3 MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR est We are in the Easter season - 50 days of Easter joy. I'm not sure about you, but already I have heard the stories of those who are anything less than joyful. It concerns me because we have just celebrated the most important event in history - the Resurrection of Jesus, and yet it seems as if some still haven't received the message. The word joy appears over and over again in the Scriptures. The Psalms are filled with references to joy and in the New Testament, we read that joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gal 5:22), which means that it is a Christian virtue. Given this biblical emphasis, we need to understand what joy is and pursue it. Sometimes we struggle to grasp the biblical view of joy because of the way it is defined and described in Western culture today. In particular, we sometimes confuse joy with happiness. In the Beatitudes (Matt 5:3 11), according to the traditional translations, Jesus said: Blessed are the poor in spirit. Blessed are those who mourn. Blessed are the meek (vv 3 5, emphasis added), and so on. Sometimes, however, translators adopt the modern vernacular and tell us Jesus said happy rather than blessed. Happy, in our culture, has been sentimentalized and trivialized so as a result, it connotes a certain superficiality. However, the Greek word used in the Beatitudes is best translated as blessed, as it communicates not only the idea of happiness but also profound peace, comfort, stability, and great joy. So, we have to be careful when we come to the text of the New Testament that we do not read it through the lens of the popular understanding of happiness and thus lose the biblical concept of joy. Over and over again in the pages of the New Testament, the idea of joy is communicated as an imperative, as an obligation. Based on the biblical teaching, some would go so far as to say that it is the Christian s duty, one's moral obligation, to be joyful. That means that the failure of a Christian to be joyful can be considered a sin, that unhappiness and a lack of joy are, in a certain way, manifestations of the flesh. In his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul speaks about joy and about the Christian s duty to rejoice over and over again. For example, he writes, Rejoice in the Lord always (4:4a). This is one of those biblical imperatives, and it leaves no room for not rejoicing, for Paul says Christians are to rejoice always not sometimes, periodically, or occasionally. He then adds, Again I will say, Rejoice (v. 4b). Paul wrote this epistle from prison, and in it he addresses very somber matters, such as the possibility that he will be martyred, poured out as a sacrifice (2:17). Yet he tells the Philippian believers that they should rejoice despite his circumstances. How is it possible to remain joyful all the time? Paul gives us the key: Rejoice in the Lord always (emphasis added). The key to the Christian s joy is its source, which is the Lord. If Christ is in me and I am in Him, that relationship is not a sometimes experience. The Christian is always in the Lord and the Lord is always in the Christian, and that is always a reason for joy. Even if the Christian cannot rejoice in his circumstances, if he finds himself passing through pain, sorrow, or grief, he still can rejoice in Christ. We rejoice in the Lord, and since He never leaves us or forsakes us, we can rejoice always. I'm not sure that we always get this right, but I am surely certain that we can try! -Fr Bob 7 STRATEGIES For Dealing With Negative People 1. Set boundaries. Don t feel pressured to sit and listen to a negative person. Their negative energy will seep into your own life and affect your attitude. Set limits and put some distance between yourself and this individual. If you must be around a negative person, try to keep your interactions short. You can t control the negative behavior, but you can control whether or not you engage. 2. Avoid complainers. People who complain about everything will never enhance your life. They don t offer solutions, only point out problems. They will knock your ideas and suck you into their emotional pity party. If a friend, family member or colleague displays the classic symptoms of a complainer, stop socializing. Only deal with him or her if you absolutely must. 3. Weed out negative employees. Your company culture is a critical part of your brand. One toxic staff member can affect the entire culture of your business. Formerly positive employees may show signs of dissatisfaction, or worse, they may begin to adopt the behavior habits of their negative coworker. The quicker you deal with a negative co-worker, the quicker you will be able to resolve the situation. Have a meeting, convey your concerns and give the person a chance to change. If his toxic behavior continues, it might be time to let him go. 4. Choose your battles. Don t engage every time someone irritates you. Not only will you be seen as argumentative, you ll be welcoming the toxicity into your own life. Rather than argue, try to ignore any negative comments. Control your emotions and prevent the situation from escalating. Walk away from unnecessary conflict. You ll be respected for taking the high road. 5. Don t over analyze the situation. Negative people can sometimes behave irrationally. You will waste valuable time and energy if you try to make sense of their actions. Do whatever you can to prevent yourself from becoming emotionally invested in their issues. 6. Develop a support system.build a network of positive friends, acquaintances and professional contacts. If someone knows exactly how to get under your skin, you may not be able to manage the situation by yourself. Have the emotional intelligence to recognize when you need help. When you find yourself becoming overly emotional, call a friend or mentor and calmly explain the situation. Oftentimes an objective person can provide you with a different perspective or a new approach. 7. Embody positivity. Your happiness and wellbeing are too important to let anyone s negative opinion or rude comments bring you down or affect how you view yourself. Remain positive and begin to limit your time with the negative individuals in your life. With any luck, your positivity will be repugnant to toxic people and they will gradually fall away naturally.

