3 Enhancing Our Sunday Celebration Since my arrival, I have been keenly paying attention to how we celebrate Mass, which is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. Everything else we do is secondary. To that end, I hope that you have noted, happily, the team of priests we now have that celebrate with us weekly. These men present a wide variety of training and experience. We are blessed to have them with us. We have also spent some time working together with the ministers of the liturgy those who prepare, guide, serve, proclaim God s Word and distribute His Body and Blood. In addition to recruiting more people in each category, we are seeking some to come forward to serve as Greeters. What we do at the liturgy truly matters as we join our personal story to God s story of love for us, presented in Jesus. Today, I am happy to announce that I have made a staffing change that will further enhance our Sunday Celebration. I introduce to you the newest members of our pastoral team The Director of Music and Liturgy Matthew Still and the Associate Director, Kristin Hoyt. You will soon see the incredible talent Matthew and Kristen bring to our parish, and I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Matthew Still Matthew Still is a native of Mobile, AL with a degree in Piano Performance from the University of South Alabama. Matthew is a pianist, organist, composer, arranger and has been working as a minister of liturgical music for twenty years and composing for approximately eight years. Matthew has composed two mass settings using the revised texts of the Roman Missal: Mass in Honor of Saint Dominic and Mass of Exultation, both published by Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN. Matthew's unpublished works include anthem-style pieces for chorus and chamber orchestra, contemporary ensemble, and a variety of new settings of the psalms. Matthew also works part-time as adjunct faculty accompanist for the New Jersey City University music department. Kristen Hoyt Kristen Hoyt is a musician, arranger, and composer residing in Montclair, NJ and is a graduate of New Jersey City University (BM Jazz Performance). A third generation organist and cantor, Kristen has been working for the church for nineteen years. She is the general music teacher at Wallace School in Hoboken, NJ. Kristen is well known in the NJ/NY choral, liturgical, and theater communities for her musical direction, choral conducting, arranging, orchestrating, and conducting. She is featured on two recording projects with Oregon Catholic Press composer and liturgist Gerard Chiusano and has opened and performed with the likes of Chaka Khan, Kurt Elling, James Moody, Dan Schutte, Curtis Stephan, and John Pizzarelli. Attending and participating in Mass must constitute a non-negotiable in the Christian s spiritual life. Surely, in our lives, there have been times, especially perhaps in our younger days when we took a vacation from our regular participation in the Sunday Mass and gave various reasons for not going. Perhaps these are among the reasons offered for not attending Mass: it s boring, I don t get anything out of it, and/or the music is bad. Mass must be celebrated in such a manner that its Truth, Goodness and Beauty shines forth. I hope that has been your experience here at St Teresa s. I have heard the stories that in many places it isn t often celebrated this way and many, including young people find it difficult to want to attend. I hope you will receive these new additions to our team in that spirit. I pray that your worship here with us will continue to draw you closer to the living God, who s love for each of us knows no limits. Blessings! -Fr Bob School news Our children have been working on being kind and helpful towards one another. Our lessons this week focus on being a team and respectful in the classroom. The children will be enjoying 6 weeks of indoor gym classes that was provided by our PTO. The children will have an opportunity to play games, learn about sportsmanship and how to take care of their bodies. Registration is still going on, so please drop off your applications. Please call to schedule a tour and see our school. Join us on Sunday, January 28 at 9:00 to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, followed by an Open House at our school. Congratulations to Msgr Robert S Meyer for being our thirteenth Pastor at St Teresa's. We welcome you to our parish. "To Everything there is a Season, and a Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven. The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are ready or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.

