Carol Hopson, Gabriel Graven EF Specialist TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION When an altar is dedicated, the Rite of Dedicaton directs that, if possible, the relics of a martyr be mortared into the church floor under the mensa, or altar table. Up until this revised rite, the general practice was to include small relics of saints in an altar stone, a slab of marble that was normally set in the altar itself. Today s rite states a clear preference for martyr, and for a substantial part of the body, in accord with our tradition s desire for substantial symbols. Martyr, of course, means witness in Greek, and was the title given early on to the people who by their death imaged the death of Christ. From the beginning, there has never been a shortage of such people, although it took a while for the Church to develop a process to declare someone a martyr. Saint Augustine tells how it was done in the fifth century. By then, popular opinion didn t count as much as an official tribunal set up by the bishop of the place where the martyr suffered. After the inquiry established that the person did indeed die for the faith, a metropolitan bishop had to ratify the decision before a shrine could be built or an altar set up over the martyr s tomb. For the most part, the honor paid to a martyr (called a cult ) was restricted to that diocese, although the fame of some heroes spread so much that they were celebrated elsewhere. The age of the martyrs is now, and more people died for the faith in the twentieth century than ever before, witnessing to Christ to the end. Their sacrifice remains the seed of the Church. Rev. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. VINCENT de PAUL - Nativity The 11th Annual St. Vincent DePaul Friends of the Poor Walk for the Benefit of the Ozanam Center will be held Saturday, September 15th at Christian Brothers High School, 5900 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis. Each day of the year the Ozanam Center provides 150 to 225 meals to the poor. Register to walk at or, if you can t attend, walk with us in spirit at News from SVdP: We were able to help 8 families in August. Three families received an average of $568 worth of assistance with their utility bills and 1 family received $845 in assistance with their rent. and 3 families were given an average of $28 of food. I have a story I would like to share with you A few weeks ago a woman arrived at the church on a Saturday afternoon before mass. She was greeted by Father Robert and needed assistance from SVdP Nativity Conference. She was in tears and explained that her husband walked out on her and her children, had the electricity disconnected at their home, and left the bill unpaid. MIFA had agreed to pay for a motel for the weekend so the family wouldn t have to stay in a house without utilities. The woman came to Nativity because she needed food for herself and her children. Thanks to you, our pantry was stocked and she was able to get the food she needed to feed her children. The woman also asked for money to pay her neighbor back for gasoline because he had been taking her from place to place because she had no car, and needed three one-day bus passes for downtown, as well, because she had an appointment with MIFA on Monday morning, as well as several other appointments in the area she needed to keep. I could not leave the church because I needed to finish setting up for mass, but went to the SVdP Poor Box and found the money I needed to help her. Because of your generosity, we were able to provide money for gasoline, the three bus tickets, and a little left over for milk, etc. at the grocery store. I just wanted you to know that the food you donate and the money you put in the poor box really does help families in need. God s Blessings, Dawn Campbell Soup Kitchen Information! On August 21st four volunteers fed 137. Volunteers meet at 7:45 am at Nativity on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month. We gather each Thursday for Kickball and post-game fellowship. We are now taking sign ups. The season begins September 6. We play at Tobey Park in midtown every Thursday night through early November with a postseason tournament. The games start at 6:30, 7:30, or 8:30. We usually play one 50-minute game a week.