4 ARE YOU A COLLEGE STUDENT OR A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR LOOKING TO GET MORE INVOLVED IN YOUR FAITH AND SERVICE? HOW TO FIX FAITH FORMATION In recent weeks, our parish bulletin has highlighted articles about why to fix faith formation to address the critical issues that face the Church in the 21st century -principally- decreasing affiliation among young people with organized religion, particularly Catholicism. As a parish community, we want to ensure that we are doing our part to combat this growing national trend, and that means that we need to take a hard look at what and why we are doing what we are doing when it comes to forming faith, especially when it concerns the next generation. At St Teresa of Avila Church, we will implement a model that implements the best practices in the field to provide a positive, meaningful impact for our families, teens, and children. In the next few weeks, we will explore how we will fix faith formation at this parish. MASS - NOT CLASS - AS THE CENTER FOR FAITH FORMATION In the American Church s past, Mass was the only thing offered that led to faith formation for most immigrant families - there was no CCD! Much of faith was formed through homilies, church art and imagery, and through a shared cultural tradition. Mass was the central point for faith formation as the source and summit of our faith. As times have changed, and as educators realize the different needs for different age levels to learn, our Children s and Youth Masses will more strategically be implemented to ensure that they are consistently engaging the youth of our parish and to bring about a meaningful message and experience for them as well. We will offer two Children s Masses over at Memorial Hall at 9:30 am and 11:00 am on Sundays, and we will also offer two Youth Masses at the Main Church at 12:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Our parish will be forming a team to ensure that these Masses are explicitly geared to reach our children and teens effectively. We encourage all of our families to attend Mass, as this will be where we will primarily form faith. SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION AS A COMMUNITY OF FAITH Nowadays, most cradle-catholics do not participate in a process called RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). However, for those adults who do enter the Church later in life, this process is successful because of its emphasis on creating a faith sharing community among those thinking about entering the life of the Church. Our sacramental preparation programs for children at First Communion and teens at Confirmation are more like their math and history classrooms rather than Christian communities. Faith is meant to be experienced and shared together, not just indoctrinated in a formal setting. Our parish will tweak our sacramental preparation programs to appropriately imitate the RCIA and foster authentic community among those seeking sacraments, and develop meaningful introspection in light of Church teaching. PARENTS AS THE PRIMARY CATECHISTS The Church claims that parents - not your local CCD teacher - are the primary teachers in the faith (ref. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1656). The role then of our parish is to work with our parents to provide them with the resources, tools, and methods to effectively teach and model their faith for their children. To accomplish this, considering the time of our parents and families, we will curate the best resources available and create a digital platform for them to access at home. Additionally, we will provide monthly parent meetings to invite our parents to get more involved, build community with other families, and truly partner with them to nurture the faith of our children. These are just a few of the practices that we seek to implement for our program next year. I invite you to join us undertake this large project to counter this overwhelming trend of disengagement in faith communities across the country. We will introduce more elements next week. Feel free to reach out; I would love to hear from you. - Nick Leeper, nickl@stteresaavila.org. WHAT Parishioners Are READING I have been reading The American Patriot's Bible, The Word of God and the Shaping of America - Dr Richard Lee, General Editor. Today the United States is under siege. This time, the enemy is within. The enemy is abandonment of the moral principles upon which this nation was founded.fixing what is wrong with America is not a political exercise, it is a spiritual one. An excellent starting point would be the return to a God-Centered Education. The American Patriot's Bible, The Word of God and the Shaping of America should become one of the foundations of today's educational curriculum. - Bob Peacock What are you reading? Would you take a moment and share with your fellow parishioners what spiritual books you are reading and writing a little infomercial about it? It s good for us to share these things as we walk and grow on the journey of faith together.

If you know of someone who is lonely, ill, grieving or going through a difficult situation, your presence, your kind words, listening or lending a shoulder to lean on are all wonderful ways to show that you care. Another way to show your love and concern is to give them a blessed, hand-made prayer shawl or lap blanket. A prayer shawl serves as a tangible reminder of the mercy, peace, and compassion found in the Lord's loving embrace, as a person wraps him or herself in its warmth and comfort. Through this gift, we learn to trust that God works through us when we care for friends and strangers alike. To request a prayer shawl or lap blanket, call Delma Puttress at Bereavement Group We have upcoming meetings on the following dates: April 24. The meetings are on Tuesdays from 7-9 in the Sacristy. No one should grieve alone. Being with others who are experiencing a similar pain and loss can be helpful. Participants in a Support Group are in mourning and their ways of dealing with the process can be helpful and encouraging. If you, or someone you know, is grieving now, no matter how long ago the loss occurred, you might find deeper peace through the Journey. Sometimes it is harder to talk with a family member because they are also in pain. If you cannot attend the entire series, drop in when you can. For more information, contact Ann Marasco: or Susan Angelo: Christ Child Society of Summit For the 10th year, the Christ Child Society of Summit and Bridges Outreach are collecting next year's school supplies for approximately 500 children in need in the Summit Public Schools.