4 TO GIVE Recently, I read an article on line entitled, Why Are Catholics Cheapskates Regarding Giving? Naturally, the pastor in me urged me to read it in its entirety. While interesting, it didn t offer me any new insights whatsoever. All that has been shared, already has been written. I share some of its thoughts not only for your consideration, but also for your action and feedback. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells us about giving, Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, and inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also your heart will be Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be required of the person entrusted with more. (Luke 12: 33-34, 48) Surely, I am no saint, but in my life I have clearly been blessed and have been given much. To that end I have a daily personal reminder on my desk that asks me what are you doing for others today. I confess that some days I am more successful than others. A wise person once told me that the values of our lives are measured by looking honestly at these things; who we spend our time with and what we spend our money on. It s a relatively simple exercise, but one that can be very insightful. As a pastor, it has become more and more obvious to me that people, Catholics in particular, are very sensitive about talks about money. Usually met with comments like Here he goes again It s a topic that we don t like to hear or talk about, yet, we have high and many expectation of our Church including lights, heat, air conditioning, and plenty of service. Despite our personal spirituality, operating a parish church costs money and parishes depend on parishioners to support and guide them generously and regularly. In my law practice, I have assisted and been inspired by many individuals who have prepared a planned giving option in their estates in support of our Church. These acts of generosity are invaluable in every generation. In our day, we are all involved with many causes and certainly many give to near and dear charities, but I am concerned that Churches are being forgotten in large numbers. The Philanthropy Roundtable analyzed data from a study done by Empty Tomb that showed religious donations in the late 1990s by Catholics, at 1.5% of gross income, running about half that of mainline Protestants, and about one-third to one-fourth of what evangelical and charismatic/ Pentecostal Christians were giving. Matthew Kelly, in his book, The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic, discussed research showing that only 1.9% of American Catholics were tithing, while about 5% of Americans as a whole tithed. In 2007, Christians of all denominations in the United States gave an average of just over $1,400 to their church and other charities, while Catholics as a subgroup of that population gave just under $1,000 about the same as non-christians. Religious giving is included in the broader concept of stewardship. Father Andrew Kemberling, Chair of the International Catholic Stewardship Council (ICSC), and Mila Glodava, coauthors of Making Stewardship a Way of Life, list the core values of stewardship on their parish website: IDENTITY: We are God s children God created man in his image The Catechism states: man is created by God and for God, and God never ceases to draw man to himself. TRUST: If we are God s children destine to return to God, we can trust that God will provide for all our needs. We need not worry about anything. Conversely, we also need to be trustworthy and honest in everything we do and entrusted to us. We need to be worthy of God s trust GRATITUDE: God is the source of everything we are and have. We will not exist without Him. We need, therefore, to be grateful Jesus is our model of gratitude. He gave thanks always. Father Andrew suggests making a thank-god list [to] think more of what we have and not what we do not have. LOVE: God loves us first. He created us in His image when we sinned, He sent us his only Son to redeem us, and the Holy Spirit to sanctify us so that we can return to Him and see Him face to face in heaven Now we need to return His love by loving Him back [which] requires that we give. We express our love by giving of our time, talent and treasure. Those in the know, involved in research or working in the trenches doing fundraising, suggest a number of reasons for Catholic philanthropic behavior patterns. Some studies have suggested that, from a practical perspective, because many Catholic parishes are larger some far larger than many other denominations communities, there is less practical need to give more. The needs of the parish get spread out over a larger number of families. They also cite the fact that our priests are paid less than non-catholic pastors and the fact that our facility costs are spread over multiple Masses compared to one worship service for the non-catholics. Although there may be some truth in this, it does not really answer why we collectively are not inspired to give more than we do. The CSPRI report on Catholic giving concludes that a lack of spiritual engagement with money is the biggest reason why our giving levels lag behind those of other groups. In other words, we tend to compartmentalize, keeping our money matters separate from faith matters, rather than looking at our money as something that is ALL a gift from God. Attaining this spiritual engagement connecting the dots requires proper formation, part of which comes through the messages delivered from the pulpit, though. The CSPRI team notes that a fairly common approach used in parishes to address giving, known as the pay the bills method, generally results in less spiritual engagement. That seems reasonable pay the bills promotes an attitude that is focused on doing the minimum necessary to get by with respect not only to treasure, but also to time and talents. In my experience, Catholics give less because in some parishes, the finances are kept a big secret. Instead of honesty, factual presentations, transparency, and full disclosure, some pastors are afraid, shy, or outright adverse to ever telling the people the truth about parish finances. In my humble opinion, that is a big mistake. At St Teresa s, certainly as long as I am here, you will be informed and informed and informed about where we stand on all aspects of our parish including our parish finances. The folks at Empty Tomb have estimated that we in the Catholic Church could generate tens of billions of dollars more funding if we bumped up our giving up a bit. This money could be used to carry out the corporal works of mercy for our less fortunate brothers and sisters, for evangelization and for more thorough formation of our members in short for carrying out the Great Commission. What better way to give witness to the Great Commission than a bit of sacrificial giving to support it? Think about the possibilities here in our parish we are not talking about huge amounts individually, but together, as the Body of Christ, enough to change the lives of billions of people if only we gave just a tad more and gave with regularity.

