Carol Hopson, Gabriel Graven EF Specialist ALL ARE SENT Fifty days after Easter Sunday we celebrate the fulfillment of all God s promises in the feast of Pentecost, a feast that has sometimes been called the birthday of the church. One last time we are reminded that we Christians have received the Holy Spirit, not for our own benefit, but to enable us to follow our Christian vocation. The centerpiece of the scriptures for Pentecost is the account in Acts of the Apostles of the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. The other readings for this Sunday help us to understand what it means to live out our Christian vocation. Paul s letter shows us the gifts and fruits that the Holy Spirit gives to us. John s Gospel reminds us that Jesus has sent all his disciples to share his forgiveness and peace, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spirit is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there have an eye in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus. After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the Holy Spirit brings on this, the birthday of the church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

3 Pentecost Sunday Nativity Information From the Desk of Father Robert - THE IMPORTANCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Lord send out Your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. Jesus Apostles were renewed at Pentecost. They were praying with Mary in the Upper Room after Jesus Ascension and were fearful for ten days. Suddenly the Holy Spirit descended upon them. Once touched by the tongues of fire, each one was strengthened in an individual way to proclaim the Good News. This began our Catholic Church and the building of our universal faith community. The Apostles were able to then leave the comfort of the Upper Room and courageously go proclaiming into different regions of the world. Jesus life and words now made sense to them by the Holy Spirit s gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding and right judgment. And by the gifts of courage, reverence, and wonder and awe they were able to speak the truth that Jesus had taught them. They cooperated and responded to the Holy Spirit and were blessed with baptizing and teaching many followers and disciples of Jesus. The growth, life, and heart of the Church stems from the Holy Spirit. Just as the Apostles needed the Holy Spirit to live the lives Jesus had taught them, we too need the Holy Spirit to lead us. As St. Paul said, the Church is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. We are a community of believers led by the Holy Spirit. We are baptized with the Holy Spirit and strengthened spiritually at Confirmation. We truly become soldiers of Christ. Every Sacrament reaches our interior being by the grace of the Holy Spirit and allows us to grow in virtue. When we respond to the Spirit s movement within our heart and interior life, then we can experience the spiritual fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, generosity, faithfulness and self-control. With these spiritual fruits, we can live lovingly and courageously as Jesus disciples. And charitably and boldly help others too. So let us prepare for our own Pentecost- the deepening of the Holy Spirit and God s life in us and build up God s people and Kingdom on earth. With our openness to grace and truth, we can go towards the Kingdom that Jesus taught us about. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Volunteer meetings: May 6pm (volunteer crew leaders) June 6pm Please join us June from 9am-12:30pm for a week of Ship wrecked!
