3 Dear Parishioners - Blessings! As you know, I was appointed Pastor on our Feast Day - October 15, 2017, which means that I have reached my 90 day milestone! In this time, I have become keenly aware of some of our strengths and weaknesses, some of your joys and disappointments, as well as the fond memories of St Teresa's of the past and your hopes for our future. And while I cannot undo any of the past, nor recreate it in the present in the same way, please know that I am happy here and so committed to work with you to build up our community of faith in this current day and in our given situation. To be successful, however, I will need your help - not just the help of a chosen few, but the help of everyone! After these first 90 days, I have been able to see, reflect and consult with so many of you, our staff and some colleagues. As a result, I share with you below my initial 10 point plan for our parish. 1. BE PRESENT - I hope that you have seen me present at our masses, activities and planned listening and other sessions. I pledge that you will continue to see me at as much as I can possibly be present at, while being attentive to not burning out! I would welcome having dinner with small groups of you either at your homes or at the Rectory. Please contact Michele at the office if you are interested in arranging one of these. 2. PROVIDE SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP - At one listening session, a woman challenged me to be the priest that helps the people of the parish to deepen faith while encountering the living Jesus. This is truly my job - and as soon as I can get the mundane things, like physical plant issues, temporal challenges, and the daily distractions that we all have out of the way - I will be able to better focus on that important responsibility. As a step in the right direction, you should know that for Lent, we have already arranged a preaching series on the 7 DEADLY SINS. Stay tuned! 3. INCREASE OUTREACH - It is obvious to me, with 22,000 residents of Summit, half of whom are believed to be Catholic, there is much for us to do with regard to welcoming (back) people who have fallen away from our faith. While this is usually most successful when people are ambassadors of this initiative themselves, we are also already using social media to be seen beyond the walls of our Church. Share the good news of your experiences here with your friends and family and invite those who have fallen (or ran) away back! 4. EVALUATE FAMILY FAITH FORMATION - We have 1,200 children in our program! At every level, it is increasingly obvious to me that we can improve. We will begin to de-construct our program into specific levels - First Communion, Confirmation, Pre-K and K, 3-5, 6-7, Teens and Adult Faith Formation, hoping to zoom in and focus on the particular needs of each of these unique groups. We are not able to continue CCD as it has been presented in the past. All the experts tell us that this is a model that does not work. I will be inviting parents of each of these grade levels to work with me and our team to better structure our program, taking into consideration our resources and limitations of staff, timing and funds. 5. PERFORM A PLANT ASSESSMENT - I have called together people who are interested in serving on a BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS committee. The first meeting will be scheduled soon. This group will be invaluable for me and our parish as we assess what we have, and more importantly how we best care for them so as to preserve them well into the future. 6. IMPROVE THE BUDGET - As you know, STA ended last fiscal year more than $700,000 in the red and our school ended more than $70,000 in the red too! You cannot operate anything in the red. At this writing, we are also operating more than $100,000 behind budget this year. To that end, we have been carefully reviewing all of our expenses, contracts, services, and staffing to be sure that we are right-sized in all areas. The other side of that equation is to ask all our Parishioners to give a meaningful donation every weekend. More on how to so this better will follow in the days ahead. 7. COMMUNICATE MORE- As in every family, communication is key. We have already upgraded our bulletin, web site, social media outlets, all with an eye to being both transparent and informative. So many in our midst are expert in this area - please share your talent with us and more importantly be sure to be informed about the goings on here in our parish. Follow us on FACEBOOK and TWITTER and read the bulletin and web site regularly. 8. CONSULT BROADLY - We have an active Finance Council, and I have already added two new members, and we have two great parish Trustees. We also have an excellent Parent Teacher Organization for our school. It is my hope going forward that we will have advisory councils for our CEMETERY, FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM, INVESTMENTS, and other groups on an as-needed basis. These are vital to our future - a parish where you are at the center of our direction. 