3 Right-to-Life Lessons for Young Children Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of parenting is finding ways to pass along our values to our children. How can we best convey our pro-life beliefs? To help, we have arranged several ideas below, based on the age range of the child you are teaching. AGE 0 TO 18 MONTHS Pro-life parents can help their children understand the value of human life from a very young age. Teaching a child that they have inestimable value is a good beginning. No child is too young to understand that they are loved. Hugs, kisses, words that affirm and encourage are all wonderful ways of saying to a child, "You have value! You are a special child who is dearly loved." 18 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS By 18 months to three years parents can illustrate the value of human beings by pointing out how many kinds of people there are and explaining that each one is special: red and yellow, black and white, short and tall, big and small, some who walk and some who use wheelchairs. Find opportunities to convey the baseline pro-life value that each person is a special creation. PRESCHOOL TO 3RD GRADE If you aren't reading to your preschooler every night before bed, you are missing a wonderful teaching opportunity - on several levels. The Dr Seuss classic Horton Hears a Who tells the story of Horton, the kindhearted elephant who rescues the citizens of Whoville. Horton's philosophy ("a person's a person no matter how small") is a gentle lead-in to the humanity and dignity of the unborn. The delightful book by Jennifer Davis, Before You Were Born is short and easyto-understand for children of preschool age to about third grade. It includes a simple approach to the unborn baby's development with interactive pages that children can peek under and look at. Both these books are available at most libraries and bookstores. By Jennifer Davis By Dr Seuss Another fun way to help youngsters appreciate the unborn is to take them to see the newborns at the hospital. Point out the wonderful variety in each of the babies and remind children that they were once that tiny too - but no less special. Discussions about babies (and "where they come from") should take place early and often. A child's natural curiosity about the anatomical differences between girls and boys will lead them to ask questions. Answer them honestly using language they can grasp but don't offer more information than they are requesting. Little by little, you can fill in the blanks as they inquire. 4TH GRADE THROUGH ADOLESCENCE When you feel it is appropriate, have your children participate with you in your chapter's pro-life activities. Help them to understand that the people of our country disagree about the right to life of the unborn. You can say, "Mom and dad believe that every baby is a special person and has the right to be born." Teaching pro-life lessons during your child's adolescence is particularly important because our values go handin-hand with the concepts of chastity and abstinence. An important step is setting a family standard for what is and is not acceptable TV and movie viewing. Be aware though, kids are walking "hypocrisy detectors." The only way for parents to avoid undermining their own teaching on this subject is to abide by the same standards themselves. ADAPTED FROM: WANNA KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT OUR PARISH? Each week we will feature a question you asked about the goings on at Saint Teresa! WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH MEMORIAL HALL? In short... NOTHING! Many of you may know that the City of Summit has been exploring possibilities of a 10 acre redevelopment by a company called Topology. Our Memorial Hall property is included in the 10 acre study. This is a NON CONDEMNATION process which means that the City of Summit has no interest in or, ability to take action against, or even to relocate Memorial Hall. The Survey of this process which many of you have participated in should be on the City s website this week. May 31 Presentation:

4 SUMMER PROJECTS AROUND THE PARISH While the summer is surely a time to rest, relax and breathe, the parish is in full swing with repairs, improvements and some necessary maintenance. And while no one likes to spend money for infrastructure, caring for our physical plant is essential. Recently it has come to our attention that there are three projects on the horizon that need our attention sooner rather than later - CHURCH ROOF CHURCH AIR CONDITIONING RECTORY AIR CONDITIONING The Church roof is in need of repairs to a section of the slate, pointing and waterproofing. We have engaged the services of Slate Roof Professionals and the work will be started as soon as possible so as to prevent further damage. The cost for the slate repair is $5, and the cost of the pointing and waterproofing is $16, The Church Air Conditioning was in need of repair last year, but the work was deferred. We have gotten to the point that it now needs repair if we are to have air conditioning in these summer months. The work to be done is to replace the 25 ton condensing unit. The cost for the project is approximately $27, We already have one bid and are in the process of collecting two more. Finally, the Rectory air conditioning is also in need of complete replacement as we will be transitioning this space, which now has 12 empty rooms into a parish center and meeting area, having the matter addressed sooner rather than later is essential. The cost for the project is approximately $38, We have one bid and are collecting two more. As we have collected over the years some monies for capital maintenance and improvements we will not be taking any special collections for these essential repairs but certainly welcome any addition assistance for these projects. As you can imagine, maintaining a large plant is a challenge, so we are grateful to the Buildings and Grounds committee who advises the pastor on these matters. Should you have recommendations for plumbers, electricians, landscapers, roofers, etc, please do forward them to us. Every project we engage in must have three competitive bids and the approval of the Archdiocese. You can be sure that we are working hard to use all of the good resources you entrust to us wisely, while protecting and maintaining our parish plant. We will keep you updated as the work is completed. Thank you! Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua Priest and Doctor of the Church Please Join Us for the Annual Saint Anthony Italian Mass WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13 AT 7:00 PM IN THE CHURCH Reception to Follow in Memorial Hall (Blessed Saint Anthony Bread will be distributed) O Holy St Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. O gentle and loving St Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen MORE WAYS TO GIVE LEGACY FUND Aiming to secure the sustainability of parish ministries and outreach programs, the Legacy Fund provides funding for parish specific endeavors such as outreach programs, maintaining our buildings and enhancing ministries. The Legacy Fund is a restricted fund, meaning that 100% of the contributions received directly support St Teresa of Avila and are not subject to an Archdiocesan or any other assessment or tax. We ask ALL parishioners to consider supporting the Fund. There are no minimum donations or bequests. Methods of support include: (1) gifts of cash or stock; (2) land or buildings; (3) modification of wills and trusts to include the Legacy Fund in estate documents; (4) beneficiary designation of life insurance or IRA accounts; (5) advanced planning strategies, including charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts. The Finance Council, in conjunction with the Pastor annually determines what restricted projects are the beneficiaries of the Legacy Fund. Please contact Finance Manager George Klacik for more information. MATCHING GIFTS Many employers offer employees the opportunity to make contributions to charitable organizations such as St Teresa's through: 1. Payroll withholding deposited into the employer controlled trust account(s) 2. Credit card donations deposited into the employer's controlled trust account(s) 3. Personal checks paid to the employer's controlled trust account(s) 4. Matching gifts 5. Paid work days to serve as a volunteer SECURITIES By giving appreciated securities that you have owned for more than a year, your charitable deduction is the fair market value of the securities on the day of the gift. Such gifts provide income tax savings and eliminate your capital gains tax liability. WILLS & ESTATES The parish can be remembered in your Will while still providing for your loved ones. Suggested wording for such bequests is: I give the sum of $ (or % of my estate) to the Church of, for its general purposes (or something more specific of your choosing). LIFE INSURANCE Consider naming St Teresa Church as the beneficiary or owner of a new life insurance policy or the beneficiary of an existing policy. For a young adult, the premium for purchasing a new policy is minimal, yet the lasting benefits to the parish are significant. RETIREMENT PLANS Consider naming the Church as the beneficiary or contingent beneficiary on your Beneficiary Designation of your retirement plan, IRA or 401(k). It s easy, requires no attorney or fee, and is tax advantageous. FINANCIAL INFORMATION The parish publishes the amount of the previous month s collection in The Handbook as well as on the website as the cumulated amount tallied against budgeted expenses. If you would like to discuss the financial situation of the parish in more details, please contact the Finance Council through the Parish Secretary.

Prayer Shawl Ministry A Prayer Shawl is a Gift of Love. If you know of someone who is lonely, ill, grieving or going through a difficult situation, your presence, your kind words, listening or lending a shoulder to lean on are all wonderful ways to show that you care. Another way to show your love and concern is to give them a blessed, hand-made prayer shawl or lap blanket. A prayer shawl serves as a tangible reminder of the mercy, peace, and compassion found in the Lord's loving embrace, as a person wraps him or herself in its warmth and comfort. Through this gift, we learn to trust that God works through us when we care for friends and strangers alike. To request a prayer shawl or lap blanket, call Delma Puttress at Congratulations, Al Pach! Parishioner Al Pach has just completed his Master of Divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. The MDiv degree is the foundational degree for the practice of ministry and understanding and interpreting faith in the contemporary world. At Union he studied theology, church history, pastoral care, and preaching & worship, with a concentration in psychology and religion. Al has worked in pastoral care, faith formation and chaplaincy. He has been a spiritual director for 6 years, having earned his certification through the Milltown Jesuit Institute in Dublin, Ireland and is currently working with RENEW International on small group faith formation. At St Teresa s, Al chaired the Homebound Ministry for several years, was instrumental in providing retreats to the parish and has been a Family Promise volunteer. Al hopes to continue his work in spiritual formation and pastoral care in the parish and other organizations, supporting others in finding their own spiritual pathway toward a deepened relationship with God.
