2 This term s teaching is driven by a Video Series produced by Karl Faase of Olive Tree Media and is focused on exploring the profound impact of Jesus of Nazareth on culture and everyday life in the Western world. If Jesus had not lived, we would literally not know ourselves. We will explore ten major spheres of life in which Jesus has changed the game for all of us. There is a 25 minute video that matches each theme and we will use some of these in our worship gatherings. There is also a ten session study guide for use in groups (available as a smartphone app or a soft copy book). We are encouraging all NewHope groups and many of our ministries to set aside 6 to 10 meetings to watch the videos and discuss them together. We will also host a six week BIG GROUP in the Community Events Room Tuesdays 20th February to 27th March pm with food, videos on the big screen, break out groups and some special content for those who are not presently in a group or would like to come along and see the videos again. It is also being run at our Surrey Hills Baptist Children s Centre (277 Elgar Rd) Wednesdays 21st February to 28th March pm. This would be a wonderful series to invite a friend to join you at worship or in your group, especially someone who is asking the important questions of life. This series will inspire as it opens our eyes to the amazing dynamic influence of Jesus Christ upon our history, culture and the everyday values we take for granted. 4 Build Update The staff have moved into the new upstairs office space, and the new upstairs meeting rooms are being well used by many groups. The downstairs area has now been fully stripped out as work continues on completing the ground level, This will include meeting rooms, additional cafe space and an enlarged foyer allowing movement through the whole building. The cafe floor will be retiled during the school holidays. Keep an eye on newhope.net.au/build for the latest photos. 5 Building Closure NewHope News April 2018 During the Easter school holidays the main building will be closed to allow for renovations to the cafe floor. Please note the following affected ministries: Middle Ground Cafe: The cafe will be closed from Monday 2nd April and re-open on Tuesday 17th. The cafe will also be closed on Sunday 1st (Easter Sunday), 8th and 15th April. Playspace will be closed Tuesday 3rd and 10th April and Friday 6th and 13th April. Reception: NewHope Reception will not be accessible during the floor renovations but phones will be manned during normal office hours. Any queries please phone Sunday Services: Our usual 9am & 11am and 5:30pm services will run as normal. Access will be via the cafe entrance or the Dale Court entrance. Persian Worship Service: Direct access to the Community Events Room via Springfield Road steps past the cafe entrance. Chinese Worship Service: This service will run as normal. Access will be via the cafe entrance or the Dale Court entrance. Dinner Tonite: Direct access to the Community Events Room via Springfield Road steps past the cafe entrance. 6 Invite to Prayer Meetings NewHope has many and varied ways to connect regularly and pray as a body of believers. You are invited to join in one of the many regular groups and times. Here are a couple: Prayer on Wednesdays: 7-8pm in Function Room 1 Prayer before the Sunday 9am service, meeting from 8:40am - 8:55am in the café. Just come join. 7 ESL community care inc. Good news! ESL at NewHope is planning to re-open in July! From July 22nd we are anticipating that English classes will again be offered on Sunday mornings from 9:00am - 10:30am and 11:00am - 12:30pm. We are also planning to open new classes on Thursday afternoons from 12:30pm - 2:30pm. We need new team members to join us at one of these times to help people from overseas learn or improve their English. You can help as a teacher or an assistant. For teachers some teaching experience is desirable and we need some bi-lingual assistants (Chinese - English) to work with lower level classes. If you d like to help and want more information or are interested but not sure of how you could be involved in this happy and successful ministry, talk to Marilyn Burke, ESL@NewHope co-ordinator. Latest from Phil and Carol Short in Niger Phil and Carol are in the deserts of Niger working with others amongst the Fulani. The Boko Haram terrorists are often not far away. Recently they were able to pass on funds raised for a secure well in a new location. The king of the area welcomed them, and they were able to share openly of God s love and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. Some solar powered Megavoices with Scriptures and other material were given to those who showed interest. They have left someone there to supervise the well digging, and will visit these people again. In January one of their co-workers was in a town surrounded by Boko Haram terrorists who killed the soldiers stationed there, and he was very fortunate to survive. Last week he was back to strengthen and encourage the believers. What a privilege to be a part of this! Our partners depend on our prayer and the support of our NewHope Global fund to keep going. 10 Campus Update: NewHope Croydon Croydon Football Club Croydon FC has made a commitment to the full SALT (Sport and Life Training) program, becoming a member club in 2018/19 and have completed the 2 out of the 3 modules of training for The players have nominated leaders within the playing group for accountability in various areas of the Core Values - the idea being that the players begin to own the club in these areas and report and share within the playing group. Some are convinced change needs to happen in the area of their social behaviour, and others are not.
