3 Lift Up Your Voice! MUSIC MINISTRY Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the ministry of music empowers worship and facilitates prayer in the liturgical celebration. As an integral part of our parish life, this ministry is active with many talented volunteers and professional musicians who are committed to creating a solemn prayer environment and joyous worship experience through music. Encompassing a variety of styles from the rich tradition of hymnody to the songs of contemporary composers, there is something offered for every worshiper. As fully active and conscious participants, the congregation is entrusted with an important responsibility to bring their voices and God-given gifts to the entire worshiping assembly. Whether you sing or play an instrument, we invite you to contact our Director of Liturgy and Music - Matthew Still, to learn how you can get involved and share your talents with the community. matthews@stteresaavila.org ST TERESA ADULT CHOIR Joining the adult choir promises to be an enriching experience of fun and fellowship with other singers who share a love of sacred choral music. The choir welcomes new voices throughout the choral season, from the Sunday after Labor Day weekend to the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend. During these months the choir sings each Sunday at the 10:30AM mass, during the Christmas season, and for the Triduum and Easter liturgies. Their repertoire includes: sacred traditional and contemporary liturgical pieces, and a variety of anthemstyle meditation pieces. Rehearsals are each Thursday at 7:30PM in the church sacristy. Previous singing experience is helpful, but not required. ST TERESA CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE *NEW* Our Music Ministry is looking to expand our offering of ensembles with a new group of singers and instrumentalists that will rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30PM and sing at the Sunday 12:00PM or 5:30PM masses each week (Depending on group availability). Participants who enjoying singing both as a group and as soloists are encouraged to considering joining this ensemble. Instrumentalists who play guitar, percussion, reeds, or strings, are all welcome and can make a contribution to this group at their own pace. The style of music will be a mix of classic and modern Catholic contemporary music, lead by piano accompaniment. Please contact our Music Director to learn more about how you can get involved and set up an informal audition. CANTORS Cantors are an essential part of the liturgy. Trained singers who serve as a cantor should have good pitch, basic music reading skills, and an ability to help lead the congregation in song. Each cantor is scheduled based on availability and often requires preparation aside from the regular choir rehearsals. Singers who feel they may be eligible to participate in this important part of the music ministry are encouraged to contact the Music Director to set up an audition of prepared music and required sight-reading. CHILDREN'S MUSIC MINISTRY Participation in this exciting, fun and educational program will enable children to grow in their faith, expand their musical horizons and share the gift of song with the parish. Children in grades 1 through 6 are invited to join. The children sing each Sunday at the 9:30AM mass in Memorial Hall. TEEN MUSIC MINISTRY *NEW* This new ministry is meant to act as a bridge between our children s choir and adult choir. The group is open to all students in grades 7 through 12 and sings at the 12:00PM mass once a month. Please contact the Assistant Director of Music, Mrs Kristen Hoyt at kristenh@stteresaavila.org to learn more about our youth music ministries. 4 PLEASE DON T READ ME DURING MASS. SEVEN EAGLES SOAR FROM TROOP 67 SUMMIT, NJ A historic Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on Sunday, April 22 at St Teresa of Avila Church for seven young men who achieved the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America, that of Eagle Scout. The Scouts honored were James Cho, Adam Dwyer, Quinn Halper, Daniel Vandersteen, Robert Vandersteen and Matthew Supran. This was a unique event in Troop 67 because in this specific patrol of Scouts, 100% of the Scouts made Eagle and seven were honored in this special ceremony. The ceremony included a visit by Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07). Congressman Lance personally delivered a Congressional Citation to honor each of these Eagle Scouts. Lance is a friend to Scouting and has attended ceremonies honoring at least 1,500 young men achieving the Eagle rank and several hundred young women achieving the Gold Award. Additionally, past District Governor of Rotary District 7510, Hal Daumé, also honored these new Eagle Scouts. Mr Daumé personally presented the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians Youth Service Award to each of these young men to recognize their outstanding achievement.. Scoutmaster John Detweiler presided over the ceremony and reaffirmed the expectations for these seven new Eagle Scouts as they move out into the world. And, Keith Halper, former Troop 67 Scoutmaster and father to Eagle Scout Quinn Halper, recited the Eagle Charge: THE HONOR, LOYALTY, COURAGE CHARGE YOU ARE CHARGED TO BE HONORABLE. Honor is sacred and is the foundation of all character. To show honor you must be trustworthy, the very first point of the Scout Law and for good reason. From this day forward, you will be held to a higher code of honor and ethics than most your peers. Honor is truly the measure of a man. Honor is represented by the white of the Eagle badge, YOU ARE CHARGED TO BE LOYAL, to family, self, Scouting, friends, community and nation. Be also loyal to the ideals of Scouting. The blue of your new rank is to inspire Loyalty. YOU ARE CHARGED TO BE COURAGEOUS. Courage gives all character force and strength. Have the courage to stand up for what is right and the ideals of scouting. Face each day unafraid and seek your share of the world s work to do. Let the red on your badge remind you always to have courage. The pathway to Eagle can be described as a steep trail leading up to three peaks, the highest being that of Eagle Scout. Officially, the trail starts with the Tenderfoot rank and continues through Second and First Class ranks. Then, the mountain climbing begins. The path is marked with merit badges, leadership responsibilities, service projects, and the practice of Scouting skills and ideals. The first peak reached is that of Star Scout, the second is Life Scout, and, finally, Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the most coveted and highest honor received only by 4% of Scouts nationally. Eagle Scouts are presented with a medal and a badge that visibly recognizes their accomplishment. For more information about Troop 67 contact troop67online.org New members are always welcome. We are so happy the sun has been shining and kids are playing outside! We celebrated Mary with a "May Crowning" prayer service. One of our kindergarteners crowned Mary and all the children made beautiful flowers to decorate our Mary altar. The children sang songs with Mrs Badilla, our music teacher, and learned how special Mary is to us. The Kindergarten and Year to Grow classes had a wonderful visit with CBS meteorologist John Marshall. He did a presentation on weather. The children learned so much about clouds, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Thank you to our PTO for funding this program to enhance our science curriculum! Our caterpillars have arrived and we are watching them grow. Each class has a butterfly garden, and once these caterpillars turn into a chrysalis, a butterfly will emerge! So exciting! We are having an Open House on Tuesday, May 8th from 9:30-2:00 pm. Please come to see our classrooms and meet the teachers. We still have availability in preschool and kindergarten. 