9. HIRE PROPER STAFF - You can imagine that anytime a new person takes the leadership responsibility for any organization, there will be changes, including with the staff. You should know that changes for our staff are always based on the principle as to what will "make our parish better". And it's never personal. I have already re-built our priest team, and have re-aligned our current staff responsibilities in addition to changing our music leaders. I know well that change is hard for some - but for us to be successful, I need to be able to build a team that I have confidence in, and that will measure up to the standards that you deserve. Should any of these changes have impacted you negatively, I ask your understanding and patience. I have every confidence that you will be more satisfied as time goes on. 10. HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE - Finally, I ask that we all embrace this tenet. We are a Church - people on a journey attempting to emulate the life and mission of Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic tradition. That means that we are called to respect and love one another. I can tell you that there have been times in my first 90 days that it seems as if some have lost sight of that - so I respectfully ask that we all have the right attitude especially when something doesn't go our way or as we would have expected. From those who have participated in the EVERYONE LEADS session (see the bulletin cover for the next session with the author) you know well that our Church is living in challenging times. Our parish shares those challenges as do many of our people. It's when these challenges seem to be overwhelming that I am reminded of the words of Jesus himself who told us, "I will be with you, even until the end of time." With that promise, there is really nothing to worry about. I look forward to working and praying with and for you. I ask you to please pray for and work with me as well. The children heard the story of the Epiphany and who visited Baby Jesus, and been making snowman and snowflakes. For more information, contact Kristen Gawlik stteresa@boldym.com Visit us online at st-teresa.org Saint Teresa of Avila Parish Loaves and Fishes Thanks to the assistance of over 100 volunteers, the Saint Teresa s Loaves and Fishes committee was able to distribute food to 420 needy families for Thanksgiving and 390 for Christmas! Parishioners of all ages joined with our partner organizations to pack bags with a variety of food and distribute them, along with turkeys, to those in need. These food drives would not have been possible without the generous contributions from our parishioners, as well as the following organizations: AK Stamping, Boy Scouts, Troop 67 of Summit, Community Food Bank of NJ, Franklin School, Jefferson 3rd Grade Brownie Troop, Kings Super Markets, Lincoln School, Lawton C Johnson Summit Middle School, St John s Lutheran Church, and St Teresa s Religious Education Much of the food was distributed to needy families right here in Summit. The rest was given to Churches and organizations in our area that support the needy. Thanks to everyone involved who have allowed us to continue this long running tradition, and have made this community outreach a tremendous success! Bereavement Group Our upcoming meetings are scheduled for January 16, January 23, and January 30. The meetings are on Tuesdays from 7-9 in the Sacristy. No one should grieve alone. Being with others who are experiencing a similar pain and loss can be helpful. Participants in a Support Group are in mourning and their ways of dealing with the process can be helpful and encouraging. If you, or someone you know, is grieving now, no matter how long ago the loss occurred, you might find deeper peace through the Journey. Sometimes it is harder to talk with a family member because they are also in pain. If you cannot attend the entire series, drop in when you can. From 7am to 9:30pm, there will be numerous opportunities to participate in activities which demonstrate the interconnectivity of justice, equality and service to others. Rev Dr Martin Luther King, Jr leaves behind a legacy of action and astute navigation of process to ensure that his messages for peace, justice and equality are still heard, understood and acted upon by individuals and groups. Moreover, he navigated the political process through letter-writing, petition-writing, speeches, marches, convocations and more. He devoted a great deal of time to efforts which he long hoped would achieve peace, justice and equality for all. For some, connection may start with an act of kindness or charity on behalf of someone experiencing a hardship, injustice or an unfair situation. That act of being helpful to someone may prompt an ongoing connection to the person and build more familiarity. One may come to then understand more fully any underlying injustice or inequality in need of action to change systems, structures, policies, interpersonal harm, and any complacency which oppresses the equal opportunity, dignity and rights of others. Make January 15, 2018 a day to listen, learn, open your heart to love, volunteer and act to achieve a better world for all. STAR Program The ROOTS project and Interfaith leaders in Summit, invite 9th to 12th graders to participate in the Strong Teems Against Racism (STAR) 2018 overnight retreat. The retreat will focus on understanding race and racism and will be held Feb 2 to Feb 4 at Johnsburg Camp and Retreat Center. Register as soon as possible.
