Carol Hopson, Gabriel Graven EF Specialist TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The American Revolution cleared the way for freedom of religion in the former colonies, since the colonies had always been a more religiously tolerant place than the old country. Even so, colonial laws restricted the practice of the Catholic faith, and just as in England, Americans who desired to be priests or nuns had to go to the Netherlands or France. As political storm clouds gathered in France, an American woman, Mother Bernardina Matthews, the prioress of the Hoogstraeten Carmel in Holland, made a brave move. With two other American nuns, her nieces, and a Dutch sister, she came to Port Tobacco, Maryland, in Within twenty years the community had grown to twenty, although by 1823 their farm failed and they had to move to Baltimore and open a school. The Carmelite order requires contemplation and cloister, so in time the school was closed. The Port Tobacco land had long since been sold, but in 1976 a community of nuns was able to return thanks to loyal neighbors who had worked for forty years for their restoration. Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be.

After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31).

Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings.

3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time REST IN THE LORD For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out two by two to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recognizing their fatigue, says, Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? The following help is needed. 1) On Saturday, July 28 th we will need volunteers to set up the tables and chairs in Stelling Hall. Will also need this help after the reception on July 29 th to take down the tables and chairs. 2) On Sunday, July 29 th at 9:00am we ask for help in setting up for the dinner. This includes making the ice tea, lemonade etc. and of course cleaning up after the reception. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. 4 July 21 & 22, 2018 ST. VINCENT de PAUL - Nativity News from SVdP: We received 24 calls in July and were able to assist 6 families. Four of those calls were for food, on which we spent an average of $49 per family. One family received $500 to be used toward their utility bill. Another family called for both food and rental assistance, of which they received $50 in food and $500 to be used toward their rent. We thank you for your generous donations to help families in need. Note: Although we truly appreciate your kind donations to our food pantry the SVdP Food Pantry provides food for families, therefore we do not need the HUGE cans of vegetables or the HUGE bags of rice/ beans.