7 PROVIDING MORE WITHIN est Youth Ministry For the last number of years, our parish youth ministry program has been out-sourced to BOLD, a company that provides youth ministry for middle and high school students. With the arrival of Fr Bob, our new pastor, and his new vision and direction, among the changes he has proposed is to offer youth ministry in-house and hire our own Youth Ministry Director. Our belief and hope are that providing this ministry under the guidance of our own full-time youth minister will enhance and make faith formation and youth ministry much more engaging and dedicated to the youth here at St Teresa of Avila Church. The former arrangement that we had at the parish is atypical in most parishes, and so, we want to ensure families and our youth that we will continue to have a dynamic youth ministry program. This transition will allow us to strengthen our youth ministry, and to consolidate our faith formation costs to be much more efficient. As we are looking to improve our parish s faith formation program, we would like to make sure the money we spend is being used to the best that it can be, and so we will be hiring our own Youth Ministry Director who will be a full-time member on the parish staff. This will increase our staff resources dedicated to our young people fourfold and for a reduced cost than out-sourcing the ministry. We hope that by having this new position we can increase our efforts to provide more for our young people and build other programs, such as creating a youth house for our students, offering a peer ministry program to allow our young people leadership opportunities, and to continue to do some of the great things that have been started here at our parish. Some of the components and strategies will be the same, but we are open to new ideas and input from parents and teens on how we can have the best possible program ever! If you have any questions, or concerns about this topic, please feel free to reach out to Fr Bob or any member of our staff. We are always interested in your input, support, and guidance.

8 exploring our new Youth Ministry We will explore the new youth ministry program a little further below. This explores the general faith formation program for middle and high school. We will release more details as registration opens up and offer two information sessions as well. Additionally there will be some summer orientation sessions scheduled for Faith Formation. PRETEENS (Grades 5-8) <right> For the Preteens, those in grades 5 thru 8, we invite them and their families to attend either the 12:00 pm or the 5:00 pm Mass. These Masses will be a little more geared towards these students, but certainly all are invited to attend these Masses who do not necessarily fit within this age range. We hope to focus on the belief that Mass is central to our new Faith Formation program. <right> Preteens, will also have a parent meeting offered once a month so that parents may get together to learn how to best use the content that will be delivered home. The content will be delivered not in the traditional classroom setting, but digitally. The digital content that will be delivered will be age appropriate of course, and will provide lessons, activities, and questions to think about on a family s own time. <right> Preteens will be invited to participate in monthly community gatherings with the younger children and their families, but we will be inviting them to take on more leadership roles to help our younger ones in their projects and activities. Having our Preteens participate in this way, will not only give them servant leadership experience, but will provide our younger Kids with good role models as they develop their own spiritual life. On this note, we expect all of our Preteens to serve at least 10 hours during the year either at the parish or in the local community so that they may practice what it means to give back. <right> Finally, once a month, we will sponsor Middle School Night. On a weeknight, in the third week of the month at 6:30 pm in Memorial Hall, our Preteens will come together to learn about a topic and to share their faith with one another in a small group setting alongside peer ministers. As there are multiple offerings for this type of session due the anticipated amount of Preteens, families will be able to choose which event they will wish to be a part of when registering. Faith sharing, in addition to the at-home faith learning, is more critical at this stage in a Preteen s development as it makes the faith more meaningful for them when they understand that it is valued by their peers, especially as socialization with friends becomes more and more important to them at this stage. TEENS: Lastly, our Teens program, is for grades 9 thru 12. This program will mirror the other Preteen program with a few tweaks and additions. <right> Primarily, our Teens will meet weekly for High School Youth Group, which will take place at 6:00 pm in Memorial Hall. Similar to the Middle School Night, this event allows Teens to come together for a large group session where they can socialize with peers, worship, and hear a relevant message before breaking into faith sharing small groups. <right> Our Teens will meet once a month for a High School Mass that will be offered on the third Sunday of the month in Memorial Hall at 5:00 pm just for them. For this year, we are trying this out and we hope that we can offer a High School Mass once a week in the future, as worship is the cornerstone in Faith Formation. We will provide age appropriate and digital content for Teens, and parents are invited to the same parent meeting that other group will have as well. <right> Teens, like Preteens, will be expected to serve and give back to the parish or the local community as well, but we expect them to do fifteen hours in the year as opposed to the ten that the younger group has to do. <right> Teens will have their own High School Gathering that will be separate from the community gathering that the Preteens will attend. The High School Gathering is also a putting into practice of faith where Teens will participate in a service project, field trip, or worship experience to deepen their understanding of faith. Hopefully this gives our families a little more detail about what will happen in the new youth ministry program for our middle school and high school students.