5 On an individual basis, we might want to consider some prayerful reflection and introspection, asking the Holy Spirit to open the ears of our hearts to the Truth and God s will for us, as we ponder questions such as the following: Do I yearn to have wealth, status or approbation more than I yearn to love God with all my heart, soul and being? Am I attached to my wealth, status, and the opinions of others, or can I be indifferent to them indifferent in the sense that if they bring me closer to God, they are good for the time being, but if they draw me away from Him, I need to get rid of them? Eusebius tells us that we naturally dwell on what we desire what do I dwell on my desire for God and conformity with His will, or something else? Have my possessions made me a slave due to my inordinate concern about them and their potential loss, which taints my judgment? How do I tangibly show my love for God? At my death, when God asks me to account for how I handled all the gifts He gave me, what kind of response will I be able to give Him? How do I use my gifts from God to help those less fortunate than I? Do I trust in God s providence for me that He knows what is best for me? What am I afraid of? Our Lord tells us not to be afraid, but to trust in Him, and to focus on Him and on the inexhaustible treasure of heaven so why am I anxious about the trappings of this short life on earth? Can I, as St Ignatius of Loyola prayed, ask God to teach me to give and not to count the cost? Can I find a way to increase my giving incrementally over a few years to get to a level that I know in my heart is what I should do? Am I doing my part to support my parish? I believe that it really is true God will NOT be outdone in generosity we just need to take the first step and see for ourselves. And finally, should you have ANY questions about our parish finances, PLEASE reach out to George Klasik our Finance Manager, Dolly or Joe our parish Trustees, or any member of our Finance Council. And it goes without saying that I am always ready to answer your questions about our finances, because we are in this together. Blessings! Fr Bob [Adapted from: why-are-catholics-cheapskates-regarding-giving/] WAYS TO GIVE Contributing by envelopes If you prefer to contribute by donation envelopes, please contact the parish offices and we will send you preprinted envelopes. Our goal is to create awareness of this program amongst parishioners and offer them the opportunity to become more informed and empowered in their gifting decisions for our parish. Why is the Legacy Fund critical to the long-term stability of St Teresa of Avila? We inherited the parish from those who have gone before us. Our legacy is to leave to future generations a parish that is financially stable, structurally sound, and alive in ministry. Through the hard work and generosity of our parishioners, the financial position of St Teresa of Avila can improve as there is a need to plan for the future. In supporting the Legacy Fund, ALL parishioners can give to both the present and the future of the our community. What happens to the money that is contributed to the Legacy Fund? The Legacy Fund is a restricted fund, meaning that 100% of the contributions received directly supports St Teresa of Avila and are not subject to an Archdiocesan or any other assessment or tax. Our parish wholeheartedly supports the good work of the Archdiocese through our monthly Archdiocesan Assessment as well as the Annual Appeal. How can I help? We ask that ALL parishioners to consider supporting the Fund. There are no minimum donations or bequests. Methods of support include: è gifts of cash or stock; èland or buildings; èmodification of wills and trusts to include the Legacy Fund in estate documents; èbeneficiary designation of life insurance or IRA accounts; èadvanced planning strategies, including charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts The Finance Council, in conjunction with the Pastor annually determines what restricted projects are the beneficiaries of the Legacy Fund.
