3 WHY SHOULD I GIVE TO MY CHURCH If you re a Catholic today, you may find yourself asking the question, Why should I give to my church? After all, there seems to be endless problems and scandals, sexual, financial and otherwise. These matters do not instill confidence and faith, and perhaps just the opposite. I believe that many of you may really be asking the hard questions of yourself, as well as your family and friends. Some of you have even asked the hard questions of us - and rightly so! Perhaps in these troubling days you may have also answered that question (or heard it answered) in several different ways apart from the challenges and scandals of the moment, for example: I don t need to give that much. I need the little money I have. I really can t afford to give. I don t have to give to my church since I give elsewhere. I ll give later when I have more money. Notwithstanding these, and many other answers, there are some very good reasons why you should give to our church. Here are just a few for your thought and prayerful consideration. GIVING follows receiving You should give because God gives to you so that you would generously give to others. Paul testifies in 2 Corinthians 9:11 that you will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way. Have you received anything? Then you should give generously. God doesn t want you to hoard anything. God structured God s provision to not only be received, but also spread. GIVING meets needs Local churches, (and St Teresa s) doesn t have money trees growing in the prayer garden; we all need financial support. It is surely appropriate to fund those who tirelessly minister the Gospel to our souls (1 Corinthians 9:9-14). It s heartbreaking to see a church struggle when its people don t provide financial support. A simple review of any newspaper recently show how many are past being able to be saved. (Just visit many European, and other countries, where churches have become nothing more than museums reflecting a faith vibrancy of the past.) We also remember that parish staffs are not volunteers and need to earn a living wage. Those who labor full time in the ministry always need the financial support of those who aren t in full time ministry. After all, the maintenance staff, secretarial staff, pastoral ministers, musicians, and even the clergy all need to be paid despite their personal love of Jesus. GIVING glorifies God Think through this exchange of hands: God gives, we receive, we give, another receives, and then what does the recipient do? What is our natural reaction when someone gives us something we need? We thank them. When we give what God has given us, we are putting a match to the fuel of praise that will burn up in thanksgivings that glorify God (2 Corinthians 9:12). GIVING benefits us God has wonderfully orchestrated giving to benefit the recipient and the giver. The extremely poor people in Macedonia begged to take part in an offering to meet the needs of other Christians. They saw giving as something that benefitted them. When we give, we become like the character personified in Psalm 112:9 He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever. There is a soulstrengthening, vivifying, gladdening stream that is reserved for givers. GIVING imitates Jesus For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9). Jesus gave more than we can imagine so that we would become rich beyond our wildest dreams. If Jesus gave and we call ourselves his people, his Church, we should imitate our Lord and become loving, living examples of our heavenly Benefactor. 4 Giving to the Church Credit EJP Photo Colorized In a recent article the famous writer and speaker Pastor Rick Warren, said, If you want your church to grow, you must learn how to motivate believers to invest their resources into the Kingdom for ministry and for facilities. It is a key responsibility of leadership. Whoever writes the agenda must be able to underwrite the agenda. If you re going to form the vision, you also have to be able to fund the vision. He also noted that a lot of pastors, a lot of elders, a lot of church leaders have a real hangup about asking people to give. They allow personal insecurities and personal fears to limit the ministry. You don t need to be embarrassed about asking people to give. There is nothing greater than the Kingdom of God. There is no more significant cause than the church. Interestingly, he says that he is very much against fundraising, but is in favor of teaching people to give. Fundraising is what he calls collecting money from other people in return for a product, service, reward, or recognition. But in giving, he notes that we simply challenge ourselves to give out of our own resources for spiritual reasons. The result of fundraising is that funds are collected. The results of teaching people to be givers are that funds are collected and disciples are developed. Pastor Warren describes me and many of my priest friends well - we are not trained, and we would rather not be involved in the giving part of the Church. Asking people to part with their financial resources, and challenging people to be accountable to the faith community is a very difficult task - but unfortunately, its part of the pastor s responsibility. His further thoughts help to analyze this complicated situation. He says that to develop generous disciples, we need to understand why people give. Warren offers the following eight thoughts which I offer with some of my own commentary. 1 they TRUST the leadership. John 10:1-11 says, The sheep listen to [the shepherd s] voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. He goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd Study after study has proven that in the hierarchy of giving, people give first of all to people they believe in. Then they give to purposes. Finally they give to programs. That means the most essential elements in teaching people to give are relational, not functional. I know well that trusting the leadership of our Church in these days can be challenging. As I have said to some who have asked, please hold me accountable for what we do here at St Teresa s - that s the scope of my authority. If you are dissatisfied with the Pope or the Cardinal or some other Church official, please don t punish our parish. We are working hard to provide meaningful, spiritual

