3 Our Lady of the Rosary Church Sunday, October 14, A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIESTS Father Joseph, Father Louis and Father Albino Each person in the world has attachments in their life. People are attached to new technology, new clothes, new cars, etc. People tend to focus on how to become wealthy in this life. There is no wrong in acquiring things, but one must remember that these are only earthly possessions that will not last eternally. These items will perish and be gone. As Catholics, we should be prudent when dealing with earthly wealth. This Sunday, Jesus is telling us that if we focus too much on our attachments to worldly things, we might be prevented from entering into the kingdom of God. Like the rich man in this Sunday s gospel, he went away sad from Jesus presence after he received advisement to detach his heart from his possessions and share it with the poor. Based on our gospel, to inherit eternal life it doesn t matter how wealthy a person is in this world but how generous people are to God through their neighbor. God created man good, in his image and likeness (Gen. 1:26-27). Our first parents willfully chose to rebel against God, thereby sinning and introducing death and other negative consequences, including suffering, into man s earthly existence (see CCC 396ff). The exercise of free will by some can indeed entail the persecution of the innocent, whether ancient Israel under the oppressive reign of Egypt for more than 400 years, Christians and others in the Holy Land by imperialist Muslims (which precipitated the Crusades), and the killing of millions of Jews and others during Hitler s reign. And yet God does not abandon us amidst such persecution. He sent his eternal Son to redeem and save us (see John 3:16-17). In addition, through his sacrifice of Calvary, Jesus shows how suffering can be redemptive. Similarly, though he does not actively will our sufferings, he can permit them so as to bring about a greater good (see Rom. 8:28), including the opportunity to serve the persecuted (see 1 Cor. 12:12-26, Matt. 25:31-46) and, ultimately, help foster our own ultimate eternal salvation. Further, as noted above, the persecution of the innocent can result in their unjust killing, as it did for the Holy Innocents when Herod sought to seek and destroy the Christ Child (Matt. 2:16-18). And yet death did not have the last word in the case of the Holy Innocents, nor will it for others unjustly persecuted unto death. God is in charge and will ultimately and gloriously vindicate those unjustly persecuted. Remember that the Devil doesn t sleep, but seeks our ruin in a thousand ways. This collection on the next-to-last Sunday in October is a unique, global effort for the entire Church to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God s love and mercy, His hope and peace. The individual stories of abuse that robbed the souls and violated the bodies of so many innocent children and young people during the past seventy years are shattering. For me as a bishop there is an additional level of shame, because in many instances, this abuse was magnified by the leadership of the Church that placed fear of scandal and the culture of clericalism ahead of the protection of young people. Kroc Institute 5998 Alcala Park San Diego, The Pennsylvania grand jury report demands action and also points the way toward reform in the life of our Church. That report reveals that the imposition of the zero tolerance policy in 2002 substantially worked. It ushered in a period in which sexual abuse of minors by priests fell dramatically through consistent reporting to civil authorities, the creation of lay boards to evaluate the truth of allegations, and the education of children about abuse. The additional reforms that we must undertake at this moment must be based on the principles that produced positive change after 2002 an unswerving focus on protecting minors and vulnerable adults and a binding voice for the laity in determining whether an allegation is true. Any genuine reform must forcefully integrate these principles in a framework of accountability that applies to bishops in their personal lives and administrative actions. I have already begun a process of consultation with priestly and lay leadership in the diocese of San Diego focusing on the steps we need to take locally and nationally to accomplish genuine reform. During October and early November, I will hold eight listening sessions throughout the diocese. These meetings will focus on seeking input from people in the pews on the pathway to such reform, listening to those who have been victimized by clerical sexual abuse either directly or in their families, and praying for God s grace to be our only guide.
