3 est MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR - DIVINE RENOVATION - This past Monday and Tuesday I had the privilege with some of our staff to attend a conference on parish renewal under the title of DIVINE RENOVATION. Fr James Mallon and his associates at St Benedict s in Halifax have really made their mark on the world by challenging parishes to transform from maintenance to mission. Mallon notes that there is much talk in our Church today about crises. We are told that we have a vocations crisis, a family crisis, a marriage crisis, a financial crisis, a faith crisis, a sexual abuse crisis, a leadership crisis, and a (insert your own) crisis. While there may be much valuable discussion around these issues, Mallon contends that our deepest crisis is an identity crisis, and that these other crises are but symptoms of this deepest crisis of all, we have forgotten who we are and what we are called to do as a Church. He notes that when this happens, we soon forget not only what our buildings are for, but why we exist as a Church to begin with. He suggests that the identity crisis in our Church today is not unlike the one that existed in the time of Jesus. It is said that it s not so much that the Church of Christ has a mission, as that mission of Jesus Christ has a Church. Mallon believes that we have so forgotten our essential missionary calling that we have contented ourselves with maintenance and serving ourselves. That the Church exists for the sake of mission has been asserted by popes and theologians continuously for the last 50 years, but most Catholics perceive mission as something that a select few carry out in far away places. Mallon describes the Church s mission as one of seeking and saving those who might otherwise perish, as on the night of the Titanic. Perhaps in these summer months we might all think and pray about how we can be more mission oriented and less focused on maintenance. We will be discussing these themes in greater detail the Fall. If you are interested in learning more, please consider reading his book entitled Divine Renovation: Bringing your parish from maintenance to mission. Blessings! Fr Bob Some have inquired as to what is the position of the Church on the stories in the news regarding immigration. We reprint here the information provided to parishes from the United Conference of Catholic Bishops: News from our nation's shared border with Mexico is disturbing largely because of the US Government's insistence on enforcing a "zero tolerance policy," announced in May, which calls for prosecuting all those who cross the border illegally and separating children immigrating with parents from their families. "At its core, asylum is an instrument to preserve the right to life. The Attorney General's recent decision elicits deep concern because it potentially strips asylum from many women who lack adequate protection. These vulnerable women will now face return to the extreme dangers of domestic violence in their home country. This decision negates decades of precedents that have provided protection to women fleeing domestic violence. Unless overturned, the decision will erode the capacity of asylum to save lives, particularly in cases that involve asylum seekers who are persecuted by private actors. We urge courts and policy makers to respect and enhance, not erode, the potential of our asylum system to preserve and protect the right to life. Additionally, I join Bishop Joe Vásquez, Chairman of USCCB's Committee on Migration, in condemning the continued use of family separation at the US/Mexico border as an implementation of the Administration's zero tolerance policy. Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma. Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral." - Cardinal Daniel DiNardo
4 How can I Pray A great way to pray is to look for God s presence in your life. More than 400 years ago St Ignatius Loyola encouraged prayer-filled mindfulness by proposing what has been called the Daily Examen. The Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God s presence and to discern his direction for us. Try this version of St Ignatius s prayer. 1. Become aware of God s presence. Look back on the events of the day in the company of the Holy Spirit. The day may seem confusing to you a blur, a jumble, a muddle. Ask God to bring clarity and understanding. 2. Review the day with gratitude. Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God. Walk through your day in the presence of God and note its joys and delights. Focus on the day s gifts. Look at the work you did, the people you interacted with. What did you receive from these people? What did you give them? Pay attention to small things the food you ate, the sights you saw, and other seemingly small pleasures. God is in the details. 3. Pay attention to your emotions. One of St Ignatius s great insights was that we detect the presence of the Spirit of God in the movements of our emotions. Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. Boredom? Elation? Resentment? Compassion? Anger? Confidence? What is God saying through these feelings? God will most likely show you some ways that you fell short. Make note of these sins and faults. But look deeply for other implications. Does a feeling of frustration perhaps mean that God wants you consider a new direction in some area of your work? Are you concerned about a friend? Perhaps you should reach out to her in some way. 4. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particularly important. It may involve a feeling positive or negative. It may be a significant encounter with another person or a vivid moment of pleasure or peace. Or it may be something that seems rather insignificant. Look at it. Pray about it. Allow the prayer to arise spontaneously from your heart whether intercession, praise, repentance, or gratitude. 5. Look toward tomorrow. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow s challenges. Pay attention to the feelings that surface as you survey what s coming up. Are you doubtful? Cheerful? Apprehensive? Full of delighted anticipation? Allow these feelings to turn into prayer. Seek God s guidance. Ask him for help and understanding. Pray for hope. St Ignatius encouraged people to talk to Jesus like a friend. End the Daily Examen with a conversation with Jesus. Ask forgiveness for your sins. Ask for his protection and help. Ask for his wisdom about the questions you have and the problems you face. Do all this in the spirit of gratitude. Your life is a gift, and it is adorned with gifts from God. End the Daily Examen with the Our Father. PRAYER/THE-EXAMEN/HOW-CAN-I-PRAY MORE WAYS TO GIVE LEGACY FUND Aiming to secure the sustainability of parish ministries and outreach programs, the Legacy Fund provides funding for parish specific endeavors such as outreach programs, maintaining our buildings and enhancing ministries. The Legacy Fund is a restricted fund, meaning that 100% of the contributions received directly support St Teresa of Avila and are not subject to an Archdiocesan or any other assessment or tax. We ask ALL parishioners to consider supporting the Fund. There are no minimum donations or bequests. Methods of support include: (1) gifts of cash or stock; (2) land or buildings; (3) modification of wills and trusts to include the Legacy Fund in estate documents; (4) beneficiary designation of life insurance or IRA accounts; (5) advanced planning strategies, including charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. The Finance Council, in conjunction with the Pastor annually determines what restricted projects are the beneficiaries of the Legacy Fund. Please contact Finance Manager George Klacik for more information. MATCHING GIFTS Many employers offer employees the opportunity to make contributions to charitable organizations such as St Teresa's through: 1. Payroll withholding deposited into the employer controlled trust account(s) 2. Credit card donations deposited into the employer's controlled trust account(s) 3. Personal checks paid to the employer's controlled trust account(s) 4. Matching gifts 5. Paid work days to serve as a volunteer SECURITIES By giving appreciated securities that you have owned for more than a year, your charitable deduction is the fair market value of the securities on the day of the gift. Such gifts provide income tax savings and eliminate your capital gains tax liability. WILLS & ESTATES The parish can be remembered in your Will while still providing for your loved ones. Suggested wording for such bequests is: I give the sum of $ (or % of my estate) to the Church of, for its general purposes (or something more specific of your choosing). LIFE INSURANCE Consider naming St Teresa Church as the beneficiary or owner of a new life insurance policy or the beneficiary of an existing policy. For a young adult, the premium for purchasing a new policy is minimal, yet the lasting benefits to the parish are significant. RETIREMENT PLANS Consider naming the Church as the beneficiary or contingent beneficiary on your Beneficiary Designation of your retirement plan, IRA or 401(k). It s easy, requires no attorney or fee, and is tax advantageous. FINANCIAL INFORMATION The parish publishes the amount of the previous month s collection in The Handbook as well as on the website as the cumulated amount tallied against budgeted expenses. If you would like to discuss the financial situation of the parish in more details, please contact the Finance Council through the Parish Secretary.