5 and other services for our parishioners. And if there s something about me that is unsettling, please contact me - come in for coffee or a glass of wine so that we can discuss it in person. We are a Church after all! 2 they CATCH A VISION, not when they see a need. The Bible says, Where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). Did you know that Ivy League schools usually receive the largest endowments? And they are the schools that need the money the least. Why? People give to success. They give to vision. They don t give to needs. they catch a vision and they get the big picture. We are in the process here at St Teresa s of organizing and hosting listening sessions and working with a strategic planning committee in order to create a mission, vision, and some strategic goals - spiritual and temporal. Clearly our primary task is to make disciples of Jesus Christ and spread the Good News... now we need to better organize the how. When a parish is alive in Christ people s lives are changed as they also give marriages are saved, broken people are put back together, people overcome addictions, and the list goes on and on. 3 People give to experience the JOY of generosity. It feels good to give generously it really does. A person who doesn t understand that has never given generously. The happiest people in the world are the most giving people. Guilt never motivates people to give. Giving that is motivated by guilt only lasts as long as the guilt does. So we never use guilt to motivate people to give. We use joy to motivate people to give. I want our people to give generously so that we can pass on to future generations a Church that is alive, filled with the Spirit and is well-maintained. Our Church is magnificent - and part of my job is to ensure that it survives for future generations. 4 they are INSPIRED by models. We learn best by watching models. That s why a testimony about giving is a thousand times more effective than a sermon on giving. Models motivate us. Giving is contagious. So I encourage you to write down and send me your testimonies, how you decided to give, and what they were giving. I would welcome some of you to speak to our congregation during the Lenten season when we focus on giving more closely. 5 People give when they are INVOLVED. Paul told the Philippians, I thank my God because of your partnership in the gospel (Philippians 1:3, 5). The fact is those who are most involved in a parish will be those who sacrifice the most. That s why we don t allow folks to reduce the Church and the reception of her sacraments to a consumerist model. We welcome people to celebrate the sacraments, but its necessary to participate and be involved. Faith is about practice, not about checking off a box on a list of to dos. 6 pastors ASK them to give. James says, You do not have because you do not ask God (James 4:2). The Bible says ask and seek and knock. God asks people to give. Pastor Warren writes that the fact is we re doing people a favor when we ask them to give because then they grow in faith, and they grow in love, they grow in sacrifice, they grow in commitment, and they grow in character as they learn to give. He assures that those who give will be blessed in return. Warren writes that our church will be hurt more by those who would have said yes and were not asked, than by those who were asked and said no. Its an interesting concept that I will be taking to prayer. 7 People give when we make it POSSIBLE for them to give. Second Corinthians 8:12 says, For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have. In short, Warren said that as pastor I need to make it possible for people to give in as many ways as I can. He recommends that pastors teach people how to want to give, and they ll figure out how. Warren suggests that we teach people that they can either give by reason or by revelation. Giving by reason means this I look at what I have, I figure out what s reasonable, and I commit that amount. It doesn t take any faith to give by reason. I just figure out what can I afford to give. Giving by revelation means I determine my gift by praying Lord, what do you want to give through me? This requires faith. When you give by revelation, you re committing an act of worship and saying, How much am I willing to trust God? That s something I ask you to take to prayer. 8 their gifts are APPRECIATED. The whole book of Philippians is just a thank-you letter from Paul for their offerings, for their financial support. Pastor Warren recommends to pastors that we figure out seven ways to thank people for their gifts a card, a call, a banquet, etc. He notes that a little appreciation goes a long way in encouraging people to be generous for the long haul. In closing, I take Pastor Warren s words to heart - and I thank you for all you have done and are doing to help St Teresa s be a place where people can experience the love and healing of Jesus. And if there is anything that we can do better, or if you have any questions about our financials or other aspects of our parish, please never hesitate to be in touch. Blessings! Fr Bob

As we begin a new year, I m sure that there are many things we would rather leave behind and start anew. No doubt much of the news of our Church dealing with sex abuse, lack of transparency, abuse of power and more is enough to chase even the staunchest Catholic away. But many stay and work to rebuild our church. So we re inviting you - male and female, young and old, cradle, ex, and new Catholics on why you came to and stay in the church. We re calling for your stories so that we can inspire one another and see the Spirit at work in our midst. So why and how did you come to the church? Why do you stay? We hope you ll help our congregation grow in faith by sharing your view positive or negative of the church today. We ll select some to feature in our bulletin and on our social media and website. Contributions can be sent to Nick Leeper at nickl@stteresaavila.org and should consist of no more than 300 words. Thank you.
