning devotions to months of the year was developing. June, for example, was the month of the Sacred Heart, and October was for the Holy Rosary. Beginning with the Jesuit Order in Rome and spreading throughout the world, May has been celebrated as the month of Mary, the Blessed Mother, for more than two hundred years. That was a welcome remedy to some enduring pagan practices, such as maypole dancing and the crowning of the May Queen. Some historians say that in ancient times the May Queen was actually a human sacrifice. Devoting May to Mary is undoubtedly a better thing to do. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

This is an important and memorable day in each child's life as he or she receives Jesus' body, blood, soul and divinity for the very first time! 4 May 5 & 6, 2018 Nativity Information The newly formed Memphis Chorale will present a program of sacred and secular classics at Nativity on Tuesday, May 15, beginning at 7 pm. The Chorale is a professional group made up of 16 singers directed by noted choral conductor Gabriel Statom. Their website is memphischorale.org. The concert includes music by Bach, Monteverdi, and selections from Durufle Requiem, accompanied by Scott Elsholz. Other selections include spirituals such as He's Got the Whole World in His Hands, Daniel, Servant of the Lord, and the anthem of the Civil Rights movement, We Shall Overcome. The program also includes secular classics such as Skylark, Our Love Is Here to Stay and Danny Boy. The program is free and all are welcome! VINCENT de PAUL - Nativity Our Society of St. Vincent de Paul conference is an active and viable part of the Bartlett/Raleigh community. Soup Kitchen Information On April 17th, 4 volunteers from Nativity fed 150. The next Soup Kitchen is May 1st. Volunteers meet at 8 am at Nativity on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month. Our Ensembles Parish Choir The Parish Choir is open to all parishioners from The ensemble rehearses every Wednesday from 7:30-9pm, and sings every Sunday for the 10:30 Mass, in addition to solemnities and other high holy days. Children s Choir The Children s Choir is open to all kids grades 2-9 and rehearses every Wednesday from 5-5:45pm. The ensemble sings about once a month for the 10:30 Mass. The kids learn the music for Mass, of course, but they also learn proper vocal technique, musical literacy, sight singing, and musical and church history. Handbell Choir The Handbell Choir is open to all parishioners and rehearses every Wednesday from 6-6:50pm. The bells play about every six weeks, and members learn about music, handbell technique, and have an overall good time! A little bit of prior musical experience is helpful but not required. Resurrection Choir The Resurrection Choir is open to all parishioners and rehearses two Tuesdays per month from 10-11:30am. A unique ministry in our Diocese, this ensemble sings for all parish funerals, and also sings once a month for 5 pm Saturday Mass. Cantors Our cantors are the most visible members of Nativity s music ministries. We strive to have a cantor lead the music for every Mass. Musical literacy and competency is required to serve as a cantor, and Dr. Scott is happy to work with individuals who want to try this out. Nativity Band The Nativity Band leads our music twice a year for Praise and Worship Adoration. Stay tuned for more information!

Scheduling Events at the Church Our parish is very busy and we receive many requests to use meeting spaces and the church grounds. Please contact Deacon Frank Larker at to schedule your event. All requests should be scheduled as far in advance as possible. Those who use our facility are responsible for setup and clean-up. You must notify the office if your event is cancelled or if you need to reschedule. You cannot reschedule an event WITHOUT contacting the office. Rescheduling your event without contacting the office leads to conflicts with others who went through the proper channel to schedule their event. So, please be considerate. Thank You!
